Public Record

Maturin was born and raised on Earth in Cornwall, England. At the age of 19 he attended the University of Hampshire, and by 23 was accepted into Starfleet Academy. He studied there for one and a half years. However the news of the Dominion War was growing increasingly dire and sometime during his second year he resigned from the Academy.

Hearing of the need for enlisted grunts on the battlefield, Dox signed up with the Starfleet Marine Infantry Division as an Enlisted Triage Nurse and was assigned to the front lines of the Gamma Quadrant campaign. Dox served in 3 separate planet-based missions and 8 starship combat missions during his total 2 years in the war. His longest single mission was on the planet Andaman, a Dominion outpost in the Gamma Quadrant. His division was stranded on the planet for 4 months without re-supply from Starfleet. Of the 10,000 soldiers sent on that mission only 1,300 survived.

At the end of the conflict Dox returned to Starfleet Academy, which accepted him openly in light of the severe lack of recruits. He graduated with poor scores and no awards, quite a turn of performance from the overachieving Dox before the war. After a complete nervous breakdown prior to his first assignment he spent 3 months at the H. Shipman Mental Health Center and was ultimately found unfit for starship duty. He was then transferred to a private scientific research facility under the care of a retired Starfleet officer to evaluate his progress aboard the USS Relica. 5 years later he requested and was granted transfer to the USS Excalibur, his first starship assignment.

Left ulna compound facture (healed out of alignment)

Left fibia complete fracture (healed)

Right fibula compound fracture (healed out of alignment)

Severed left ring finger (no replacement)

Removal of right kidney (artificial replacement)

21 long scars on back

Third degree burns scars on left upper arm

Personal Relationships

During his military tour he met and dated one of the soldiers assigned to his unit, Claire Sampson. They dated for 2 months and she became pregnant. She did not inform her immediate superior of her condition and was assigned with Dox to the planet Andaman, which was to be a simple mission. She was killed four weeks into the conflict.

Andaman

The planet Andaman, relatively close to the wormhole in the Gamma Quadrant is recorded in history as the site of the Andaman Massacre. Over 10,000 Federation troops were sent to secure the planet and destroy a significant ketresel white production outpost located on its surface. Despite that their mission was initially successful and the plant was destroyed, intelligence underestimated the strength of the Dominion forces on the planet and they were quickly overwhelmed.

Starfleet and the Dominion, engaged in continuous battles over the region, would not permit either side to send in reinforcements or supplies, leaving the opposing troops on the ground alone. Due to the severe damage to the main facility and thus lack of power and supply warehouses, both sides were left with minimal resources to survive while continuing their assaults on each other.

After the majority of their force was wiped out, the remaining Federation troops soon resorted to raiding the Dominion outpost for food and medical supplies. During one such raid, Dox Maturin and his company were captured and imprisoned for two weeks. Dox, along with his colleagues, were quartered in separate chambers and brutally tortured for nearly a week without food or water, much for the frustrated amusement of the vorta commander stationed there. Dox escaped only by convincing the vorta that he had given up the will to live and after being untied without a Jem'Hadar escort, proceeded to strangle the vorta to death and sneak back to the camp, leaving his companions behind. Dox told his fellow officers that the others were dead.

After Starfleet was able to mount a rescue of its troops from Andaman, it was discovered that Dox's companions had in fact been alive and had been tortured for many more weeks after Dox's escape until they finally died of dehydration and anemia. It was quietly forgotten.

Only 1,300 troops left Andaman alive, while the Dominion lost 192 Jem'Hadar soldiers and 1 vorta. It is now a memorial.

Education

Graduated the University of Hampshire with a 3.92 GPA and honors in subspace science. Earned top grades at Starfleet Academy during his first year, placed in the upper 1% of his class. After returning to the academy after the war, Dox graduated ranked #398 out of 404 in his class with the lowest possible grades for completion. He earned no recommendations, commendations, or significant marks on his record.

Theology

Dox has adopted the cultural beliefs and practices of the delpi, and has been trained to control his emotions. True control is physiologically impossible for most humans, but he has been trained through meditation to achieve a limited management of them. This has helped him overcome his near psychosis due to prior trauma and experiences.

Psychological Profile

A quiet and reserved person, Dox was once outgoing before his experience in the war. The trauma that he endured during his tour, as well as the torture and subsequent murder of his captor has left deep emotional scars. After returning he became withdrawn from all friends, and without any family he had no one to turn to. Soon following graduation from the academy he suffered a complete psychotic break and was institutionalized for 3 months. Part of his psychosis was that he thought he could see and interact with his dead lover, still pregnant with his child. Once he was deemed stable, he was given a chance to serve on a science team in a civilian capacity under a mentor, one Vex Xiang, until he could be cleared for regular duty.

Alone and isolated, Dox found comfort in the teachings of his mentor and adopted a delpin way of life. This has impacted him greatly, but results in a conflict between his natural human emotions and his training to control them. It took 5 years for him to resolve his personal conflicts, but eventually he was declared fit for duty.

Dox drinks heavily and refuses to allow himself even the basic comforts in life. Perhaps having adapted to sleeping on rocks on the planet Andaman, Dox does not sleep on any beds and prefers to lie on the floor with no coverings or pillows. He keeps his surroundings sparse, removing any decorations that usually accompany a typical officer's quarters.
