ROFL!  I guess I'm a nerd many times over, after reading these, lol.

1.  I, uh, have a turtle named Picard. ::looks away::  Well you see, I got the turtle around the time TNG started, and it looked just like Picard...  Anyway, he's still alive and happy hunting worms in my garden.

2.  Uh.  I had a snake named Riker for a couple months before my mother paid my drunk party guests to free Riker by catching it from the tank and chucking it in the yard.  I wasn't very hurt by the episode - it had eaten my lizards (un-named).

3.  My first college degree was a bonafide nerd degree, and one didn't escape without becoming a Trek Nerd.  (It also helped me pass a few classes, because inevitably either my study partner or I would convince the other to keep working til midnight so we could watch TOS on my new big color TV and tapped-into apartment cable.  We both graduated AND were hooked on TOS and gormet coffee.  Oh, and action figures.)

4.  My dad was the original TOS demographic - the old computer engineers, so I watched TOS with him when I was a kid.  My mom hated it then and still does now.  Hmm, I should buy my dad a movie DVD set next holiday...

I tried to recover from being a Nerd for many years.  I changed professions.  I packed my action figures in a box.  But it was just denial.  When I stumbled onto online simming many years ago, it was all over.  I am a Nerd.  I play Star Trek computer simulation games.  I've dressed up as Spock.  I've been to conventions.  I have autographs.

You forgot to add that some people got hooked on TOS... when it was actually ON TV, prime time, not late night.

Now I say:

Yep...I'm one of those who got hooked in September 1966...the night the very first Trek episode aired on NBC.

::sighs:: Them were the good ole' days.  :)

I'm here, because I too, am a nerd and have been from the start.  When I was a little girl, one of the television shows I remember my mother letting me stay up to watch was Star Trek, and we'd sit and watch while she brushed my hair. Dad would just sit in his chair reading his newspaper and grumble at us, about pointed eared freaks and such, but we caught him watching around the edge of the paper many times, but kept it to ourselves.  It was truely a bummer when the show ended as it was something we looked forward to each week.

The Mercury project was history by the time Star Trek came on, but they kept talking about this Apollo stuff and going to the moon, making Star Trek all the more interesting, and hey, maybe some of this stuff is possible. Star Trek ended, but then man finally landed on the moon, which was so absolutely cool to us that had the opportunity to watch on the television. I remember being glued to the tv, nobody knowing if they would make it or not, and then they did.  After this, we made dad take us on trips to Wallop's Island, Langley, and once to the Kennedy Space Center. Kids nowadays, prior to the most recent Shuttle accident, rarely even knew if there was a current shuttle in orbit or not. When we were kids, you knew anytime something went up, and it was always televised. Anyway, I"m getting off track.

So, then about 1974, Star Trek brough out an animated series, and being the older sister, and watching my younger siblings, TAS was what we watched. I made sure of that. It was just too bad there were not more.  Luckily, soon after came the first movie, a bit of a disappointment when compared to Star Wars when compared side to side, but hey, as far as I was concerned, any Trek was better than no Trek.

I had some of the little Trek and Star Wars dolls, that I'm still regretting that were given to my younger siblings when I went to college (especially seeing the price of them on EBay now)! After college, some of the people I used to play AD&D and Milanda with, started a Trek table top game. Basically, we did a sim every Sunday from noon until 8pm, stopping only to barbeque around 5pm.  We usually had a group of 8 -10 people, and had a blast, with no connection problems, crashed computers ect.  This is where I played my first Caitian player, and have always has one since.

Having gotten addicted to playing D&D every Friday night, and Trek every Sunday it was a bit of a bummer, when several of the people ended up moving due to new jobs, or new babies on the way.  The D&D group continued, but the Trek game became more and more scarce, playing maybe once every 3 months. Then I ended up having my own children, and the game broke up for some time, only getting together on certain holiday weekends.

So, now sitting around the house, with a new baby, my husband shows me this computer thing he had bought for himself. I really wanted no part of it, figuring it would be complicated, and I decided na, I'll just read a book, you go play on it. Well, then he got one of those AOL disks in the mail, installed it and went surfing. He called me over, and showed me this chatroom called StarFleet Academy.  Well,

you see where i am now, and within a month, I had graduated, joined 2 sims, and was well on the way to taking over his computer. We finally had to go out and get a second one, and another phoneline.  Then came those first large AOL bills, remembering that it was "pay by the hour" back then.  That, was what taught me moderation when it came to online simming. But not to trek in general. That was....at least until the free account, and then the unlimited time. Then I was on too many sims that I started to confuse myself as to who I was each hour. Time to cut back and go for quallity over quantity.

Currently, I have nearly ever Trek book writen, blueprints to many types of ships, the original FASA roleplaying games from 1966, 1981 and the newest as well. I have boxes of figures all secured away, and my living room is filled with bottles of Romulan Ale and Romulan figures.  Even Huff called me a nerd when she heard my laptop turn on one night at her place.

My pictures for my work id, as well as my Driver's license are both taken in my Trek Uniform, and when I get my new passport done, I intend to wear it for that as well. I was disapointed that the people at Motor Vehicle didn't even flinch when they saw it. The folks where I used to live in Delaware tried to crop as much of it out as they could, but my new license clearly shows the uniform. If you're in Vegas, ask me to show it to you!!

I bought Trek halloween costumes for my child and we wore them together for the first several halloweens she did, until she wanted something else one year. I've done the conventions for years, have the autographs and have some great pictures with the members of the casts, as well as with many of the online simmers I've gotten to know over the years.

Anyway, I just saw that the new figs were going on pre-sale for TOS on ArtAsylum.com, so I'm going to have to stop rambling now, and go buy more figs.

Most frightening to me was when I flipped on the TV one night a year or so ago and they had a Star Trek documentary on...  So I watched and there were many clips from various conventions... And I noticed that one of the conventions they kept showing looked an *awful* lot like one that we went to...  So I looked closer, and sure enough for a full three seconds of screen time, I saw a clip of our one and only Blurox ambling down a vendor corridor...  Yep, she's a nerd.

WOW, that's almost as good as the time I was on C-SPAN live!!

Seriously, I was.  There was an American Economics Association conference in San Francisco in 1996.  They had really good rates for student attendees and one of our faculty let me stay in his hotel room.  This is the convention where I got to shake hands with the real John Nash, the guy Russel Crowe played in A Beautiful Mind.

Anyway, there was a discussion panel on some economics topic at the convention that was televised by C-SPAN.  I happened to be sitting next to someone who asked the panel a question and the cameras captured both of us.  Fortunately one of my friends at the college was videotaping it and recognized me because we didn't even know it was being televised.

Now, assuming I haven't already taken first place as an overall geek with this post, can anyone top that?

Personally, I blame my parents.  Let's just say the first Trek memory I can recall is of watching "Who Watches the Watchers," first airing, because there was no way I was going to get control of the TV...

Though I may not be up to Huff or Blurox's standards, I too have a room in my house that is covered with Trek paraphernalia, from well over 100 figures on the walls to ships hanging from the ceilings, to a string of light-up Christmas lights that are miniature TV's with still shots from TOS on them.  I have an entire shelf dedicated to the Trek paraphernalia I've received from my online buddies.  I have light and sound-working models of tricorders, phasors, communicators from all species and eras.  Several of my items are autographed from the Trek Stars, and I have a signed copy of a radio script in which I performed in front of hundreds of fans with William Campbell and Mark Leonard.  (To prove you are real nerds you should know who these guys are without looking it up!)

I have a few books and magazine scattered about my room and a bumper sticker that says "Ferengi School of Business".  That's about it.

Cool thread. I think I'm a nerd for the following reasons:

- My mom and I used Star Trek to bond. It's one of the few things we can talk about.

- I play D&D, Star Trek LARP, Buffy LARP, Magic the Gathering, Diablo II, etc... (nuff said I think.)

- I actually ENJOY those games above too. :)

- I own too much dice.

- My boyfriend and I play "Guess the Trek Episode" game.. by stating a premise and trying to remember the name of the episode.

- I worship Buffy.

- I collect strange things.

- I am a karaoke queen.

- The first song I do at karaoke is always "The Time Warp".

- I seem to be one of 3 people there who actually know the song. :)

- I do websites and make/play with/mutilate graphics for fun.

- Most people at work have no clue what I am talking about half the time.

- Video games, video games, video games.

- I wore my hair like Princess Leia in junior high. Sometimes. Well, most of the time.

- I recall calling a teacher a 'bad name' in Klingon. I was then asked if I was on drugs.

- Though I've never taken drugs ever. :)

- I date a former simmer. I plan on marrying said former simmer. I like that he 'gets me'. :)

- My big insult is "Well, double dumbass on you!" :)

- I'm a girl gamer.. that in itself makes me geeky .. or a goddess to male gamers everywhere. Either one. ::grin::

That's all I can think of.. I'm sure there is more.

Wow, every day?! That's thoroughly awesome!

As for 'strange things' .. I'll give you an example. I used to collect those tabs off soda cans. I can only assume I was one day going to make something out of it..(chainmail? Curtain.. who knows..) .. but I lost most of them in a horrible parental accident.

(My mom found the bag and threw it out! The horror!)

I also collect barf bags from planes, postcards, coasters, bottles (glass mostly) and those bath meshy-squeegie things you bath yourself with. (Really..I have like 50. I can't stop buying them.. and I work in a retail store..so it's like a gambler working at a casino.. stop the madness!)

And I understand.. but hey, a little lesser goddess side worshipping didn't hurt anyone. :)

LOL.. I guess there could be a slight resemblance. But I don't eat sandwiches with captain crunch and pixi sticks on it.
