"One Path Through Darkness, Part IV"

One Path through Darkness, Pt. IV

The Other Sar'vek

Four years ago

A hand reached for one of two flutes of red-toned wine that stood barely upright on the dark-tiled floor, tangled in carelessly tossed-aside garments. It raised to dark, rich lips, Sar'vek reaching to tug a silk sheet around her slender form before snagging the other glass, offering it to the man with whom she was currently sharing a bed.

He eyed it warily. "I do know of aur love for poisons, Sar'vek..."

She smirked, taking a small sip of the offered wine as proof of a lack of motive, and finally he took it, slowly drinking.

"Au think I'm bedding au to y'ya au?" she asked, adjusting so she could lean on an arm to peer at him.

He shrugged. "t'Ksa's assassins are known to be quite discerning. Au are rather suspect in aur affections."

t'Jhiin took another small bit of wine. "Just because a few on aur ship, t'Kaelhen, side with t'Temarr's interests, does na imply that au aurself are in my new employer's ill graces."

Fingering a strand of her hair, he considered the woman. "t'Ksa -- she must trust au."

"Ie."

"And au'd side with her until y'ya, I assume?"

"Ie." It was a lie, true -- Sar'vek would have pleasantly enough betrayed t'Ksa for a higher bidder. The lucky thing, for her, was that none had come about.

"An enviable position, then, to be so close to io of power."

A shrug. "I suppose..."

One month ago

"It has been... more than... pleasant... to be in aur company again, Sar'vek," t'Kaelhen murmured, catching her about the waist gently as the assassin redressed. "Too many years without au..."

"The Empire is large, and t'Ksa travels much of it," Sar'vek murmured. "It is difficult to dash back to the arms of a lover whenever I wish it."

"But au have h'nah," he replied, kissing the side of her neck gently. "And for that I am glad. If only au were na leaving so soon again..."

"Ie, but t'Ksa and t'Temarr together? T'Ksa would most certainly need her assassin at her side for that io..."

"I would rather y'ya than watch au fly away again," he murmured, still nuzzling her throat.

"Is that so?"

"Ie..."

A knife lodged quickly in his ribs, and Sar'vek grinned savagely as she pushed his bleeding form towards the bed. He stared, shocked at her, then at the blade. "Au... snake..."

"En'Riov," she addressed, slowly, "aur sympathies for Praetor Temarr are... disturbing to say the least. To me and my employer. So much that I was asked to come and... dispatch you." She smirked, smoothing the sheets beside where his dying body lay.

"And everything else?" he gasped with his dying breaths.

"Just for my amusement."

He hissed at her, and lay dead, the assassin finishing her dressing before departing.

Today

It would be a pity if t'Temarr's ship was destroyed in battle. With no survivors...

Na that Sar'vek wanted the Khre'Riov to put Her Highness in their brig, by any means. But after so much hostility between the pair, and so much preparation if Laehval had decided to attack Morgana...

Sar'vek smirked. It'd be quite the prize to take a praetor's life -- quite the assassin's resume builder.

Sincerely, she hoped that she'd have the opportunity. The battle, simply, had to end in their favor.
