XD Other Trekkies, oh my!

Hello fellow Star Trek fans. I just found this place and underwent an Academy SIM. Hurray! I have been roleplaying and watching Star Trek for years, but have never had the opportunity to combine the two. In fact, I had pretty much given up on finding any active Star Trek communities on the internet. It's gleefully exciting to find other people whose obsession levels probably out-rank my own.

Confession time, though... I have only watched TOS, TNG, and VOY. (Well, and the movies.) Believe me, I tried to sit through a handful of DS9 episodes... but for some reason, it just didn't click with me. I have noticed that this makes it terribly difficult to stay ontop of the whole Trek universe, though, so I will probably be forced to watch it at some point, just so that I can be on the same page as everybody else. Maybe I'll love it once I get to that sixth episode.

Anyhow. You all seem like you're running a solid ship here; I hope that I can keep plugging away at the Academy until I become more fluent. Roleplaying-wise, I've been chugging along with the same group of people for 9 years now, so we sort of take reading each other's minds for granted. It's probably good for me to stretch my muscles a little. : P

I'm another player that likes the old Roddenberry idealism, that never cared for DS9. I never watched much DS9, nor Enterprise. Yes, one does eventually pick up on the races and plots of the series one hasn't watched much.

Sure, rent some DVDs. Blunder through some academies. Just hang out and hang on. You'd blunder through fine.

Hi there!

Welcome to STSF! It's awesome to have you here. One resource I'd recommend is Memory Alpha (www.memory-alpha.org), a pretty comprehensive Star Trek Wiki. Sometimes I find it easier to refresh my knowledge there, instead of going out and buying loads of DVDs! Anyway, we are quite an active and friendly group, so don't hesitate to jump right in.

Welcome to STSF Mallamun; this is a wicked cool site to RP sim on.

But, as others have pointed out, it's really not necessary to have watched all the Treks in detail (I haven't....and I admit I don't remember every detail anyway. All hail Memory Alpha :-P). And very rarely do any of the games here encounter canon characters from the movies/shows as well.

Enjoy.

Well, since no one deemed responsible enough to do it:

::clears throat::

Welcome!

Two things to remember: 1) Any Academy hosted by STSF N'Dak is a guaranteed suicide mission [And that's a direct quote from his signature]. 2) Never compare the GMs to Captains Bligh or Queeg if you want to get graduate sometime before the turn of the century.

That being said, I'd recommend reading: How to sim, as well as: Tips from the Moose (Even if you are an experienced roleplayer, and have sat through an Acdemy or two, they still help)

For all your technobabble needs, visit Memory Alpha or Ex Astris Scientia.

Academy times are listed ET, so adjust as appropriate for your timezone. Academies are mandatory, and everyone is human. Save your character development for your Advanced Ship. Minimum graduation time is 3 Academies, but don't expect to graduate that quickly; the host teams prefer to see how are over a longer span of time. And once you are posted to your first Advanced Sim, it's strongly recommended that any ideas that go outside Trek canon be approved by your host team.

DS9 did show a darker side to the Federation and Starfleet in that much of the Federation's philosophy is a peacetime philosophy that is at best impractical in times of extended and total war (i.e. war against nonmilitary targets). That was the most intriguing part of the series and I wish they had carried more of this over to Voyager. However, they only fully showed this in a handful of episodes. Where they lost me was this intermingling of roles with a (at the time) mid-level military officer as a religious figure. This means, in essence, they lost me at the first episode. Plus that first episode was really hard to follow.

Anywho, don't forget to check out the Redstar Nightclub on Saturdays. It's as good as Quark's without all the Ferengi snickering.

Then again, if you want all the Ferengi snickering, you might try observing Aegis, Fridays at 10.
