I was at Baltimore a few weeks ago, will be in Vegas, and was at Denver's Starfest. I'll likely be at Nan Desu Kan and Mile-Hi in Denver later this year, as well.

:P

I'll be there. I had to miss the one in Baltimore this year because of my back but I am NOT going to miss Vegas.

See you all in a few days.

I hate to ask but why is this one special and not the others?

Other than the 40th Anniversary of Star Trek? Or is it because A9'll be there in a pink tutu at the STSF table?

Woo Hoo! (about the 40th anniversary, not the whole pink tutu thing ::tries to lose the mental image of Space Ghost in tutu::).

Looking forward to fun, fans, Vegas, and meeting other STSFers. See ya there! :-)

Well there are alot of others conventions this year but why make such a huge deal about this one?

Well there are alot of others conventions this year but why make such a huge deal about this one?

Big Deal 1: STSFers make an effort to get to the Vegas con - hey, its Vegas! Vegas is a big attraction anyway, so any pop culture convention will attract thousands (what was the attendance number last year? 13,000?) due to the vacation destination alone.

Big Deal 2: The con is taking place at the Hilton hotel - the hotel has a Trek attraction (The Experience and Quarks Bar) that has been in operation for 10 years now. That leads me to: why *not* have a Trek convention at the hotel that already has a big Trek attraction?

General Big Deal: It's the 40 year annivesary, as mentioned, of Trek, and the 20th anniversary of TNG, celebrated in Vegas. w00t!

Location, location, location. :-)

::hands Kansas Brillo to exorcise the image from her mind::

Because it's the 40th Anniversary of Star Trek, Fish. What other television series that premiered in 1967 has endured this long?

    1. The Original Series (1967-69)
    2. The Animated Series (1973)
    3. 6.5 Original Cast Movies (1979-1994)
      I. The Motion Picture
      II. The Wrath of Khan
      III. The Search for Spock
      IV. The Voyage Home
      V. The Final Frontier
      VI. The Undiscovered Country
      VII. Generations (Portion of)

    4. The Next Generation spin-off (1987-1994)

    5. 3.5 Next Generation Cast movies (1994-2002)

      VII. Generations
      VIII. First Contact
      IX. Insurrection
      X. Nemesis

    6. Deep Space 9 (1993-99)

    7. Voyager (1995-2001)

    8. Enterprise (2001-2005)

    9. Innumerable Novel Spin-offs

    10. Multiple PC/Game console video games

    11. Model kits of various scales, that are still (relatively) in production/available

    12. Action Figures

    13. This particular Role Playing Game forum you belong to (199x-Present)

That is what makes this convention so important.

STSF has a long tradition of a once-a-year get-together; in fact, STSF practically got its start at such a meeting. It used to be at Baltimore's "Shore Leave" convention, but some years ago there was a decision to look for a more central location and to leave a venue that was starting to get overcrowded. Vegas has been the site for the annual meet-up ever since. Sometimes it coincides with a convention, sometimes it doesn't. This year it does, and that's why STSF is making such a fuss about the Vegas con.

Meet in Vegas anyway without the convention? That's what I gathered from the Colonels comment, Ensign Fish.

One of the better Trek cons I ever attended was on a smaller venue - 1993 in Valley Forge PA - featured the "three docs" - DeForest Kelley (McCoy), Alexander Siddiq (Bashir), Gates McFadden (Crusher).

One of the worst cons was prior to that year (sometime btw 1990 - 1993), same area, with Jonathan Frakes (Riker) as one of the guests. He arrived late, and did no autographs. I *think* that his flight was delayed, but I'm sure many of his fans were disappointed that day. It was not a pretty situation.

One of my "creepiest" con moments came in the late 90's at a combined Trek/Buffy con - the actor who played as "Xander" (I cannot recall his name) on Buffy could not make the con due to an ear infection, so he called the convention and answered audience questions, which turned out to be kind of neat. The "creepy" part came when a young girl (say 13 - 16) didn't ask any questions, but proceeded to inform "Xander" that this was the second con she attended that he had canceled on. Oh boy - the moment seriously resonated with female stalker vibes, and I know I wasn't the only audience member that picked up on it. The actor handled the situation really well though with his responses to her.

For more than 10 years, players and Hosts/GMs from SFOL and then STSF have been meeting once a year, just for the fun of it. As was previously stated, we started off at a convention in Hunt Valley, MD (called ShoreLeave), just to pick a place with a mild common interest for us all, a Trek-like event. However, we just gather to meet each other and put a scary face to the scary online persona (ok, not scary, creepy? eerie?? Unsettling??? Oooh, no, wait - Weird!)

We gave up on Hunt Valley shortly after STSF was formed since a lot of the "regulars" wanted to meet somewhere else. So, we've been meeting Vegas, since it's cheap to get to, cheap to eat there, there is the Star Trek Experience there (hey, we gotta have *some* kinda trek thing) and, hey, it's Vegas, Baby! We did not go there during any Trek convention. Last year we moved it to Orlando, FL after asking folks on the Boards what location might boost attendance. Well, only 10 of us showed up in FL, so it's back to Vegas. Also, we decided to experience Trek weirdness in full by going during the official convention there and then completely lost our minds and got a vendor table for this year, with nothing to sell but ourselves.

Why do we go? Because we like to see our online friends and meet new ones!

I always seem to have random run in with people at conventions. Almost got hit by Marina Shirtis's Limo, accidently yelled at Brent Spinner, pushed by Amanda Tapping (she said sorry tho). I always seem to be in the wrong place at the wrong time and I never realize who the actors are until after the fact.

Oh boy do I love convention stories, can't wait to hear about the one's from Vegas.

Polls were tried. That's how it wound up in Florida last year. Attendance actually dropped, so it moved back to Vegas. Somewhere on the forums there is a thread with guidelines for proposing a new location, but I can't find it at the moment. It involves finding out information on transportation, accomodations, entertainment, and the like.

In any event, you should be aware that ShoreLeave (wherever it happens to land) is an informal meet-up of friends, the vast, vast majority of whom are legal adults. We take no responsibility for other people's children. So those of you in the young teens thinking about attending, be aware that you'll probably need to talk your parents into coming to be responsible for you.
