Marx Log SD 50705.08

Marx sat in the Security office, watching the retreating form of his stepsister walking out. He knew exactly how Hayden felt about the device currently sitting in a secured section of the torpedo bay. “Computer, open personal log, and classify the following section Secret/NOFORN/Eyes Only- Arcadia Command Staff.

“Hayden is concerned about our having a Weapon of Mass Destruction. And I, for one, don’t blame her. It’s a grave responsibility that we have to prevent the utilization of the graviton bomb, unless absolutely necessary. I personally hope that we never have that necessity ever happen.

“Dad was never one for war stories, but he kept his old Air Force awards in a shadow box in his office at home. He was an Air Force cop during the Eugenics War, assigned to Grand Forks AFB, in North Dakota, as an enlisted cop. During that war, special weapons were never used, except once. Intelligence pointed to Khan’s forces preparing to launch a nuclear device from Sydney. With the support of the Allied Nations, the United States launched a preemptive strike, obliterating the city. It was later determined that Khan used a double agent against the Allies to plant false intelligence.

“Everyone at the base, except for those not assigned directly to the missile wing, were sacked; but anyone associated with Grand Forks had that stigma attached to them throughout their careers.

“In that war, the Allies had the responsibility to use the power wisely. And they failed. We need to use the power we have with the graviton bomb wisely. And keep that information out of the hands of Section 31 and anyone else who would use that device irresponsibly.

“Computer, resume normal classification of the remainder of the log.” He took a sip of coffee before continuing. “Sergeant Keane has advised me that he and the mechanics assigned to my X-wing had to tear it down and rebuild almost entirely from the spaceframe up. New reactors, power couplers, communications and computer equipment, datalink capabilities all installed on the fighter. Of course, now that it’s been rebuilt, it’s time to flight test it to ensure that it’s spaceworthy.

“I’ll have to talk to Commander Lo’Ami about scheduling some time to flight test the bird while we’re in orbit. The peace and quiet should be quite worth it, after the past few missions we’ve had.

“End log.”
