Open Ensign Here!

46 posts in this topic

Now as some of you know, I just graduated from the academy. I'm an ensign, but have many extensive years with a forum a good deal of people here care about. Basically this is a call to CO/XO to drop me a line if they have an open spot in the security deparment, and if the sim is the following. 24th centry, and isn't 10 PM EST Wensday, or 11 PM EST Fridays. Besides that, this is Lyon wishing you happy simming:-)

Mr. Calvert, believe it or not so far I've discovered security appears to be rather full, and I do have that paper work. I hoped an open post like this would solve my problem of contacting each team, but if I need to visit each ship, make it so.;-)

Well, I am not a Co/XO. But I think both the Arcadia, and Talon have open Sec spots. Join the Talon ::trys to take off the red shirt, and gets a bad shock::

Looks like *someone* is having New Ensign Syndrome.  I'll be sure to inform your chief medical officer, who will quickly treat you with the only known remedy (short of a newer ensign).  Although I cannot divulge the actual treatment, it does begin with a brighter, redder shirt.

LOL, your mean! Remeber red is command these days, might I recommend a nice yellow to match the modern uniform style?

The red shirt is a joke on the Talon. I cant say what it means, because the would, scare the new Ereins ::does an evil laugh::

There is talk about switching from the solid red shirt to a red and white bullseye on it.  Make it easier for targeting the fresh meat....  err...  ensigns.  :o

What, we've never seen a command-track ensign?  Red is perfectly acceptable in the modern era.  Although the yellow is more easily targettable....

Oh, and -- apropos of nothing in this topic -- I like the new avatar, Randy. :-)

It's okay it's okay, as long as he's not from Calvin Klein we can defeat him! (they're too powerful) i'll get the pocket protector, somebody get some dungerees, and someone else get a sombrero, we will de-sexify Randy

Webbie...

Might I suggest a page listing what ships have openings where such as:

Openings:

Security:

USS Blank

USS Olie

Medical:

USS Blah

OPS:

USS Klang

Helm:

USS Idontcare.

Mention it to Fred if ya would, Brian.  :o  If he is interested in maintaining such a page, it can be setup.

I just don't have access to all of his notes and such as he posts folks to ships and such to know what is open and what is not.

Well actually if the page were set up right, Fred wouldn't be needed as much. Since a cadet would graduate, Fred would issuse them a code to enter. They log onto the seperate page, see which ships sim at which times, then they see what posts are open. A quick little click, and Ensign away. Later if you want to, you can click your on ship XYZ, click on the other and the transfer is done boss:-)

Building a database of openings and such is a possibility.  Sure...

But again, someone would have to maintain that database.  How are those codes going to be managed?  How are they going to be generated?  When you input one of those codes, what happens then?  Does it automatically do everything, include make ya a cup of coffee?

Even the most automated system has to have someone maintain it.  :o

I am not the best person to do that.  That's why I suggested the best person I could think of to do do it should he be interested.

Thank you all for your suggestions.  Just so you know, there is a thread in the Community/Trek Chat forum for making suggestions to improve STSF.

oh yeah i once pitched the idea to fred about displaying the empty positions on the Aegis site but he gave me some pretty good reasons not to, ya know like people craving the post more then the mission and ship

So?  What's wrong with that?

So?  What's wrong with that?

Absolutely nothing is wrong with wanting a post. But, it's better to leave options open. Just like Randy's comment about updating databases, pages need to be updated. Say for example, a player joined Fred's sim thinking that the last ASEC post was open, as they saw on the webpage or in the database. Between the time they graduated and were assigned, someone else graduated and was assigned first, and got that post before the player did.

Now if a player had their heart set on the post, chances are they'd be let down, somewhat. A lot of people I know never let that get in the way of having a great time on the sim, but there are some people out there who end up being completely miserable, because they didn't get what they want. They become bored, and a lot of the time lose interest in simming on that ship. To them it's all about the post, and not about just simming to have fun, and contributing to the sim.

Where as, people who just want to play and want a post, but don't mind if they get the post they want or not... go and have fun with the plot and crew. Which usually leads to lasting longer on simulations, and also having an enjoyable time. The overall point is for everyone to have fun for in hopes, what turns out to be an extended period of time. It's about the sims, and enjoying yourself here. The post and rank really shouldn't matter. Overall there is nothing you really can't do as you are now, that you can do in the future. Be it at the same post you love, or at a different post.

Your character is your character no matter where it is posted on a sim. I encourage people to play it like that, instead of aiming for the choice posts and wanting the highest rank. You have more fun just playing that, and not worrying about who, what, when, and where, you are. If you have fun, and play chances are that it will happen anyway. It should be seen as more of a perk than a requirement to be willing to join a sim, on the players behalf.

Although, that's all just my opinion. You can always PM or Email the GMs of a sim to see what spots are open and to get information on simulations you might want to join. For now that is the availible option, until something better comes along. :o

That's what I have been doing Lighting. If I knew how to play Science, Medical, Engineering better I'd have opitions. However, when I play security I feel more passion for the role than if I was in another department. Since IRL, I know 10X more about security than I do for other departments. Just my two cents, and since I'm still seeking a ship, my two cents count;-)

I agree with Lyon.  I've been advanced sims as Helm, Ops, and CENG.  I like these positions, and suspect I would also like Tactical (assuming I didn't also have to double as Security).  But put me in as Science or Medical or Counselor and I wouldn't have the slightest idea what to do.

Hey there!

Again, thank you all for your feedback.  We'll keep it in mind as we plan updates and such to the site.  :)  It's ya'll that use the website that make it work.

While I'm here... I'll throw out a couple of my own personal ideas regarding simming.  These are not anything "official" or "professional", just my own perceptions and thought process.

a) Rank has never mattered to me.  In fact, the MOST fun I have with my characters come during their days as a lower rank.  That's when I get to develop their personality more.  I can have him get away with doing more stuff, etc.  Because the LtCdr who has been around for many years knows beter than to do something the CO/XO would hate...  but that new Ens or Jg might not...  and can often get away with it with little or no punishment.  =P

:o It's a good idea to explore and play posts you are not comfortable with.  Again, this is just my opinion, but if you are an expert in one particular area, what's the challenge in it?  :)  Branch out to other areas you are not so good at.  My own personal "favorite" area to play is in Engineering.  But I try to play positions in Medical and Science as well, just because I know it will help me as a role-player being able to be proficient in those situations and such.  It allows me to "grow" and "learn" as I go along, which I think is one of the reasons for role-playing.

Again, those were just my own personal ideas to help ya some other perspectives ya might not have considered.  Please don't take it as me shoving things down your throat, or trying to put your ideas down.  That was not the intention behind the post.

Lemme throw in my 5 cents. :o

When I was simming in the academy, I really didn't know what post I wanted. I was really looking more towards what ship I wanted, than the post. When I saw Reaent's open post in medical, I took advantage of it, and now, in almost every academy, I try to play other things, but...Because of my name, I get stuck as CMO. I look at that as a way to brush up on my medical skills, so one day, when I become Reaent's CMO, I'll be the best Medical Officer I can be!

Well in the Academy I took any post since I didn't feel like I actually had to write logs, so an indepth understanding of say Medical wasn't needed. On advanced sim, I need to know the department inside out. Now someone here said it gets boring, for me its not. Since with every new group of security officers I've worked with come new challenges, and new opportunities. Which I find quiet rewarding.
