Shore Leave 2008 - East

46 posts in this topic

Ok, I've taken the plunge, bitten the bullet . . . whatever.

For years a group of us have met at the Science Fiction Convention in Hunt Valley, Maryland. It's been a favorite of mine mostly because it's only a 7-hour drive for me. Also, it is a fan-run convention, the celebrities they have there are people who like to mingle and don't mind having their pictures taken or giving out autographs. Another draw for me has always been the number of Trek and Science Fiction authors who also attend and give workshops.

As always, this is an informal get-together and is not sponsored by STSF.net or any of its affiliates (do we have affiliates?).

Information can be found here: http://shore-leave.com/

I've made reservations at the Embassy Suites across the street. There are many hotels in the area. Anyone else interested, post your questions and comments here.

Oh, yes..and my favorite geek, Rodney (David Hewlett) will be there - Wo0t!

Nice! Thanks for the heads up Commander. I've never ventured to the Shore Leaves (at least not yet), but the con is close enough to do so. I'm really liking those writer workshops they are showcasing, and quite a few cool actors are making appearances. Big cons can be awesome, but there's something to be said for the validity of the smaller ones as well. The few cons I attended in Valley Forge were small, and rocked.

Awesome, Jami! I just love the Baltimore convention, it's the only place to have our official Shore Leave. Las Vegas just costs too much money. Thank you for bringing back Baltimore! I will have to have a chat with my husband and see if he wants to return this year. We went last year and had a blast! Hope to see you all there! =0]

Latest update from Shore Leave 30 Flyer:

For reservations at the Marriott Hunt Valley Inn, mention Shore Leave Group Code SHRA for a special room rate of $123 plus taxes. I don't usually stay there because it gets a bit rowdy and fire alarms tend to go off at 3AM ::eyeroll::.

Guests this year include:

George Takei

David and Kate Hewlett

Malcolm McDowell

Adam Baldwin

Mark Sheppard

W. Morgan Sheppard

I'm really liking those writer workshops they are showcasing,

Ann Crispin's workshop is very practical; I've attended hers several times. She is very much pro-new writers and lets you know up-front what the ins and outs of publishing are. Ann usually gives chapter critiques (for a fee) for those who attend -- that I have found very enlightening.

Howard Weinstein is - well - Howard. Like a kid in a playground. Great to be around, a real hoot to listen to, very encouraging.

I hope Peter David shows again - he's hilarious!

It's been years and years since I've been to that con. Too bad I've already taken my vacation for the year. It was fun the one time just walking into the little bar area and there's Neelix (Ethan Phillips) and Garibaldi (Jerry Doyle) talking and having drinks with everyone else.

The Hampton Inn near there was a good place to stay, atleast it was 10 to 12 years ago.

When's "Shoreleave Middle" coming?

Where's "middle"? I'm in Dallas but I don't know of any regular conventions around here. If we slide a little from Sci-fi to fantasy there's a HUGE RenFest near here going on for the next month. I have seen someone out there in a Star Trek uniform before. Poor guy, even the guy with the trash can lid armor was looking at him funny.

Just an FYI, When I went to Shoreleave, I had an Entertainment book. In it are listed hotels for 1/2 price. I found a hotel for $63 a night and that included, a kitchenette, a queen size bed and a living room area with a sofa bed, and Even though it was in July and hot, there was a fire place too. It helps to buy that $15 to $20 book. It saved me over $300 a visit.

I wish I could say I can go to this one but circumstances beyond my control will not allow me to do so. Maybe I'll get lucky who know but for now its a no go.

Thought this info would help the penny pincher's.

middle would be midwest...unfortunately, I think we have as many trekkies per square mile here as we do diphthongs...

We do need to have a Shoreleave Midwest. At least the three major divisons would be covered.

I attended last year (in a year where there wasn't an STSF "presence"), and it's a great con. Not very big by my measures.

Getting a nearby hotel is handy -- if you don't rent or drive your own car, the transit system going up to Hunt Valley is slow and then the walk from the metro stop to the hotel isn't bad, but you're going without sidewalks.

If I know what I'm doing and can afford the gas, I might make an appearance. ;)

Oh no, I might have to actually meet you??

Hey there, it looks like I will be coming to Hunt Valley this year as well, as this falls in a period of the summer when most of my family is out of town, so I think I'll drive up and watch the Imperial March Macarena yet again!

All righty...it looks like we may have enough people to maybe do the name tag thing again. So....

If you are coming to SL Baltimore and would like an STSF name tag, send me a PM via the message boards with the name you desire on it (real or character) and I'll hand them out that weekend.

Questions? Send me a message board PM and I'll do my best to answer.

It is the entire room doing the Macarena during the Saturday night dance, but to the Star Wars tune. Many people are in costume (but not all), so you may have to witness the Imperial Macarena being danced by Storm Troopers, Browncoats, Buffy fanatics, Trek nerds and even some weird one-offs like Robin Hood ::notes the collective shudder by the folks who witnessed Robin Hood from about 7 years ago::
