Security Log

Security Officer's Log, Stardate 0802.15

Ensign Jaden Praxx recording:

Well, my first couple of weeks aboard Excalibur have certainly not been uneventful. During my routine patrol of the ship, I made my way to the bridge and was asked to take the tactical station as it was currently unmanned. I'd had some training with tactical systems so I was happy to help out. I hadn't been at the post twenty minutes when we approached a nebula in search of one of our fighter squadrons that had failed to make its regular check-in. While we're manuevering in towards the permiter of the nebula to begin searching for our fighter group, the ship is suddenly assaulted by some, thus far, undetected mines. We were hit several times and sustained some minor damage to the ship before we were able to withdraw to a safe distance. Since then we've managed to calibrate the sensors to detect the mines, and are now working on a way to diffuse and or destroy them. Unfortunately this is proving to be much more problematic than we would have liked. The mines themselves are emitting jamming signals which is making it virtually impossible to lock onto them with our targetting sensors. As a result, we can't use the ship's weapons to punch a hole through the minefield. Any attempt to detonate a large batch of them simultaneously, using a quantum torpedo for example and detonating it in the middle of the field, would more than likely result in a chain reaction explosion that may very well succeed in clearing out the minefield, unfortunately it would also almost certainly destroy our fighter squadron inside the nebula, assuming that they are in there at all. We've been working on other possible ways to get past the minefield, and although it seems just about everyone on the bridge has a suggestion on how we might go about that, so far most of them have been either impractical or extremely time consuming. So we continue working on a solution that will allow us access to the nebula in a timely manner that won't destroy half the sector in the process. No easy task to be sure...
