Dox Maturin

"Question History"

"Question History"

Duty Log - 0707.31

The doors to the main science lab slid open with a hiss and Lieutenant junior grade Dox Maturin crossed the threshold, stomping passed the officers gathered there. He hammered his fist into the locker room panel, opening the door, and disappeared just as quickly as he had arrived. The science officers, mostly lower grade, had suddenly become quiet at the sight of Dox. There were a few murmurs as a few asked each other what was wrong with him. Ensign Elizabeth Jordan quickly took to her feet and followed him. Besides Tristan and perhaps Joy, Elizabeth had spent the most time talking to Dox and she felt closer to him than any of the others did. And something she saw concerned her.

The locker room door closed behind her and she found Dox standing in front of a sonic wash, cleaning his hands. Blood vaporized off his skin in the sonic waves. She furrowed her brow and stepped closer, "Dox, are you alright?" She looked straight at the blood, "what happened?"

Maturin jumped a bit, not expecting anyone to be behind him. He turned to face her, pulling a rag from a wall hook and wiping sweat and grime from his face. "There was a casualty on the bridge," he said flatly, "Ensign Fodder is dead."

"Who?" she asked, then quickly felt guilty that she had no idea who the poor dead man was.

"The Scorpiad forces have arrived," he continued, throwing the rag onto the floor, "they will be here shortly. A fleet unlike anything I have ever seen. I...do not know how we are going to pull through this."

"What kind of fleet?"

"Hundreds of warships, thousands of fighters. They have hit us quite hard."

Elizabeth shook her head, looking down at the deck, a tear falling down her cheek. "I hate these things," she whimpered, referring to the Scorpiads.

Dox glared at her. "Do you ever ask yourself why?"

She scrunched her face at him. "Why what?"

"Why you hate them. Why we are at war."

"They attacked us. They barricaded the wormhole," her voice raised, becoming angry with him. How could he question their duty? "They are vicious, they live to conquer. You've read the reports, you know. The Dominion, they..."

"And we trust the Dominion?" Dox spat with disgust, "we trust that lying vorta? Yes, I have read the report. How do we know what really happened? How are the Scorpiad any different from the Dominion? You are too young to know, but the Dominion are just as ruthless."

"The Scorpiad kill without provocation, and without mercy. How can you question what we're doing?"

"Is that not what everyone feels about the enemy? Ensign...Elizabeth, things are not always what they seem. People do not achieve all that the Scorpiads have achieved without a certain measure of balance in their society. We have barely scratched the surface, yet we are more than willing to wipe them out on sight. I just want to know why are not questioning this war. History is written by the victors. The Dominion wrote that history."

Elizabeth was shouting now, furious at him though she couldn't understand why, "The Dominion is trying to help us. We're allies now!"

"The Dominion slaughtered us. They too live for conquest. They murder innocent unborn children," he crashed his back against the wall and slumped to the floor, tears flowing down his cheeks. "How could we have betrayed the memory of those who died by joining them in the conquest of another race," he whispered.

She blinked at him, surprised at this sudden burst of emotion. She had never seen him act that way. It was as if he was someone else entirely. Sympathetic, she knelt next to him and put a hand on his shoulder. "I don't know what to say," she spoke quietly, "but maybe you're right. Maybe we don't know the truth."

"There is something more to these Scorpiads. I can feel it," Dox looked into her eyes, "and we should not rest until we find it. I do not...do not want to kill any more."

"What can I do?"

"Question history. I need to talk to our department head, but now I need to get back to the bridge," he smiled weakly at her as he brushed away the lingering tears on his face, "in the meantime, try to pull up all the information you can about these Scorpiads. Maybe we can find a solution that does not involve eradicating them."
