Sensor Networking Briefing

Computer, Open Personal Log #3

Ensign Siegfried Kas, Assistant Engineering Officer

November 11, 2157

Briefing Paper for Senior Officers: Networking Sensors – Ship to Ship, Ship to Probes

Background: When two EM waves combine from two different sources, there are two possible and desirable effects: First is a multiplication of their relative strengths with an apparent shift to the point of intersection of their origin. The second is that these waves can be used to cancel out other waves. For both cases, imagine a pool of liquid, in which two different waves are created. In the first case, the waves meet and combine in such a way as to create a single, larger wave. For the second case, when the waves meet, they cancel each other out completely, leaving a smooth surface.

History: From my background in restoring historical aircraft, these methods were used to various degrees in the early 21st Century. They used a network of transmitters, located in aircraft of all sizes and capabilities, including manned and unmanned. Some were even used in missles.

Status: With our upgrades, including the implementation of our tactical operations center, linking to our new escorts, NV Trudeau and Manchester, and implementing software into our computers, all needed technology and equipment is available and in inventory. During my Cadet days, I won a few beers by upgrading some shuttles so that they used each others sensors in active and passive modes to increase our abilities to sense the opposition, and mask our signals. I need to work out some details on how to put sensors and data communication equipment into the torpedoes, and also on extending their range.

Request:

1. Modification to 8 Torpedoes (4 on Challenger, 2 each on escorts), to include long range tanks, miniaturized sensors, and data networking subspace transmitters.

2. Data communication links to NV Trudeau and Manchester, including upgrading computer systems to allow remote operations and assistance.

3. Implement Computer software upgrades, from Star Fleet Academy files stored under Cadet Kas/Historical Information/combat simulations/software patches/shuttle sensors.

4. Science Department personnel support for calibration and modification of equipment.

Estimated Time for Modifications: 72 Labor hours for each myself and Science Department personnel.

Please advise. Computer, send message to CO, XO, and all Department Heads. End recording.

::sighs deaply:: ...speaking outloud to no one but himself, "I hope they like this, and that it works on this ship."

::puts down message pad, gets up from desk in quarters, picks up portaits of a pretty girl behind a bar and his parents, kisses both, puts them back on his desk. Changes into pajamas, turns out lights, and goes to bed.::icon3.gif
