Star Trek MMO...Cryptic Countdown

I know I've talked to a couple of people about the Star Trek MMO project, which recently was held back when developer Perpetual Entertainment announced that they were officially ending their involvement with the game. There's been a lot of rumors about the game's future since, and perhaps this is just another one of them.

Anyway, it was believed that Cryptic Studios had picked up the Star Trek license and the artwork from the original MMO Perpetual's team designed. Sometime in the past few days, a coutdown appeared on Cryptic's website, counting down the days (of which, less than 45 remain) until...well, you don't get any more information than that. If you look at the artwork on this countdown clock, it appears to be artwork Perpetual had released while the game was still on track. You can see the clock...here: http://www.crypticstudios.com/

So...anyone want to propose any theories/conspiracies while we wait for the clock to hit 00:00:00:00?

It's probably a beta test. You'd think that they would give STSF unlimited access to the game. After all, we are the official roleplayers of Star Trek.

The Trek MMO game forever implodes and scatters into atoms within the black hole of unreleased or sidelined games?

I believe the term is "Vapor wear."

The Trek MMO is almost on par with "Duke Nukem Forever"

It's going to come. Someday.

I bet it is a publicity stunt. They are going to cancel it later, stating something about not enough funds and that they might be able to try it again if they get enough money. They are Soo going to ditch the project.

Well, it'll have to be done before December 21st 2012.

On an optimistic note, at least Cryptic has published a successful MMO. While I have a feeling that the Star Trek MMO won't live up to its expectations, I think Cryptic would at least get it to release. It might crash and burn post-launch, but I have to believe Cryptic would at least get it to that point.

Unsubstantiated Rumor #1: At level 60, you can purchase an epic borg-cube mount.

Wow. Just for that I would do the game. I would be yelling "Fear me, FEAR ME!! Muahaha!!" :) until some better dude/dudette comes up and kicks my butt.

I had a Borg Cube in the online dynaverse of Starfleet Command 3. It pwned all. That's always been my biggest question about Trek. The Borg made the UFP look like cavemen with pointy sticks at Wolf 359. The Federation didn't fare much better at Sector 001 either. (Picard had to tell the fleet where to shoot)

So why don't the Borg just send like...I dunno, a handful of cubes and assimilate us all?

Maybe they'll release it with the new movie. If there's an audience for the game they'll release it, I guess. There are a lot of Star Trek fans but I'm not sure if its enough for the game.

Because they are the bad guys, and the bad guys never win.

A tell of how well the ST franchise might be handled may be in how well Champions online is reviewed and recieved when it comes out. I'm just glad I don't have to read any more of that drivel that was pouring out of Perpetual for months on end.

My guess is that the offical announcment will go out when the 'clock' hits 0. Generally Cryptic works with NCSoft for MMOs. If that is the case then generally people who have subscribed to other NCSoft/Cryptic games will get invites to a closed beta before they accept applications from people who have not played their subscription games. (Observational comment: Even with applications they tend to pick from people who have paid subscriptions - or have paid for their other games previously - over new applicants. They do accept people other than those in the mix, but generally I've only run into serious beta testers and subscribers during early beta testing.)

But then again I'm only stating this from observation of how things usually go when it comes to Cryptic MMOs that I have played and/or beta tested.

(CoH/CoV, Tabula Rasa, Lineage, Auto Assault.)

Opinion only: Champions looks alot like City of Heroes incarnate, maybe with a different system. But now since this made me look at CoH/CoV, I think I will go kick some Rikti behind during the Invasion event again. ^.^

Yeah, I'm interested to see how Champions will turn out. I can only think of a few times when I think an MMO developer has been able to say 'Man, if we could only do it again' and put those ideas into production (Everquest 2 - though it wasn't designed to be a replica of the original, Vanguard - it hurts to much to talk about). I liked a lot of things about CoH and CoV, but I just didn't get into it. I had a hard time finding roleplayers, which didn't help. Lots of opportunity here to expand off of their original license, into a subset of the MMO genre that has absolutely no competition.

Unsubstantiated Rumor #2: In an effort to reduce production costs, the man providing the voiceovers for the 'Head-On' commercials will step in for Majel Barrett as the voice for the standard, LCARS based computer.

You know, I'll come right out and say that I really have not been following the progress (lack thereof) with regard to the Trek MMO lately (in the *very* beginning, I did). I'm not looking forward to the game, and probably won't update/purchase a new PC and grab a subscription in order to play the MMO if and when it's finally released.

I love Trek (duh), but I'm not Jonesing for this game. Within the last few years, I've gone back to console gaming, and to be honest I think it's easier to console game. No monthly subrscription, unless you choose to pay yearly for on line play, otherwise you can play solo. The games you buy, open, pop in and play with no patches required, with an occasional update or add on.

I would like for a Trek MMO to take the gaming world by storm, for the record. It'd be nice.

Heheh, she said "Jonesing" I do have to agree with Kansas. I'm not going to run out and spend thousands of dollars for a new laptop (which would probably have Vista :) ) and lots of money on an annual subscription for a game I'll barely play.
