Trek Movie Update

47 posts in this topic

Hey all,

I was reading that Zachary Quinto has been named to the role of young Spock in the upcoming Trek movie. What do you think about this selection and what do you think about including Leonard Nimoy and William Shatner, as well?

Well I think that who ever they pick someone is going to have somthing bad to say I think Quinto who do a decent job

J.J. Abrams, creator of Lost and Alias and the auteur who will be reviving the Star Trek franchise next year, said Thursday that his take on the sci-fi classic will feature dual Mr. Spocks, the younger of the two to be played by Heroes villain Zachary Quinto, as reported earlier this week by E! Online's TV blog.

And serving as young Spock's older and wiser incarnation will be none other than Leonard Nimoy, who was on hand when the good news was announced during Paramount Pictures' panel at Comic-Con, aka fanboy heaven, in San Diego.

Per the closely guarded script penned by Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci, Quinto will star as Spock in his pre-Wrath of Khan days. Nimoy, meanwhile, will have a meaty cameo.

When asked how much of his take on the half-Vulcan Enterprise veteran will be inspired by Nimoy, Quinto, was last seen opening skulls and getting skewered as the power-hungry Sylar on Heroes, said: "Well, as much as he'd like it to be, since he's working on the film, which is an honor."

But, "I certainly intend to bring my own spin to it, and working with these guys, I'm sure I'll find it," he added.

Abrams' addition to the canon, which is slated for a Christmas Day 2008 release, couldn't be coming at a better time, at least for Trekkers, considering there hasn't been a new addition to the cinematic series in more than five years, and because, for the first time in what seems like forever, there is no first-run Star Trek spinoff series on the air right now.

While the last cinematic permutation of the series was 2002's Star Trek: Nemesis, Nimoy hasn't played big-screen Spock since 1991's Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country.

Shooting on the new film—which, taking a cue from Casino Royale and Batman Begins, will bring us back to where it all began for Spock and pal James T. Kirk—is expected to kick off in November.

Abrams, who promised that he'd return to Comic-Con next year with more scoop, said that the role of young Kirk has not yet been cast and that they're trying to find a way to get William Shatner involved.

And…Star Trek isn't the only long-dormant franchise that's injecting some old blood and playing host to a familiar face.

Director Steven Spielberg also revealed (via video feed) Thursday at Comic-Con that Karen Allen, Harrison Ford's love interest from Raiders of the Lost Ark, will appear in the upcoming fourth Indiana Jones movie

Joined (on tape) by cast members Ford (in full Indy gear), Shia LeBeouf and Ray Winstone, Spielberg delighted fans with the news that the spunky Marion Ravenwood was primed for a comeback.

No additional footage from the as-yet untitled film was presented, but the audience sounded psyched enough, allowing the all-star crew behind the ambitious endeavor to rest on their laurels for just a little longer.

This is from Yahoo TV Its pretty intresting

Some are going to love it, some are going to hate it, can't make everyone happy, especially not when it comes to Star Trek. Personally, I hope they make one with a decent story behind it that's not exclusively about special FX (mind you, those should be in there too). Basically, something aimed at entertaining grown ups and not something aimed at getting kids to like Star Trek that will leave a huge amount of actual Trek fans disappointed.

Any excuse I have to possibly see Zachary Quinto in a tight outfit will be worth my money to go see. Add the fact it's Star Trek on top of that, I am definitely going to give the movie a chance.

I'm afraid Star Trek has lost its soul.

The same thing was said (in some form) when The Next Generation came on the scene in magazine articles and interviews from that time, etc. (A new captain and crew? It wont be Star Trek, etc) Now look at it - it is the beloved "first" spin off.

I'll go and check out the 2008 film.

Heh. I might as well see it also. After all I want to see just how badly Paramount can screw up what's become their flagship franchise.

Startrek.com has an article saying that they're negotiating to have Anton Yeltin play Chekov. Thus confirming that Chekov actually is in the movie.

And I think I'm going to voice my opinion on the whole casting thing. TV actors? Now, I'm probably a little biased, and I know that Nimoy and Shanter were tv actors but...TV actors? I'm all for having lesser known actors, but I'd rather it be a lesser known movie actor then a more well known tv actor (Zachary Quinto). I don't really care, but I don't want to see someone in the movie just because people think he's hot and they saw him on TV.

Actually I had reservations about it back when I heard that JJ Abrams was doing it. But I'll continue to hope that it will be good.

I am going to skip this film. I mean after the bombs known as Nemisis, and Voyager. Now the idea of slapping together a new set of actors to play an old crew. Sorry, its not going to work for me.

I found a conformation on Chekov, and a list of other roles they are looking to cast.

Chekov is the second character to be cast after Spock, who will be portrayed at different ages by "Heroes" actor Zachary Quinto and Leonard Nimoy, the original half-vulcan. Casting is still underway for James T. Kirk, Leonard "Bones" McCoy, Nyota Uhura, Hikaru Sulu, Montgomery "Scotty" Scott, the film's villain and the Federation captain. Abrams is expected to sign bigger-name actors for the latter two parts.

Although no official plot has been revealed, it's believed that the younger casting indicates that the movie will chronicle the Enterprise crew during their time at Starfleet Academy.

Thing is, Ensign Chekov would have gone through Academy years after Captain Kirk. If they care about consistency at all, the whole Enterprise bridge crew shouldn't be going through the Academy together.

So, either they don't care about consistency, or they are doing a TOS era movie rather than a prequel.

I'm feeling iffy about this movie. I mean, the idea sounds good, and with JJ Abrams directing, I've decided to hope for the best with this one. However, the thing with Chekov does worry me some. ENT did little to try to preserve Trek cannon with...well the very first episode.

I'm pretty sure this movie is going to make or break it for the Trek franchise, movie, tv or otherwise so even if it does suck, we should all go see it just so they think theres a reason for more Trek :P

I think the Trek franchise has already been "made". If people haven't made their minds after more than 20 years in syndacation, 4 spinnoffs (counting TAS), 10 and now 11 movies, and a host of video games, comic books, a theme park in Las Vegas, novels, and who knows how many fan works - some staring the original actors - if they haven't been convinced by now they aren't going to be.

Whether Star Trek XI sucks or not is another issue, but I think Trek's place in history is solid.

Heh, Simon Pegg is SUCH a strange choice for Scotty that it actually feels like it could work! If that makes sense.

Simon Pegg? Great, there's now only a slim hope that I'll like and take this movie seriously. The thought of Simon Pegg in the movie just makes me laugh. The thought of Simon Pegg with a Scottish accent makes me laugh even harder.

Don't get me wrong. I like Simon Pegg, and I love Shaun of the Dead. Which is why I won't be able to take him seriously, since he's so funny. So he better do some pretty convincing acting.

I don't think anyone questions whether Trek has a place in history, but so does the AMC Gremlin, but very few people are excited about it. I think everyone's worry is that this may be the franchise's last shot at attracting new fans and having any new entertainment value. I know there are some that will argue that Nemesis wasn't a bad film, but it got some of the worst reviews, even from diehard Trek loyalists (Picard driving a dune buggy? Who needs tires in the future? Sorry, where was I?)

Simon Pegg did a decent job in Mission Impossible 3, so let's hope he will play it straight for this, eh?

I am not happy with these castings at all. The movie is turning into exactly what I was afraid it was going to be--a rehash of TOS with Actors who are either going to try and mimic the original cast and fail or "re-invent" the characters in a way that's not faithful to the show.

:P

"Is it true, that there's a place in a man's head, that if you shoot it with a phaser it will explode?!"

Heh, I love Simon Pegg in Shaun and Hot Fuzz but I am a little wary about him being able to act Trek....Scotty on top of it.

Oh well.

You know, I have an odd feeling that he's gonna pull it off well and all these jokes will be long forgotten.

Or he'll just be over the top hilarious, but not true to character at all.

Either way works for me really :P

Here's the newest cast member added. Winona Ryder as Spock's mom.

As Spock would say, "fascinating."
