Serious StarTrek.com technical question

I know I'm hardly the only person to have trouble with the chat rooms at StarTrek.com, but last night took the cake. I spent 55 minutes failing to get in -- tried going through AOL and IE; rebooted twice; cleared my cache who-knows-how-many times -- no dice.

I sent a note to [email protected] today, but all I got was an automated response. Moose said that it looked to him like the javascript was stalling before it could initiate the applet to create the room. so my next question is -- how do i fix or work around this?!?

as background: i'm running Windows XP with Office XP, and my ISP is AOL 8.0.

(it's absolutely impossible! to be effectively evil when your software turns against you.) any help and/or suggestions will be most gratefully accepted.

p.s. -- the file attached is a Word document with a screen shot showing the error message -- for whatever that's worth. Thanks!

Have you gotten the newest version of Java from Sun's website? http://java.sun.com . I'd recommend downloading the newest Java Virtual Machine, just to make sure.

HD is right about the java. I had to update to stop problems a while back. Also make sure to clear out your internet cache when you try the site again. AOL is awful about using and reloading cached pages.

Couldn't have said it better myself (in fact I didn't).

::chuckles::

And this coming from a guy that can't get into a simple java driven IRC chat room.

By the way, Hew, did you happen to get that problem fixed yet?

Hey there,

For those using AOL, I wouldn't suggest it. I have never used AOL's web browser, but been with the service since 1995. My suggestion? After you sign on, minimize AOL. Then start Internet Explorer and configure it to believe your running on a network. Works fine and eliminates so many problems...   :o

That's what I do naturally to take full advantage of the Full screen feature. I hate running a program within a program.

Heh... that wasn't my fault, Hawke. :o It was the provider of the service! (Urg... and a firewall problem, but that's been fixed. :))

What 'ya mean "did I get in"? Sheesh, Hawke.... I stopped in and visited your party you had a few weeks ago in the room!

Glad I was noticed..... LOL!

I use Mozilla, NS, or IE for browsing. Even on the occasions that I do use AOL.

After Tuesday I'll have broadband (w00t!) so I will probably use AOL even less. wink.gif

::snickers, teasing:: And stop breaking my signature! :o
