still no one for the animated series... how odd.

TAS is pretty cool - but, like all the other Trek's, not everyone is going to deal very well with it. Putting aside the unique Filmation (anyone remember 1980's He-man and BraveStarr?) animated look of the 1970's TAS - the animated show does have a few things going for it:

1.) Gene Roddenberry produced (The Great Bird of the Galaxy).

2.) Original Series actors voicing their characters (generally cool).

3.) Veteran Trek writers (DC Fontana), A veteran Trek actor that penned an episode (Walter Koenig) and a future Trek author (Howard Weinstein) that penned a show.

4.) The series, for the most part, continued the nuances of what we loved about the original 60's series - while not Shakespearian here, and animated - it is nifty to watch.

5.) The show had CAITIANS! CAITIANS! MRESS! w00t!(I got a little excited on that one :P)

And, even though the eps had action, and ship battles, and characters jumping/rolling and firing phasers and such - the rate of animation (or presentation of the show, whatever you want to call it) is a bit slower, but it is really like watching an original series ep in animated form.

My personal take - TAS *should* be considered canon.

Apples and oranges - it's whatever you prefer.

For me it's Enterprise. I liked watching the Humans grow into the universe, starting as the upstart newbee with their weak warp engines to one of the founders of the Federation. It was also a new twist from all the other shows where the Fed ships were generally superior, where the NX class was just a class ahead of a Klingon garbage hauler.

And how about the aliens? Andorians are cool (pun intended). And what red-blooded man didn't enjoy the Orion slave girls? And the Vulcans, those arrogant SOB's. Enterprise showed them as not emotionless, but emotion-suppressed.

Well that's my rant.

TOS, without a doubt.

Why, you ask?

10) No Wesley (or other annoyingly angsty main-ish characters)

9) Kirk gets the babe every week. (Could explain why he wanted to stay in command of the Enterprise.)

8) McCoy/Spock argument about race every week.

7) Cheesy special effects (but they're so dated, they're lovable)

6) "I'm a doctor, not a ..."

5) At least one red shirt dies per episode, and Kirk doesn't angst about it.

4) Ricardo Montalban as a bad guy

3) Fairly successful spin off of 6.5 movies and five spin off series

2) Had to start somewhere

And the number one reason why I like TOS: Miniskirts, go go boots, Orion slave girls, and really hot alien babes.

As stated so eliquently before...TOS of course:: Snarkles:: :)

i would have to agree. while everything kansas said is valid, (for the most part), the part i found most utterly, -- how do i put this lightly, -- gag-reflex-inducing, was the animation.

maybe it is becuase i grew up in a time when cartoons were cartoons, (as in simpsons or duckman), and watching TAS 20 years after it came out on teletoon just made it seem like it was a cheaper, and thereby crappier, version of TOS.

despite all that though, i do agree that TAS should be considered canon because it was developed by the same people that created the other spinoffs etc.

And besides, the "kilt" really doesn't do it.

I did call the animation of TAS "unique" by the way. :)

Completely random comment - some of the modern 'toons on the air today? The animation is just really....bad.

That's why I only watch my collection of Cowboy Bebop (all six volumes) 801st TTS: Airbats, Area 88 (new version), Jubei-chan (all four volumes), Tenchi Muyo: Ryo-ohki (two volumes), and first season Ranma 1/2 anime DVDs when I feel like watching cartoons. Oh yeah, and Vampire Hunter D and Simpson's first season.

I voted TAS because of the Caitian M'ress. Also, some ideas used in later Trek series. The warp core, replicators, and even the holodeck first made appearances in the animated series. Plus, the stories were all very good. Yes, the Filmation anime sucked big time. But, all in all it wasn't too bad. And, it was a very special part of my childhood.

I enjoyed TNG and Enterprise. Never cared for DS9. It just didn't click with me. Voyager was okay but I was unable to watch it all that often. I vividly remember the animated series. The animation itself was disappointing but the stories were quite good. I liked it.

But TOS is and forever will be my favorite of all time. Granted, it didn't have the big budgets or the special effects we've become accustomed to these days. The sets, props, etc. were not as sophisticated as those in later versions of Trek. And those short skirts the female crew members wore were definitely impractical. But mini skirts were quite popular in the 60s. I doubt anyone gave them a second thought back them. I always considered those skirts a ploy to attract young, male viewers.

I really liked the story lines but it was the camaraderie of that crew that kept me watching. The verbal sparring between Spock and McCoy was priceless. I looked forward to that every week. My deepest thanks to the writers/actors and everyone else involved for developing those very special characters. They are responsible for launching a franchise that will live on for generations to come.

I think all the Trek shows used a bit of female eye candy. In another sim, I created a female of an alien race, and tongue in cheek invoked an official Starfleet rule that the most comely female on any given ship is required to wear a non-standard and revealing costume. When a rumor surfaced that Kes was leaving Voyager, I predicted she would be replaced by another young shapely female, and sure enough, one was assimilated into the cast. Yes, it is a ploy to attract young male viewers. And yes, I thought no more of the impractical Trek uniforms than the similarly short skirts worn by the girls in my high school. Wait. Perhaps, 'thought no more' isn't quite the right phrase... Anyway, these days female beach volleyball outfits draw hardly a blink. I don't know that the 60s were any more or less prudish than today.

TOS strong points... great chemistry between the three major characters -- Kirk, Spock and McCoy -- and a tendency to feature their strengths. The later Trek shows all had ensemble casts. It takes longer to develop characters and sell them to the audience. I think it was wise of TOS not to try.

But TOS gave lip service to non-violence and the Prime Directive, where Picard and company lived out the themes much better. TOS's aim was as much to make the Galaxy safe for the American Way as to boldly go where no man has gone before. I like the TNG themes and feel better.

Enterprise (my opinion, mind) went the non ensemble cast route, instead featuring the three main characters a la TOS - Archer, TPol, Tucker. Then followed in order by - Reed, Phlox, Hoshi, Mayweather.

You are speaking of cowboy diplomacy there Joy? One of the all time best lines in TNG (and a nod to TOS) - "Unification", where Spock turns around to Picard (who makes a derisive cowboy diplomacy remark) and basically says something to the effect of "I was practicing Cowboy diplomacy decades before you were born." You go on with your bad self Spock! Woo!

Whats that TOS/TNG joke?

A ship is attacked by hostile forces, blows up, and Picard turns to his senior officers and says "To the Ready Room. We must discuss this."

A ship is atacked by hostile forces, blows up, and Kirk turns to his officrs and says "Warp 5. Phasers ready. Fire!"

Can you continue this?

A ship is attacked by hostile forces, blows up, and Sisko turns to his officrs and says, "The Prophets!"

A ship is attacked by hostile forces, blows up, and Janeway turns to her officers and says "Did Tom take out a runabout without authorization again?"

A ship is attacked by hostile forces, blows up, and Archer turns to his officers and says "Malcolm, can we do that?"

Excellent A9, In an infinite universe with possibly infinite dimensions/time lines.

Anything is possible...just my opinion on the matter ;)

::high fives Kansas:: I always prefered the Captain who was willing to take the bull by the horns. ;)

I love Voyager and Enterprise, mainly because i love watching Archer always volunteering to kill himself, and to see how Janeway gets the crew stuck in even more trouble.

Janeway mentioned that Kirk and company would have been drummed out of Starfleet by the standards of her day. Of course, when it comes to the Temporal Prime Directive, she's no Saint.

The farther along into Voyager I get, the less I like Captain Janeway. Of course she's our hero against the Borg and that's cause for her promotion to Admiral. But she slowly sheds her ethical persona. I remember Admiral Necheyev giving Picard a rather scathing dose of salts herself. Captain Janeway becomes much more aggressive near the later half of the series and eventually starts breaking her own rules.

I'm not defending the character or anything (she is *just* a fictional character), but Janeway did and acted the way and how she did due to situations. VOY was the only crew to get catapulted from one sector to another - no Starfleet, no known factors, and they needed to make thier own way. I do like Janeway and the series.

The USS Agincourt's (Wed, 10PM) current plotline has the crew stuck in the Perseus Arm, also a few good years from home. Various issues that the crew has encountered caused them to delve into the "should we or shouldn't we?" ethics area, similiar to Voyager...although we haven't encountered a Temporal Directive thing...yet.

How about this question - would we as fans want to see any crew or Captain (either on the TV shows, or even simming wise) with no backbone? Or incapable of making decisions? Good or bad, or on the fence, at least various crews and Captains made a decision and stuck by it.

What you humans need is a television show about a Klingon crew. Now that's entertainment.

And we won't -- time travel gives me headaches just watching the show; planning it would drive me insane.

(I imagine I'll probably be forced to eat those words eventually, just because that's how life is, but for now, we'll remain firmly in 2397.)
