"A Time to Tow" - LtJg Kroells & Garnoopy

Lieutenant Junior Grade Travis Kroells

Lieutenant Junior Grade Garnoopy

Personal Log Stardate 50305.10

“A Time to Tow”

Garnoopy stepped out of the ready room, his usual unhappy looking Klingon face looking no different. Moving across the bridge, he said to Lieutenant Kroells behind him "Lieutenant, I suggest we get to work on this problem."

Kroells looked to Garnoopy "Yes, that would be the logical area to start.” Kroells cracked a small smile at his bit of sarcasm

Garnoopy stepped behind the tactical station, no smile present, he growled slightly and said, "We should move quickly. Time is of the essence."

Immediately tapping a panel, Garnoopy pulled up the information they currently had. "We cannot move the Reaent any father in, she is to large, and will be torn apart by the waves. She is to big."

Kroells dropped the smile realizing this was no time to joke.  He led Garnoopy over to an open science station, not far away from Lieutenant Goad. "I think that I have a plan to boost out sensors."

Garnoopy grunted, and looked at the Lieutenant, "What is your plan that you have so soon?"

Travis sat down taping panels and pulling up some saved data  "Well Lieutenant, have you ever heard of a towed array?"

"No" Garnoopy responded with.

Kroells tapped his panel bringing up a diagram of a shuttle, "Well in the late 20th and early 21st centuries Earth submarines would tow a long cable behind them as they sailed.”

Garnoopy looked at the panel, "What is the purpose of this cable that they used?"

Kroells brought up another diagram, "A towed array is simply a long cable that the submarine would let this cable out and it would be pulled behind the submarine, and it would increase their sensor out put by ten fold allowing them to use their sonar for many more miles then normal."

Garnoopy grunted, "And you think we can apply this to the Reaent? We both know that this ship is to large to fly any closer to the source of these waves."

"Yes but," Kroells paused as he brought up the diagram of the shuttle again, "A shuttle craft isn’t."

"A shuttle could ride the waves,” Garnoopy said, looking at the panel. "But you’re saying that by extending a long cable behind the shuttle, it will allow us to have full sensor capabilities?" Garnoopy said, not believing this to be true or possible.

Kroells turned to face him, "Well I believe that we would have comm abilities all of the way to the moon, but I cant be sure of it."

Garnoopy grunted, "You should find out what abilities this "towed array" will give us, and what benefits it will have over flying just a plain shuttle in." Moving to a panel next to Kroells, Garnoopy tapped, looking at the diagrams of this idea.

Kroells sighed a little, "The towed array would definitely keep us in comm range much longer then just sending a lone shuttle. That would also allow us to transmit out sensor data to the Reaent for a longer distance as well"

Tapping the panel, Garnoopy said "So, you want to extend a long cable behind a shuttle, and using that as basically a large antenna to increase comm and sensor range?"

"Basically yes,"  Kroells tapped the panels at his stations bringing up the estimates on the boosted comm and sensor ability. “This is the best estimates on what the towed array would gives us versus a regular shuttle just flying in"

Garnoopy looked at the readings, "Quite a difference. A lone shuttle would be in comm for only a short distance, compared with the whole way with this 'towed array'."

"Yes, but we'd have to not only weave through the waves as they come but we'd also have to drag this cable all the way out there. But in my opinion we need to do it."

Garnoopy grunted, "But we cannot fly the Reaent in, so the shuttle is the only option." Still looking at the readings, "If the cable is bendable, flying around shouldn't be a problem."

"Yes and despite the risks this is most likely the safest way to go” Kroells said.

Tapping the panel, "It looks as though the cable needs to be 5 km long to keep us in comm range of the Reaent." Garnoopy turned to Kroells, "Can we produce a cable this length?"

"I'm sure engineering could produce one in short notice, but we'd need at least two people to go on the shuttle, One to obviously pilot it, and at least one more to make sure the cable does snag etc."

Garnoopy grunted, "At least three people. One person to watch the cable, one to fly, and one to monitor sensor systems. This appears to be a solution that will work" Garnoopy said, and tapped a panel, downloading the information into a PADD.

Kroells nodded, "Know all we have to do is wait for Fred to calm down and leave the ready room so we can show the proposal to him"

Garnoopy grunted, and responded by picking up the PADD. "I'll give this to the Captain as soon as possible. I suggest you finalize any details about this plan soon" Garnoopy said.

Kroells began to tap the panels again, "I plan on putting down the components required to make the cable and heading down to engineering to see that it's made immediately. That is if the Captain approves of this..."

Garnoopy nodded, "Understood. I'll inform you once the Captain makes his decision."

Kroells turned away from Garnoopy as he began to download the info onto a padd, "all right then..."

Picking up his PADD, Garnoopy headed to tactical, to quickly reread the plan, and then hand it to the Captain.

Finally finished with the PADD, Kroells returned to his normal science station hoping that for once something would go as planed on this ship.
