Which ship do you recommend?

57 posts in this topic

I am trying to decide which ship (Challenger, Agincourt, Arcadia, Sky Harbor Aegis, Reaent, ect.) to ask to be assigned to, and I was wondering if any of you recommend one more then others?

~A-L

EDIT:

Oh also can you be reassigned?

That depends on a couple things. Do you have a character in mind? Are you looking for a specific department to work in? How silly or serious do you like your simming? Are you willing to jump into a heavily populated sim?

Best advise it to go and visit each sim for a couple nights.

And yes, usually you can transfer.

I second the visit suggestion; no better way to figure out if that particular game is the ship for you as the player.

I agree.

Every sim is the same in that the same rules and conventions are used throughout the community, but that's where the similarities usually end. Sims are largely defined by the individuals that make them up as well as the style of leadership the GM hosting team brings. And there's other things to take into account.

1. Schedule: Obviously you need to select a sim that's most conducive to your schedule. While it's ok to miss an occasional sim here and there, advanced simmers are generally expected to show up each week and participate.

2. Time Period: What universe would you most prefer? While the Majority of the sims are concurrent with TNG/DS9/VOY, some sims are prior (Challenger, Hood), while another sim is post Voyger (Agincourt)

3. Small Versus Large: STSF has its share of larger sims (17-22 players), medium sims (12-17 players) and small sims (less than 12 players). There are advantages to each. In a large sim, there might be a lot of people to interact with, and a lot going on, but there is also likely going to be more down time for your character and less opportuntities for advancement (department heads, especially). On small sims, you sometimes find the most hardcore players with deep characters who have been there a long time. Since they're smaller, you also have opportunities to connect with simmers faster and the opportunities for advancement and to be involved are greater. Some people, however, like the week-to-week excitement the larger sims bring.

4. Character and Position: As Kith said, the character and position you're looking at is important. Some sims, for instance, don't allow certain species of characters. Also, determine what kind of position you're looking for. Bridge positions are sometimes hard to come by, some positions (Marines, Fighter Pilots) only exist on certain vessels.

With all this being said, take some time to watch some of the sims you're interested in. Talk to the GMs in charge and share you're character thoughts and aspirations with them. Most of the sims have a website you can go to as well to learn more.

Remember, there's no rush to joining a sim and after a short waiting period you can add a second sim if you choose.

Well im just on the challenger, and personaly I enjoy it. Its a smaller sim, the the advantages and disadvantages above apply.

The timeline is between ST VI (i think, the last TOS movie) and TNG. With this being a unexplored period cannon wise, it still leaves a large amount of things open to explore for ourselfs. However, alot of other sims are in eras or forms that leave alot open to themselfs. As mentioned above, stop by each of them, talk to the crew, and watch the sim for abit. I'm almost possitive all the GMs will allow you to watch. If your there a few minutes before or after, you might also be able to talk to a few of the crew members.

I Also agree with the Visit and check out Advice.

another aspect is plots. I can't quite speak for other sims, I am with Arcadia, I have noticed that our plots are often quite complex, and usually ridiculous to a degree...a good one in my opinion though. for example...

Arcadia is testing a new propulsion system, it goes horribly wrong and throws us lightyears away and far into the past. going with the idea of "a long time ago in a galaxy far far away, the plot ends up with us meeting the galactic empire. this is a bit far fetched and silly, it's also very fun. Our current plot is going on 15 weeks of play in the same plot, there can be very quick plots, and ones that might take a year to unfold...a year of realtime, not necessarily sim time.

Like I said, I can't account for how plots go on other ships, but the type of stories that are told are also a good qualifier for the ship you are on. I enjoy the twisty, outrageous stories that are told on Arcadia. Arcadia's website has a backlog of plot summaries, I don't know if other ones do. But you might do some reading into the types of stories that sims tend to tell and incorporate that into your decision.

there's my two hundredths of a credit...

Oh, Prophets...a year in that camp? Please tell me that's not the plan... :P

But yeah...I'd recommend that you just go watch the sims, see which one has the best style for you. That's what I did, and I've ended up quite happy on Arcadia (minus the whole getting arrested for capital crimes thing  ). ::does the cheesy "Thanks, STSF!" thumbs-up thing:: I'm sure you'll find youreslf the place you want to be.

I picked Excalibur because it was the only ship that didn't conflict with my need to get up at 6 AM, school, and my daughter.

If you have unlimited options, and a NON hard conflicting schedule, then you are limitless, but even though I picked Excalibur because of the scheduling, I am so happy on it. Everyone there is great, and I can imagine my character on another ship...

(Is that too Cheap a suck up Kansas??? LOL)

First, I feel participating in ANY STSF SIM can be a rewarding experience. I suggest you follow the advise of the many wise and experience SIM players who've responded so far. Keep it simple, have some fun, take your time! Stop by Challenger on Sunday night and have a Root Beer with me!

Every game is a little different. Excalibur is set about 8-years after the end of the Dominion War, and is set primarily in the Gamma Quadrant. Currently we're on a search for the Founders who've gone missing.

Excalibur's plots tend to be fairly complex with various layers, and an overreaching general plot that ties all our small ones together. We also have fighters, marines, in addition to several players who add depth to our game but are no necessarily in traditional rostered positions.

More information can be found on our boards and on our website.

Another thing to note is the tone of the sims in STSF. While all operate under the Star Trek™ umbrella, they each have their own distinct vibe. Some very serious, some very light, the rest somewhere in between. You probably have your own idea of where you fit in with that, and some players aren't compatible with one extreme or the other, you'll just have to search deep within yourself and come to that epiphany. Again I'll thumbs up the idea of watching sims before you apply, no better way to cover all the points discussed in this thread than to actually drop in and check things out.

Though, just because a sim is usually quite serious doesn't mean that it never has fun or wacky, either. For example, the Talon usually has very serious plots and very serious characters, but t'Rexan did jump out of a cake wearing only strategically placed whipped cream once. Okay, she nearly shredded the ship apart to find out who tampered with the holodeck, but you see what I mean. B) The same can be true the other way as well.

Good luck with your decision Aliana!

If you like petting zoos, then Excalibur is a great place for you. B)

I'm now involved in 5 sims, and I can tell you that each one has unique qualities that make them great. Just go with whatever you feel is good for you.

I think 'Psych Ward' is more accurate.

I will say this.

I've been simming on Reaent for just over 5 years, and in January, I decided to join Challenger as a second sim when it made the transition, but I've found it extremely hard to get used to simming on Thursday AND Sunday. Seiben has been very forgiving the many times that I have a Brain Fart and forget to show up, but It's nice to be simming with a second group of people.

[shameless plug] But I love the Reaent (and Challenger). And I could use an ASCI! [/shameless plug]

Um no.. that would be the Qob. Come check out the crazy Klingons and their equally crazy displaced Federation crewmemembers. Tuesdays at Midnight. We are out on a mission to meet new species and kill them. Come, Join the hunt and I'll even throw in a plate of Warrior Cookies.

An Excalibur "Psych Out" would definitely come into play if anyone ever went up to Kitty #1 and proceeded to say, "There shim is, shim is such a good panther! Yes shim is! Would shim like a catnip mouse? Shim would?"

Don't do this. Bad. Loaded claws and dice. ;-)

Wow Kansas. That was THE definition of an inside joke. Not only did those not on excal not understand the tone of the joke...they misunderstood the words.

Hey, you should come get high with us on Arcadia as we discuss the moral ambiguities of drug trafficking.

[Alert! Alert! Inside Joke]

I would never engage in unlawful drug trafficking ...

... How much will you pay me? And I prefer dealing in Imperial Fleet medical grade mixtures, antibiotics, and hypo medications. They tend to last longer once removed from the confines of a medical storage locker, and their power grade remains stable enough to get a nice chunk of credits on the black market.

[Looks at the alter Ego]

Right. ::mutters:: moral compass is a bit skewed there... ::louder voice:: Anyway!

Both Excalibur and the Agincourt rock out and are great sims/ships to play on. Agincourt boasts two Marine Sharks (and don't you ever mess with the Cat's Sharks) in charge of a Fleeter ship, and the adventures are downright fun. Right now, we are dealing with a serious storyline: picking up the pieces due to an alien attack fleet which basically slagged most of the Earth. And Excalibur, as Capt. Corizon mentioned, has a bunch of main plot arcs, side plots, overlapping stories, and interdepartmental interactions going on.

But, I have to stress my original post - attend the advanced sims, check the ships/games out, and see what is a good fit for you as a player. We can't make that decision for you. The sims are all different, and each style is not a carbon copy of each other, and there is a time factor to consider as well. Are you sure you can make that sim every week? Don't join a sim "just because", or if you "think" you will like it eventually, and then a month later you start highschool again, or a new job, or get involved with another group, and drop out of sight. That's just a waste of the GM teams time and Personnel. Not to say that a transfer is not doable, because I myself have transferred btw Aegis and Excal with a character.

Just think through your first sim decision!

STSF is a wicked cool site, and each sim has something for everyone.
