"Initiations"

A Joint Log between Praxxis and Socom

----------------

...continued from sim

Praxxis noticed that the discussion between him and Socom was beginning to draw

the attention of other individuals in the medical bay and decided it might be

prudent to relocate.

"Doctor will you join me in the medlab please?" he asked somewhat sternly and

motioned towards the adjacent lab behind them.

"Fine." He answered, then turning to see half the medical staff looking at them.

”Get back to work!” he shouted before moving off.

Praxxis followed him into the medical lab and waited for the doors to close.

"May I speak freely?" he asked doing his best to maintain his calm despite the

maelstrom of emotions churning around inside him just this moment.

Socom simply nodded. “Go ahead.”

"You were way out of line in there. You do not have the right to treat a

patient, much less my patient against their will. It is a violation of

practically every medical oath you've ever taken, it is immoral, it is

unethical, it is wrong! And don't you think for one moment that just because

you've got one more pip on your collar than I do means that I'm going to stand

by while you go about such business." Praxxis’s tone was level but also

somewhat forceful, he wanted to make it very clear that he wasn’t going to stand

for this but also not come across as being disrespectful or insubordinate, a

very thin line to walk indeed.

"No, I figured you would respond.” Socom answered back immediately, clearly

un-phased by the challenge. “Personally, If it's helping someone prevent

possible injury or death, then I could care less about the oath.”

For a moment, Praxxis was certain he hadn’t heard that right and he realized

suddenly that his eyes had grown wide with shock. He took a moment to compose

himself before continuing, now clearly shaken that a man such as this could have

made it into Starfleet medical practice. "With all due respect doctor, if that

is your mindset, then you are not fit to practice medicine on board this ship or

anywhere else for that matter. The oaths are the basis of medical practice.

What you just did in there is nothing short of assault. You forcibly injected

that man with medication that he neither wanted nor needed." Praxxis was fuming

but trying very hard to keep himself under control despite it. "Your duty

doctor is to diagnose a patient, inform him of your diagnosis, inform him of the

possible ramifications of that diagnosis and then recommend treatment. However

if the patient then refuses that treatment, then that's it, end of discussion.

You can try to persuade him otherwise, but unless he is incapacitated, or

mentally incompetent and incapable of making the decision himself, you cannot

treat him against his will. Period."

"I know my duty.” Socom replied dismissively. “I have been doing this for quite

awhile now. I know he refused treatment, however I wasn't going to let his

ignorance get in the way of his health and well being.”

"That is not your decision to make!!!!" Praxxis practically exploded at the

man, he felt as though he were talking to a wall for all the good it seemed to

be doing.

“Well I made it, didn't I?” Socom responded seeming not to care much one way or

the other about the arguments Praxxis was making. “You might want to calm down

just a tad as well Doctor.” He said.

Praxxis took a moment to collect himself and took several deep breaths until he

felt calm enough to continue. "Doctor I feel that I should inform you that I

intend to notify the CMO, Colonel Harper, and Lt Cmdr Jones about this incident

and recommend that you be relieved of duty, stripped of your medical license and

confined to quarters. I have nothing more to say." Praxxis stood there

waiting, not sure how Socom would choose to respond to that statement and

wondering if he might have just put his career in jeopardy. In retrospect, he

supposed he didn’t care if he had. He wanted nothing to do with a career where

such practices as this were permissible.

"Fine, I regret to inform you that you have passed this test.” Socom responded

smirking a little.

Praxxis reacted as though he had just been slapped. He shook his head as though

trying to clear it and looked at Socom with a perplexed look on his face, the

anger suddenly completely drained out of him. “…Excuse me?” was all he could

muster.

"Relax Middie.” Socom said now grinning. “Crewman Davies was in on it. In fact

I did this to see if you were going to be one of those doctors who couldn't even

wipe is own @$$ without help or one that could stand up for himself. Appears you are the

latter, and frankly Praxxis, had I found you to be the former I would have found

a way to transfer you @$$ out of medical.”

Praxxis couldn't help but let out a laugh. He was still a little confused but

also tremendously relieved. "Well sir, I suppose I'm glad to find that I hadn't

in fact stepped through some temporal distortion and found myself back in the

dark ages as I was beginning to suspect." He said it with a grin, the tension

in him visibly drained and his calm immediately returning. “Shall we get back

to it then?” he asked jerking his head behind him indicating the door back to

the main sickbay.

“You go ahead, I’ve got something I need to take care of right now.” He

responded picking up a couple of PADD’s that he’d set down.

He nodded still smiling a little and glad that this situation was done and over

with. "Aye sir." He turned and walked out of the lab and back into main

sickbay.

Socom stood there a moment waiting for the doors to close, he then looked at the

first PADD. “It's not over yet, my friend. Test 1 completed. Test 2 begins.” He said smiling inwardly to

himself. With that he exchanged PADDs, grabbing the one with his patient info and headed

into main sickbay.
