Howdy there-I r Nub

Hey there,I'm a new 'freshman' and I look forward to hopefully understanding fully how to Star Trek Sim,however I have some questions.

1.I enjoy TOS and VOY and a bit of TNG but I was very young when VOY was out and only see reruns(every now and then) of older versions-is this a big deal in regards to me playing since I don't have FULL knowledge of character/race/postion etc. backgrounds?

2.Say if I were to go into the Academy for the first time and didn't understand something someone was saying will I be shunned or would I recieve help? Will the Academy be a place I can learn all there is to know(or as much as it can teach) on how to sim?

3.And last question, what is a good site that explains certain terms that may be used or the job that is to be done by a certain position?

Other than that...I'm a huge nerd who's looking for a new challenge outside of WoW :D

::clears throat::

Welcome!

Two things to remember: 1) Any Academy hosted by STSF N'Dak is a guaranteed suicide mission [And that's a direct quote from his signature]. 2) Never compare the GMs to Captains Bligh or Queeg if you want to get graduate sometime before the turn of the century.

That being said, I'd recommend reading: How to sim, as well as: Tips from the Moose

For all your technobabble needs, visit Memory Alpha or Ex Astris Scientia.

Academy times are listed ET, so adjust as appropriate for your timezone. Academies are mandatory, and everyone is human. Save your character development for your Advanced Ship. Minimum graduation time is 3 Academies, but don't expect to graduate that quickly; the host teams prefer to see how are over a longer span of time. And once you are posted to your first Advanced Sim, it's strongly recommended that any ideas that go outside Trek canon be approved by your host team.

Definitely expect a challenge since this is a text-based sim; ain't no fancy graphics here.

Hi and welcome!

1.I enjoy TOS and VOY and a bit of TNG but I was very young when VOY was out and only see reruns(every now and then) of older versions-is this a big deal in regards to me playing since I don't have FULL knowledge of character/race/postion etc. backgrounds?

This shouldn't be a problem. You only need familiarity with the Trek universe. If you're more comfortable in TOS, we have 1 TOS sim (Hood). But you certainly don't need to know every episode of every Trek ever shown.

When it comes time to write your own character (once you graduate academy), you should write one you are familiar with. Human is a perfectly good race. You can become familiar with other characters by reading their bios.

2.Say if I were to go into the Academy for the first time and didn't understand something someone was saying will I be shunned or would I recieve help? Will the Academy be a place I can learn all there is to know(or as much as it can teach) on how to sim?

You could always ask them what they meant by private message (PM) or PM one of the academy game masters (GMs).

3.And last question, what is a good site that explains certain terms that may be used or the job that is to be done by a certain position?

Our ship positions are explained in our help section, and Memory Alpha is a good resource for Trek technobabble (both linked to by Marx above).

No, you will definitely NOT be shunned, as the Academy is exactly the place to go so you can learn how we sim in STSF at your own pace. There are cadets who spend months going to Academies and that's just fine. You don't want to graduate until you feel comfortable with our conventions and process and you won't graduate until the GMs think you're ready. If anyone makes you feel shunned or behind the curve in any way, you let the GMs know and we will have fun zapping them with Klingon painsticks and then pushing them out an airlock (we'll even let you press the "Vent" button).

Welcome!
