Creative Computer Names

I just this week purchased a MacBook after my formally trusty Dell Latitude D610 went to blue screen heaven. Having become fed up with Windows and noting that I can still run windows on a mac (should I be insane) I decided to go with the new Mac.

The computer asked for a name, and as usual, I just put my first name in. However, I have an external hard drive and it got me to thinking, do you give names to your computers and hard drives?

I used to have a friend who called his external hard drive Hal 9000. Other people have called their computer with names, giving them personalities that suit them.

Do you name your computers and if so, what and why?

Because I can? And it helps keep things organized for me at least. I generally name them after certain anime babes, although my cranky 3rd/4th generation 10GB iPod is named HAL9000 and my iPod Video is named SAL9000.

PC, C:, and sticks:

Ranma 1/2

PC: Kasumi

C: Ranma-onna

256MB Stick: Xian Pu (Shampoo)

I think I might have a Nabiki floating around somewhere as well. But never shall I name one "Akane" unless I desire to be hit with a mallet and fed toxic food.

External HDD: Mitaka (From 801st Airbats, because like her, she's also a crank at times)

Sony 1GB stick: Kitri (from the new Area 88)

What, no Sailor Moon?

Nope. Never could stand cutesy crap like that. Makes my nerves raw just hearing the main theme on any anime like that, and I'd rather not go into diabetic coma from all the sugary sweetness.

Most of my machines have unimaginative names. However, the one running Arcadia's website (an old Dell Inspiron 4000, Celeron III 600MHz, laptop with a broken battery and a scratch across the screen) has the local name "craptop."

I see what happens when the Chief Science officer gets drafted into the XOs spot.

At one point, the three machines in the house were "Tom", "Dick", and "Harry". Mine has been HAL on occasion. The current laptop is a rather uninspired "Toshi"

I'm surprised no one has mentioned "PITA" as a name yet.

Now that's just asking for trouble. At least HAL worked.... too well, one might say. PITA... meh. Computers need no encouragement in that regard!

My current computers name is...... "untitled"

When I got a new hard drive and was formatting it, I just never bothered to change it and it stuck for 3 years, heh.

I'd better start thinking of a name for my new Macbook that I'll be getting within the next few months. Maybe EMPU, which is, yes, another anime reference. If I was getting a big, powerful tower, I would call it the Wrath of Jobs.

Maybe I will call it Homework, so that when I go to grad school this year, I can say things like "Oh, I was working on Homework last night.." when was on my computer simming or chatting, hehe.

My own over built PC is known simply as the Mark II (Mark I was designed years ago when I finally got the cash to make a new PC, I went with a name I respected)

You could always name your computer "Deep Thought" - after the computer in the Hitchikers Guide that gave you the answer to life, the universe, and everything.

My computer is named "Prometheus". Can't really remember why.

Probably when I rebuild my Win2k tower into an Enterprise server.

all mine are objects in the solar system... the domain is aptly named universe, although that would indicate that i can use any object in the universe, but i limit it to the solar system because there is lots more stuff.

so far, i have mercury, saturn (my main compy cause i like saturn the best), triton, nereid, neptune, pluto, charon, jupiter (retired), titan. i think thats it. my servers are neptune and titan, and the rest are an assortment of 4 laptops and 2 desktops.

i think this mainly came from my love of space. could be why i joined stsf...

and yes, i know, i'm a geek. all this junk is hooked up to a gigabit switch/wireless router for just me and the little lady.

for suggestions, maybe compy 286, compy 386 or lappy 486. for more details search for strongbad. funniest thing i ever saw.

As stated in my lappy topic, the new lappy's description is Commander Kittens Toy, and I used SS Dark Fury for the domain/name after one of my Caitian mirror-verse ships. Gotta love the Evil Verse.

Two laptops in a row went 'poof' with the same mechanical problem, so my desktop (and out of seven computers, the only one that I can use to properly access the Internet) was dubbed 'The New Hope'.

My new laptop has Vista Ultimate (curses!!!) and with that dreamscapes extra that they so gallantly provided (the only reason I havent downgraded) I made an eight second looping clip of M-5 thinking, my laptop is named M1 though, seeing as Vista is a total failure, something about the engrams of a canankerous 70-year old didnt make for a good OS...

"Speedy" (Need to rename this one, not so speedy compared to the new Dell), "Pokey(Dell D500)", "E521" (New Dell), and the ever original "Laptop" (Old Compaq PII, still in service as a Spider Solitare laptop for my oldest).
