Departments

When you guys were cadets (or the rest of you that are!), how did you discover which department you enjoyed playing the most? I was more drawn to Medical at first, but last night I played Engineering for the first time and I really enjoyed it! I think that might be my choice of department now when I get promoted to an advanced game.

Also, where do you go online to get information to better play these departments? Besides Memory Alpha. :D

It just depends on what you're really good at. A couple of my other characters are in other departments like science and medical, but my first love is engineering. Which btw, I could use a couple good engineers. Keep Agincourt in mind when you graduate. :D ::Insert Agincourt commercial here.::

As far as finding a place...Hmm...I kinda winged it. But I'm sure someone else has a place you could check out. ;)

Hi Luna: I'm agreeing with Kairi - it all depends on what you're good at. But, it comes down to what you enjoy and really want to RP as, and it isn't always "right there in front of you", so if you try everything out then you are good to go and usually have an idea of your likes and dislikes.

Like you, I was drawn to medical when I first started here in '04, and eventually was posted to an advance ship in the medical department. However, I applied to the SEC dept for Agincourt thinking it might be "neat" to try "something different", and I have not looked back since. Now, SEC is definitely my first choice for simming, and at the time I really had no clue what I was doing. :-D

Personally, Science just sets me off. The technobabble kills me, and I just completely am lost whenever I do the posting in the acads, and I really don't have an interest in the sci area, so it's not my first choice of postings, no.

XO> Sciences, what have you got on the sensors? Can you explain that nebula distortion?

Me Thinking> Uh, its really big and gassy? With blue wavy things floating.

::Brain goes bye bye::

ENG and Medical are pretty cool to role play in though - they are my backup choices. And Kairi needs engineers on the Agincourt! ::blatant plug::

As for something other then Memory Alpha to check out depts? I really dont have any ideas about that. I just sorta went with my knowledge of the depts from the Trek TV shows and movies.

I loved ENG but a GM (I wont metion names(STSF Jaimie)) made me play somthing else (TAC) and it was very fun so after that I decided I would try SEC so I played (Havent played SCI and have only played Medical once or twice)

Secretly, I did apply for agincourt as a ENG, TAC and SEC

I tried out as many positions as possible in the Academy. I even graduated as an engineer (unbelievable!!!). My problem was that I had never seen the shows in English so I didn't know any of the technobabble that's used in the shows. So I figured I'd do in sim what I'm best at in RL...medbabble. Since then most of my characters have been in medical. Anyway, the longer you play the better you get at playing posts you don't usually like.

My advice would be to just try out as many positions as possible in the Academy sims before deciding on a department for your advanced sim.

I wanted OPS, but I was playing HELM when I graduated. When I was assigned to the Reaent I was HELM but later transfered to HOPS.

A couple months later, still an Ensign, I joined the Qob-Lakota as CENG. Yup, I was a Department Chief and the lowest ranked person on the ship at the same time. Later on we got an AENG who eventually became a GM. However, he was still an Ensign in my department and I still got to boss him around. ;)

It works out though. OPS and ENG have a lot in common. Our OPS is usually not on the bridge, and I am usually not in Main Engineering, so I usually play OPS anyway.

Oh, yeah, I am also a fighter pilot on the Reaent, the twin of my earlier HOPS character, although the fighter pilot character thinks he is an only child. Oh, yeah, he is half Romulan and doesn't know it. Eventually I need to have him stumble on his brother's records, and the brother knew he was half Romulan, but haven't found a way to do it yet.

i've mainly done security, tac and eng. i cant say i remember ever doing anything science-type. so i guess i cant really say that its a bad thing per se, but its not really an area that i'm interested in.

security though is where my interest is, and thats where i got to on the arcadia. i like it.

as for where to learn to play positions better, i'd have to go with the majority of the comments that are already left, go with what you know, and i'll add, you cant watch enough star trek to learn it too. ;)

Ooo...I have both of those. They are fun reads. ;)

I just remembered the Player's Guide has a technobabble chart in it. I may have to use it sometime.

To Answer your question, When I started I didn't know anything about Engineering. I Went to the bookstore and bought a couple of ST Books. I was also Lucky enough to win a few ship books at a con once. These are what I used to get through engineering. I wanted medical as Thats where my RL training sorta leads. The only thing open on the ship I was really wanting to get on was Eng. So I had to learn it. I made my way from Ens in Eng to Chief of Eng and then to XO of the USS Republic. So if you like to read, there you go. They also have the Technical manual out on CDRom. That helped a bit too.

I hope this helps.

Well, I can honestly say I have played every position on a ship, but my favorite is medical/science. I graduated (don't ask when) at TAC. I've had characters in all departments, and my least favorite is engineering (mostly because of my lack of technobabble expertise).

Hey Luna,

My advice would be to play all the departments you can in academy. Get the feel of each one. Then, when you graduate pick your favorate. As for the technobabble stuff, go to the different advanced sim websites. Alot of them have great tech pages, like Challenger ::smile::. Or, go to some of the sites online. Go to google and search "Star Trek technology technobabble" Some of the sites like Ex Astris Scientia or Memory Alpha (Click to view page) have great tech pages where you can find all the Trek technobabble you need. ::grin:: Good luck.
