"The Boy and the Blob"

The Boy and the Blob

By: Lt. Andy Carter

Andy's blob slinked his way down the corridor after breaking out of the Science Lab earlier.  There's only so much a creature can put up with, and then it does not take any more bull.  Ensign Henderson knew that he hated those "special dietary supplements".  Maybe it would do good to make him eat it instead of him.

After rounding the corner, the blob made his way into an access hatch that had been left open by a repair team.

"Ahhh..." it sighed as it began inching forward again.  The rest of the ship around him always seemed so huge.  It made him feel small with the ceiling being so far up.  But here in the jefferies tubes, he was right at home.

The blob began moving through the rest of the ship, exploring the various areas he could get to from the jefferies tubes.  He was almost caught by one of the engineers on the lower decks, but he is a lot faster than they are in the smaller space.  Thoughts of being smarter than they were too also crossed his mind.

It was not until he crawled out of the jefferies tube into one of the cargo bays that he spotted someone else again.  There was a child on the other side of the room with a soccer ball at his side, sitting on the floor Indian style with a book in his hand.  From what the blob could tell, the child was studying the contents of the book.

The blob started to turn around when something else caught him out of the corner of his eye.  On the other side of the child, behind the rest of his books was what appeared to be a bag of potato chips.  Slowly it began inching forward towards the child.  What it would not give for the highly fattening, fried potatoes.

It had finally gotten within grabbing distance of the bag of chips when the boy looked up and spotted him.

"Hello there," the child said as he laid the book down on his lap.

The blob stopped and watched the boy a moment, somewhat suprised at his reaction to him.  Most "people" that he encountered tended to freak out when it got close to him.  The only one that really didn't was Andy.  It inched a little closer to the boy, looking up at him with his big glassy eyes.

"Don't worry... I'm not going to hurt you." the boy began.  "I'm Tommy."

The blob slid back slightly, not quite sure what to expect from the child.  It stopped however when Tommy reached for the bag of chips and pulled one out.

"Want one?" the boy asked.  He set the chip down in front of him halfway from where he sat and where the blob was.

Carefully the blob slid forward, sucking the chip up, savoring the taste of it.  Unbeknownst to Tommy, also causing him to grow slightly.  It continued eating the chips laid out by Tommy as it came closer and closer to the boy.  Finally it slid onto the boy's lap and just ate from the bag.

The only thing that disappointed the blob was the fact the bag was almost empty.

"Oh well..." it thought.  "He might get me another later."

It sat there with Tommy for a bit.  No matter what though, it still had to figure out what it was going to do.  He still was determined to find Andy.
