USS Excalibur

“Watching the Horses”

Duty is heavy as a mountain but

Death is lighter than a feather.

- Japanese Proverb

Left Ear JoNs had done something that she didn’t normally do – she had caved. The Caitian lieutenant had stopped by the medical bay to procure a cyanide pill. It was a no win situation all around; that attractive Caitian male doctor – Ensign Khal - not been on duty, and now all she had to show for the visit was an encapsulated death.

She and it were currently having a staring contest. It was just sitting there, on her bedside table, beckoning to take her life. The outer casing protecting the pill was such a benign, innocent looking color. Death in pill form - it was to be her way out if she was captured on this black ops mission that Excal security and Lt. Commander Teykier had been ordered to embark on by Corizon himself.

The tawny furred felinoid shifted postion on her bunk, crossing her legs and resting her paws on one ankle. She let her thoughts wander back to her tenure on the Gettysburg, and remembered that first introduction to black ops very well. Gods, she had been such a young midshipman, fresh from the academy and not even meriting a wet behind the ears title; she had been below wet behind the ears. No, no, make that beyond wet behind the ears.

Her training assignment on the Getty had turned out to have been anything but when the security contingent had been tapped by the CO to spearhead an unsanctioned raid on a low level Orion Syndicate cell uncovered by one of the ships patrol passes. Granted, her job during the op had amounted to nothing more then “watching the horses” like an outlaw in one of those western holo vids that her god kitten Mrrett had such a fondness for. Left Ear had been left behind to keep an eye on the shuttle while the remainder of the assault team did the dirty work. The operation had turned out to be nothing more then a milk run, the Orion gang members had been detained, and everything had worked itself out with Fleet Command regarding the captain taking matters into his own hands.

She sighed as her thoughts catapulted back into the here and now; she couldn’t keep avoiding thinking about it indefinitely. This upcoming security mission into Scorpiad territory was decidedly more serious and she was scared, and did not mind admitting this - to herself at least. It was wise to have your emotions sorted out before hand, so you wouldn’t encumber yourself with excess emotional baggage; it also helped that fear was a wonderful motivator with regard to reflexes and keeping oneself alive when all hell broke loose.

Left Ear’s gazed latched onto the cyanide pill case once again. Decision made. She hopped off her bunk and grabbed the case, walked purposely into the head, and flushed it down the toilet.

It was an officer’s duty to escape if captured, and she couldn’t damn well escape if she was stone cold dead.
