Unexpected Changes

 

 

Aliana had just arrived back in her room from her shift in the Science lab. She grabbed a drink of water and sat down to check her messages. One popped up, from her mother.

“Put on screen. Begin message.”

“Hello darling. I have good news! You are going to get a new little sister! Now I know, you are probably saying, ‘What?’

“Wh—I am not saying what…. Damn.”

“Well to explain, I am adopting a little Vulcan child. She is about 7 months old, dark hair and eyes, and so cute. You will just adore her! We want you to be here on Betazed when she arrives home. She is coming 50808.10, so if you get here, say two days before, you will have plenty of time to take a vacation and also meet her! I cannot wait to see you! Please tell me what day you will arrive, so I can make arrangements. I love you! Bye.”

“Oh. My. Goddess. A kid?”

Aliana sat there looking shocked and then began to realize her mothers exact words. “OH MY GOD!”

“What were they thinking? A kid? A kid?!? Oh my god. I-I-I-I’m going to have a little sister? Oh my god.”

She got up and begun to pace around the box filled room. She ran her hands through her hair several times before stopping and calming down enough to think rationally.

“Well, I am going to have to request shore leave... Oh my god. Ok, ok, ok. Well this is a change. Ok, better get started on preparations.”

She opened a new message file to Captain Quark and Commander Brown and started with, “Greetings. I have recently been informed that my parents are adopting a child and my parents have.... er, "requested" my presence at our family home, for when the child arrives. I am requesting a leave of absence for 6 days starting 50808.08 (August 8th, 2008, I will be at the sim the friday after the 8th of august). Thank you.

 

Aliana Lucindak. Computer, send message.”

She leaned back as it was sent and grinned. Suddenly it dawned on her, she had yet to ask Captain Quark about another leave of absence for her Cousin’s wedding.

“Damn. Computer begin another message. Subject: short leave of absence. To Captain Muon Quark and Commander Brian Brown, Sky Harbor Aegis. From Midshipman Aliana Lucindak. Begin message.

“Greetings again. I am sending this to request another short leave of absence for about 6 days, starting 50808.22. If any info about what it is for is needed, then let me save you the trouble. It is for my cousins wedding. I am sorry for the shorter notice.

 

Aliana Lucindak. Computer, send message.”

She grinned as it was sent and thought about all of the events that were coming; a new sister, her cousins wedding, and her birthday. She sighed and went over to the door. She needed to take a walk, and figure out what to get her cousin.
