“Nicknames” – Part II of III

Log Series Part III

Stardate 48608.15

Age: 9

“You’re gonna break it” Garnoopy’s twin brother said.

The two of them were out in the barn, like they were quite a bit of time, and Garnoopy was messing around with a tractor engine.  He had always been one to try and take things apart to see how they worked, and this situation was no different.

“I will not, I just want to see how everything works together” Garnoopy replied.

His brother had always been like this; he never understood the importance of knowing how things worked.  He was just interested in making sure no one got into trouble and stayed safe.

While Garnoopy leaned into the tractor’s massive engine, his twin sat down on a hay bale to watch and wait.  Knowing his brother as he did, it was only a matter of time before something happened that would lend itself to a good laugh.

Reaching in, Garnoopy tugged at a long flexible pipe, it didn’t look like anything he had seen before, and it didn’t have any kinds of markings on it.

Leaning father in, Garnoopy pulled a little harder, trying to see if he could any markings further down the tubing, and without warning it snapped off.

Oil, which had been under pressure in the tube, shot out straight into Garnoopy’s face like a geyser.  His arms flailed up, eyes blinded with oil, he jerked backwards crashing his head into engine canopy.  The loud clang echoed through his head and throughout most of the barn.  Arms still flailing, Garnoopy stumbled backwards, right into the front tire of the tractor.  Disoriented, blinded, his head still ringing from hitting it on the engine canopy, he rolled over the tractor tire and landed unceremoniously into a large pile of cow manure.

Out of breath, dazed, and confused, Garnoopy pushed himself upright and with a shaking hand wiped the oil from his eyes.  He blinked rapidly, letting the tears flow freely to clear out any remaining oil and pushed himself upright.

His twin brother, face red with laughter, stood mesmerized by the scene that had just played out before him.  When he finally caught his breath he shook his head, tossed Garnoopy a barn towel and said, "Way to go, Slick" and walked out of the barn, still laughing.
