Kairi

A Concerned Parent

The room was dark, with the exception of a dim light shining over a desk. At the desk sat a man with a pale green complexion and pointed ears. He was aged and wore a Romulan Galae uniform. An ISD rested in his hand, which he was intently reading. The room was quiet as he read, save for a low hum which indicated he was on board a ship. The silence was soon shattered by the sound of the door chime. The man looked to the door with a very stern expression, and spoke with a commanding voice. “Enter!” He didn’t like being disturbed.

As the door opened a tall, slender Romulan woman stepped inside. She too wore a Galae uniform, and her straight black hair rested just off her shoulders. “Enarrain, here is my report.”

The man’s expression quickly changed when he saw the young woman enter. He motioned her to his desk, placing the ISD he was reading in front of him. “Very good.”

The woman stepped up to his desk, placing the report upon it. She caught a glance of the ISD. It had an image of a young human Starfleet Officer. Her expression instantly turned sour, as she picked up the device. It was a detailed report on Kairi Kassem. The woman instantly recognized the name. “Why are you bothering with this? Eneh, you could get into trouble.”

The Romulan officer looked up at his younger counterpart and smiled. “I will be fine, Paenhe. That report is public knowledge, and anyone may access it.” Grinning, he tried to ease the young woman’s concerns. “Did you know she is an engineer just like you? Perhaps one day she will work her way up and become a chief just as you did.”

The woman’s expression didn’t change. “I do not care. I remember the day you confessed to us about her. You nearly broke Mother’s heart, and mine…”

“She understood, as should you.” He reached up taking the report of Kairi into his hands. “She is my paenhe, my blood, just as you are.”

“But why are you concerned about this now? From what I saw in that report, she is living a good life in the Federation.” The young woman was still a little annoyed by the whole thing.

“Because of this…” He said grabbing another ISD from his desk, handing it to her.

The Romulan woman looked over the report. “The Agincourt? That name sounds familiar.”

“It should, it’s the ship that aided in capturing the rogue Rihannsu that attacked Earth. It also happens to be the vessel that Kairi serves on.” A grim look came across his face. “And it has vanished.”

“Vanished, how?”

“My contacts tell me it was involved in a battle with some unknown ships, along with another Federation vessel. Apparently these ships can create subspace rifts in which they use to travel. The Agincourt pursued the unknown vessels into the rift and vanished. No one knows where it ended up, even the Federation.”

The Romulan woman sighed softly. She was beginning to understand why he was worried. “Perhaps they are fine, and looking for a way to return as we speak. If Kairi is as talented and resourceful as you say she is, I am willing to bet she will make it.”

A smile crossed the features of the older Romulan’s face, as he looked up to his paenhe. “I know she will…”
