Multiple Registered Names?

Whats your opinion on having multiple registered names and posting with them?

Seems to me that it would be easier to just put all your character names in your signature so everyone knows who you are. What do you think?

Hey there,

Nice in theory, but impossible to mandate. In many ways, I've found it somewhat interesting. No one really seems to care who is where. The focus isn't so much who you are simming with but enjoying the game itself. One of the positive things I find in STSF. ;)

Well, I would more than likely have two names. I'd have this one for odinary posting. But for my character, I'd use the rank+last name type of name like I do at SFOL and on the Ranger web site message boards.

I personally don't care how many names you have registered.  ;)

As long as your posts are polite, and you don't cause trouble...  ya can be as many different people as you like.

Though I do generally go back and every 6 months prune any member who has not had any activity (no posting, no logging in).  :D

Huh? Hey I was just asking for people's opinions on their own behavior, not asking for a rule against it. I think people should be allowed to have multiple names for their different characters, but I don't think its very efficient (and people get confused who is who).

When you say "not had any activity," does that mean "none at all since signing on" or "none in the last six months?"

If the latter, what happens to all the posts?

Just curious.

I'm with Fred.  I play very different characters and feel the unique names help differentiate them.  It doesn't matter to me if people know I'm the player, but I don't feel it's especially important or relevant.  My fellow players on one ship don't need to know or care what I do on another ship.  Each is unique.

Many people [one] don't want others to know about other postings, or [two] don't want people associating one character to another one. Someone on the QoB may play a completely different-acting character on Aegis, and want to make sure people know that they are two different people. Because face it (I do this too), most of us, once we sim with one person once, refer to them by their first sign-in name. If they join more than one ship, they may not want to be just like the "original", thus causing confusion sometimes when they do things.

Just my 2 cents. ;)

Actually, I have a few usernames here and a few at the Star Trek website for their community. As HD mentioned, I play on multiple sims, and don't want to get people thinking I am trying to be my original character on my new posting.

So, that's my excuse for having more than one name. ;)

I have more than one, but I hate the little pop up thing that asks me every time I change pages who I want to be, even when I am signed in.

Generally if a person has posted on that username, I'll leave it.  What I'm trying to avoid is having 500 registered usernames with 0 posts, no logins, etc.

What happens sometimes are people come visit the boards...  register...  lurk around a bit...  and then for some reason or another...  never come back.  This is not something that happens just at STSF.  It happens at most all forums on the internet.  I help with a board that has over 50,000 unique members...  we go through and prune all members with 0 posts that have not had any activity in 6 months or more.

And just for clarification...  when I say no activity...  I mean not only not posting...  but also not logging in as well.  I know the last login date of all registered users.  I also know the last time they've made a post.  If both of those dates are over 6 months and they have yet to post, I'll prune the name.

I've been doing this since we hit the 6 month anniversary with STSF....  and so far, no one's even known I've done it.  So it's nothing major as ya'll can see.  :D

It is.  :;):  That's why I do it.  hehe

I try to avoid those really bad ideas that I get.
