"Streak of Yellow"

03.10.08

USS Agincourt NCC-81762

“Streak of Yellow”

It was early in the first shift when Kansas had summoned Keltex to her office. The Caitian lieutenant commander had told the Klingon master chief petty officer of what she had planned, and how that plan had already been set into motion.

The young security chief explained of her desire to transfer off the Agincourt to a new duty station, the memo she that she had already sent to Harper and Day informing them of her decision, and how the feline recommended Keltex to take over for her. The remaining time spent in the Perseus Arm sector would be spent ensuring that the departmental leadership transition was smooth and went off without a hitch. The vacated position of second officer was not her fragging worry, or so Kansas had imparted in so many words to Keltex.

So, now the silence descended on the office, with Keltex standing on one side of the desk and Kansas standing on the other side. The feline waited patiently, wide paws planted firmly on the desk, while the older, silver haired Klingon took a minute to process the little dilithium bomb that she had dropped on his craggy head. They both just stared at one another.

Finally, with a clearing of his throat, the Master Chief began to speak. “I see.” His tone of voice held no accusation, it was just flat.

“You know, when I gave you that to wear,” he indicated the black leather and silver steel interweave baldric that the Caitian wore, “and invited you to join my House, I did so because I knew you could handle the responsibility with honor, and would not shirk your duty….perhaps I was wrong in my decision. You may have gold fur, but I never realized what a streak of yellow you seem to have across your back.”

Normally, Kansas would have gotten her back up (literally) and laid a swift one across the man’s jaw. But, the latest disciplinary fall out over her actions on the prison planet, was yet another wrist slap by her commanding shark officers in a series of wrist slaps; the Caitian was beaten and had had enough, and her dejection had finally taken over. She just did not have the energy any more. The whole godsdang universe could go frag itself.

“…your opinion is noted, Master Chief.” There was none of the customary fire in her tone, the confidence that the feline normally had was shot all to Hades. “Thank you for your time. Dismissed.”

Keltex saluted and turned smartly on one heel and exited the office without a backward glance.

Kansas was left there in the office, still standing with her paws planted on the desktop, staring at nothing in particular.
