WARNING!

This is a public Warning, a player known as Chakotay8(Didn't get the rest of the name) has broken into my system twice via the Academy chat room. Right now I need a link on how to restore my broken java chat program, and I think that the security proticals around the chat room need to be upgraded. Since I have a firewall and he hit me!

Is this the same Chakotay that visits Lightning's Lounge occasionally?

What do you mean that he broke into your system via the Chat Room?  What has he done to your computer and how did he get into your hard drive via the chat room?

Before the system crash. I was watching the holodeck without a problem. Then the same error happend, A+C+D to shut it down. I rebooted, and now I can't see the room. Now while this happened to me, it happened to everyone else in the chat room, (roughly 9:45 PM this evening) Chakotay was the only person in the room who wasn't affected. I also know a while back when I told this person no five time for joining thier sim group, the same thing happended.

i remember a chakatoy that wreaked havoc on several academy sims especially one of dacs i remember, (look at the past posts i'm sure it's there) a very angry little dude with a grudge against stsf, yet he keeps showing up, usually with a different number to bypass our ignores...that, or there are many angry guys with chakatoy as their names

Hey Andrew,

What you just described isn't a hack of your system. This is someone using a technique to overload the chat room which causes it to crash. This has happened numerous times before and isn't a new problem. GMs have been aware of Chakotay for some time. As to how he does it, I could tell you but at this stage I'd rather not to avoid folks trying to copy him.

This issue has nothing to do with the room's security nor anything to do with your hard drive. Paramount and PeopleLink have been aware of this problem for quite some time. To my knowledge, an update is in the works.

As to not being able to see the room, clear your system's Internet browser cache. Now, try to re-enter the room. 9 out of 10 times, the room will work fine for you. Sometimes it doesn't even take that and a reboot will do the trick. How do I know? Several months ago he pulled this stunt during a Reaent sim. :)

Makes me wonder what kind of grudge Chakotay would hold and still be doing this activity. He obviously is very low on the maturity scale.

Hey there,

If I remember a brief conversation, he is upset at the fact that he must be "demeaned" by going through the Academy.

Hi there...

This is something many of us has seen at one time or another over the past several years.  Many of our GMs and players have had to deal with people coming into the room to disrupt it.  Even when they manage to find some kind of exploit in the room where they can attempt to crash a browser or force a blue screen of death or something with different room codes.

But in the end, they disappear.  The important thing is not to give them any attention.  If you see them in the room, ignore them.  Don't talk to them, and don't acknowledge what they're trying to do.  When they see they're not getting the results they want, they'll disappear.

Remember...  these are children who are doing this.  They're doing it because they're not the center of attention and they want to be.  By responding to them, you put them center stage and you only tell them what you did was the correct way for them to continue to recieve that attention.

By ignoring them, they realize they'll have to either play by our rules or they won't play at all.

Okay, I see. I'd probably feel demeaned myself, but if those are the rules, those are the rules and I'd deal.

He can't deal, apparently.

Forgive me if I'm a technical dummy. But if they're just typing codes to the screen that appear on ours and make all these bad things happen...wouldn't the "ignore" button solve the problem entirely?

Hey there,

Some individuals have reported that it does while others have reported that it doesn't. I know from my experience, should I use administrative tools to mute the person in question, they're "chat room crashing hack" doesn't work.

Not for long, I hope.

A reasonably experienced simmer can graduate the academy pretty quickly.  Requiring everyone to go through the academy process, I think, is more than just a matter of "those are the rules" - it satisfies the interests of fairness and equality.  To some extent, it prevents favortism to people who know the GMs, and it keeps STSF from trusting other simming forums' rank systems, where their standards may be lower (I think the Chakotay idiot is a perfect example of why we need academies).

The only exceptions to the rank/academy system that I could see being reasonable (correct me if there are more) are:

- When a ship joins STSF from another forum, people who move along with a ship should be able to keep their rank, without going through the academy process again

- GMs who have lower rank (Lt Cmdr or Cmdr) in academies become "honorary" Cmdrs, Captains during their academies.

- A GMs who has a lower rank (Lt Cmdr/Cmdr) in one sim who starts a new sim should be able to be a Captain.

I agree with this 100%..for me it was just a matter of adapting a different format STSF uses.

IF and I do say IF another vessel/crew join STSF I would hope in my opinion the simmers would go through the academy in a matter of fairness.  Many businesses in the real world operate this way sucessfully with new management hires, in order to better understand the indviduals they will be mangaging along with procedures.

I think the academy is a fair way to filter out good & bad simmers. If a person can't meet certain requirements then why should they procede into the forum, bring the advanced sim down. Since I've seen forums where players just fill out an application and start, in thoery its a good idea. However, after a few players who use CAPS lock all the time, or don't know the difference between say a phaser and a tricorder, as a GM you're pulling out your hairs.

I think there should be the opition at by-passing the academy, but the CO of the sim the player is joining has to give the O.k. Since then they've accepted the player, and can bring him/her up to speed on how the game is played.

Yes I know I just place arguments for both sides of the academy, what can I say I'm in one of those moods.

I wonder if this is doable - maybe have a way of "testing out" or challenging the Academy the way you can sometimes do with college courses.

Personally, I don't think that's such a smart idea.  It just adds on more unnecessary procedure and might create two classes of players.  That, and it might reduce the number of players coming to academies, and that's a loss for everyone.  Anyway, who hasn't learned *something* by going to the academy?
