“Paper Trail”

 

JoNs patiently waited for the comm signal to connect, drumming a claw on the desktop.

 

Eventually, the signal burst located a likely commercial satellite relay and connected her to the private terminal on Earth.

 

The flat screen on her desk flared to life, and the visage of a light skinned bed raggled human appeared. “Huh? Wha?”

 

She smirked. “Nice opening line you have there William. What if I had been a hot shot Grand Admiral?”

 

Senior Grade Lieutenant Rile, of Imperial Command Ops, blinked his sky blue eyes for a moment, and then realization finally dawned. “Mrrett. Woman, you give whole new meaning to the term ‘nocturnal’.”

 

JoNs in turn picked up the proverbial banter ball, falling easily into the old routine. “Well, you should remember that my witching hours are from midnight to three am; you’d be surprised at what can be accomplished in the wee hours of ship’s night.”

 

He raised an eyebrow and ran a hand through his mussed, dark brown hair. “Oh, I don’t doubt it. I take it that this is not a social call?”

 

“You are correct Lieutenant Rile.”

 

He switched gears, moving into business mode. “My usual fee?”

 

“Indeed – although I will be including a bonus as well.”

 

“No complaints here.” The human entered some numerical commands into a personal Padd. “So, what is the job?”

 

“Transfer of a Marine into Security – an internal ship transfer.”

 

Rile paused for a moment and gazed at JoNs over the comm feed. “Lateral transfers between security and the marines are a bit rare. It will take some fancy footwork, and I take it that is the reason for the bonus.”

 

Kansas let her silence answer the question.

 

The Lieutenant was already mentally formulating a transfer plan and the false digital trail of information, ranging from comm line and relay information to the biography of the admiral who “approved” the transfer, he would employ in case anyone attempted to track the specifics of the transfer. “Name?”

 

“Zimm, Conrad, Service number Z47-20.”

 

He busied himself calling up the man’s service record on the personal Padd. “Ah - got it. Zimm, Horatio Conrad. Call sign Silencer, rank is Second Lieutenant.

 

Kansas had twitched. “Hor-whatio?”

 

A hand suddenly whooshed into her data feed, playfully cuffing at her one ear. Rile enjoyed the spectacle for a few moments before crashing the party. “Well, can I at least meet the object of all this illegal paper trail maneuvering?”

 

Zimm popped into the data feed, smirking, easily holding the feline security chief off to one side. “Pleased to meet you.”

 

Kansas then managed to get the marine off her and reestablished herself back at the desk. “I’d also like to have him promoted to the rank of full Lieutenant and assigned to my alpha shift armory team.”

 

Rile took notes. “And, I assume you want all this done ASAP?”

 

She nodded her affirmation.

 

“Two weeks, the orders will go through.”

 

An unhealthy looking rictus smile spread across the felinoid’s features, exposing her fangs.
