Shore Leave 2008!!

First of all, for those of you who may not have heard of our annual 'Shore Leave,' a brief explanation:

 

Every summer, a group of simmers from STSF come from around the country (I think we've yet to have an international participant, but they're welcome!) to meet together in real life for a weekend for a shared vacation, generally based around some nerdy attraction. It is not an official STSF event, just a coincidental meeting of sim nerds which all of STSF is coincidentally invited to. No one is prohibited, but we don't recommend it for persons under the age of 18 and no one in STSF takes responsibility for anyone else that attends. But that said, everyone always has lots of fun!

 

We saw some new faces last year, and we're looking forward to seeing even more this year...

 

We will be meeting in Las Vegas the weekend of August 8-10

 

No guarantees, but people will probably already being showing up as early as Wednesday, August 6.

 

The reason for having our Star Trek gathering in Las Vegas is, of course, the Star Trek Experience, a grouping of Star Trek themed shops, rides, restaurant, etc at the Las Vegas Hilton. And we are also planning on being in Vegas during the big annual Star Trek convention as well.

Tickets and time off of work are easier to get the earlier you start planning, though, so start planning now!

Yes, Yes Yes ... Shoreleave is 177 days away. Southwest airlines is now taking flight reservations through the end of August. Call the Hilton and get your room under the StarTrek Convention rates. Can't afford to room alone? Now's the time to start making friends!

I've just reserved my room at the LV Hilton. Going to stay a little longer this year... the 7th-11th.

 

And yes, I'll have the laptop again and the Verizon Wireless Broadband card. However I will have a pile of Hawaiian shirts. Don't know how hip they'll be, but if necessary I'm sure I can find one SOMEWHERE in Vegas.

::sniff:: I called the Hilton today to get my room reserved under the Convention group rate (SSTR8R) and was told it was sold out. Room *are* available for $225.95/night, just not the group rate. :(

 

Time to start pricing flight/hotel combinations.

Prepare for a wallet scare. I've been looking for a couple of weeks and didn't see much of a difference with the Hilton Selected.. I would prefer to stay at the Hilton and I'm gonna keep looking out for a deal from the Players Club Card that I had last year. Last year I got lucky, real lucky.. If I don't get a good offer in the next few months I might break down and stay somewhere else on the Monorail route, even the ::shudder:: strat..

I just called the Hilton and apparently there are still rooms available. However you cannot get the group rate unless you call their Group Reservations line. The regular reservation system and agents won't be able to apply the convention rate.

 

To get the group rate, call 1-800-635-7711 and let the person who answers know you would like the rates for the "Star Trek Convention". You should not need a convention code or anything else.

As we have said in previous years, this is not an official STSF event, but it is a locaiton and time when those who want to gather can do so, and we can hang out together.

Make SURE you are on the email list for your favorite Vegas hotels!

 

I went and checked prices at mine, and basically said, no way Dudes... About a week later (coincidence? Divine alignment of the Force?) I received an email (not telling you which hotel - those who know me know, lol) with outrageous summer price reduction deals - basically rooms for a hundred bucks less, and with free hotel perks that I usually pay for, about another thirty bucks a day.
