“Security Training Program New Praxis v1.2”

Written by: Lieutenants (jg) Spitfire and Nimetti, Lieutenant (sg) JoNs

Lieutenant JoNs jogged down the corridor, heading swiftly for the main holodeck and the scheduled security training session. The Caitian female activated the door sensors with a sweep of a paw and entered the holodeck, her gaze latching onto Lieutenants junior grade Spitfire and Nimetti.

Callack stood at the holodeck controls, entering the program parameters for the training exercise while Spitfire spoke quietly with the new recruits. After entering the necessary commands, Nimetti turned and nodded to his security chief, acknowledging her presence while Spitfire turned his head to look at both Nimetti and JoNs.

The senior grade lieutenant beckoned to her two senior line officers, sparing a quick glance at the two junior enlisted officers who stood at attention nearby.

Callack walked over to the senior officer and stood at attention, "Ma'am, training parameters are set." Spitfire then reported as well. "The recruits haven't given us any trouble....yet."

JoNs waved a paw, signaling that the both of them could stand down and relax. "I'd like to formally meet the provisional members of Wolf squad before we start the mayhem." She winked and then walked calmly over to the two newest promotions within the security department. She held a paw out, and the two males shook hands with her. "Harlone, Brotesh, just want to formally welcome you into your provisional training for Wolf Squad. Your squad leader, Zimm, had other duties to attend to, so you two are stuck with the cat for this training exercise.

From his vantage point behind Kansas, Spitfire glanced over at the two recruits and whispered to Nimetti, "Which training situation did you program?"

The security chief allowed a small smile to play at her muzzle as Spitfire did the ‘stage whisper’ – it was time to work on the provies a bit.

Niimetti’s answer was prompt. "The new program I developed after working with Marines at the academy. The chief approved of it a day or so ago," he whispered to the other junior grade lieutenant.

Brotesh was a Human, twenty five years old with a Petty Officer second class. Harlone was a Bolian, twenty three years old with a Crewman second class ranking. Both recruits had risen through the ranks quickly, and were very capable, which explained why they were both earmarked for a promotion into one of the security squads; the following tests would either go very well, or both the recruits would be blown out of the promotional waters.

Without taking her eyes off the provisional squad members, Kansas spoke deadpan. "Do we get to use the acid projectile pellets this time?"

”Yes, ma'am, and we get to use them against Klingon smugglers," Nimetti replied while increasing his southern drawl. "And that's only level 1," he added, fighting to keep a straight face. The country-bred officer pulled out his PADD, entered a few commands and then a table containing the op gear formed off to the left of the group of security personnel.

The tip of the Caitian’s tail was quivering with her own repressed fit of the giggles, but otherwise her facial expression remained serious. "Well then, onward to mayhem. Our objective will be to take a small Klingon outpost; our secondary objective is to download some computer information from said base…if we get that far. Brotesh, Harlone, you are team one. Nimetti and Spitfire will be functioning as team two, your backup. Work with them, watch for any signals, and happy hunting. I will be observing."

Spitfire looked at the two young recruits. "Good luck and try not to be reckless out there."

JoNs affixed an earpiece to her ear, encoding it to her comm badge. It would allow her to keep in contact with the teams or switch to private comm lines for individual chat. Lieutenant Spitfire ambled over to the equipment table and picked out a gear set. Both Brotesh and Harlone were trying to school their features, looking as if they weren’t excited as they began the preliminary check on the holodeck equipment. JoNs was pleased to note that both of the enlisted officers were quick and precise with the equipment check.

Callack leaned over to Kansas, whispering in her ear, "You get to try my new toy. I think it works."

He ‘thinks’ it works? Oh dear. JoNs glanced at Nimetti before choosing one of the regular issue phaser rifles from the table. "Thank you Mr. Nimetti, but I think you should have that privilege. I get dibs the next time though." She winked at the man. “And don’t shoot yourself in the foot. I don’t need the extra workers comp paperwork."

Callack smiled while picking up a basic phaser, accidentally shooting it - nearly missing his foot but close enough to look like a hit. Kansas merely leveled a long suffering look at Nimetti, while Spitfire spun around at the sound phaser of fire to look at Callack, "You ok?"

As he opened the case, pulling out what looked like an early 21 century M8 rifle, Nimetti glanced at the others, "I missed, don't worry."

Raising an annoyed whisker at the seemingly ancient weapon Nimetti insisted on using, as well as his sense of humor, but opting not to comment on any of that right that second, Kansas switched to the purpose at hand. "Alright people, let’s go."

As one, the group moved, the holodeck changing into a landscape of small to medium urban buildings of Klingon design. Several smaller outbuildings surrounded a main supply facility in the distance. Seabirds could be heard in the distance, and the tang of saltwater was on the air, suggesting the holodeck location was situated near an ocean

Callack walked in silence, waiting for orders, with Spitfire walking beside him. Spitfire armed his rifle as he whispered to Callack, "Are you going to be using that?" He looked unsurely at the rifle.

After clicking in a power pack, Callack replied, "Yeah. Don't worry, it's a phaser rifle. It's just modified." Signaling the conversation was over for the time being, the young Lieutenant j.g. moved to a position a few yards to the right of JoNs.

JoNs crouched down behind an outcropping of rock, surveying the distant Klingon base, while Harlone and Brotesh waited on the word to go from the senior officers. The group went silent in anticipation and JoNs held up four paw digits and then jabbed two digits toward the distant base, the signal for the two teams to start the training op.

Callack held his position as the two recruits moved past him, watching the area for any signs of Klingons. He moved to Spitfire's location and tapped him on his shoulder, the signal for ‘I’m right behind you’, then Spitfire started to move out about 8 meters to the right of the recruits and looked around for any enemies. Callack then fell in behind Spitfire, keeping a 5 foot distance between his teammate and himself.

Lieutenant Spitfire suddenly signaled the two teams to stop, pointing to something to the right of the group about 15 meters away.

Kansas herself moved to her left, getting out onto the perimeter and keeping a parallel course with both teams. Staying low to the ground and using the cover to her advantage, JoNs kept a sporadic running commentary over the comm link, speaking quietly into a private channel. "Brotesh, Harlone, always keep sight of your backup team if you can......" She would stay quiet at other times, letting their security training take over.

After fifteen minutes the teams had covertly closed the distance to the base, and JoNs suddenly caught sight of a blur in the distance, dropping to one knee and bringing her rifle to her shoulder. She sighted through the scope, locking onto one of the sniper guards. She didn’t fire, as that was the job of the teams to assess. More precisely, it was Brotesh and Harlone’s call to assess any threats and deal with them.

Spitfire looked into his phaser scope, looking at the heat signature and recognizing the shape of a Klingon point guard. He signaled the Bolian recruit to move in to make a kill.

Acknowledging the signal, the rookie moved and out started to swiftly close in on the objective, coming in behind the Klingon for a silent kill. Once close enough, Harlone raised his blade, poised for a lethal strike.

Kansas spoke into her comm, flicking over to the private channel to Spitfire and Nimetti. "Gents, hang back for a few klicks and don’t interfere; I want to see how the recruits handle themselves with this next interval."

The Klingon sniper that Kansas had spotted sighted down on Harlone.

As Harlone's blade struck, a disruptor bolt hit him square in the chest. Callack winced as he watched the new recruit go down, knowing instantly that he wouldn't have survived. JoNs watched the direct hit through her own sniper scope.

Brotesh moved to take cover behind a nearby building, aiming where the shot had come from. As he was running to take cover, Brotesh heard a click as he stepped down. Instantly realizing what that was, he had just enough time to get off one word through comms, "######!" before the plasma from the mine’s explosion engulfed him. Callack watched as an explosion and green plasma covered Brotesh, propelling him high into the air.

Kansas merely braced her rifle across a knee and placed her forehead wearily against the building she had been using for cover. "They both did well up until the snipe and the boom…”

”Computer, end program," Callack announced after the simulated deaths of the two recruits.

The Caitian rose onto her hind paws and called out, swiftly moving out from behind the building. "Computer, belay that - freeze program characters only. I want us to use them as reference points. Mr. Spitfire, have the recruits fall in."

Spitfire offered a casual salute and then bellowed. “Ok front and center!

Callack moved over to the other senior security officers, staying quiet and watching.

The senior lieutenant slung her rifle over a shoulder as she approached the group. She gave both Nimetti and Spitfire acknowledgment nods. "Well done as backup team, both of you," before turning her full attention to Brotesh and Harlone.

“Petty Officer Brotesh, Crewman Harlon, I saw some very good things during this op, right up until you got your collective butts blown to kingdom come and sniped. This was the preliminary test gentlemen, so in that regard you are lucky. You will have two more. I expect to see improvement. B-i-g t-i-m-e improvement, otherwise, you can kiss the promo to Wolf Squad good bye."

Brotesh, the bolder of the two, spoke up. “Permission to speak sir?”

“Granted.”

“Ma’am, the program parameters were changed.”

JoNs exchanged a knowing look with Nimetti and Spitfire. “Aye Petty Officer. We pulled a Kobyashi Maru on you.”

Brotesh and Harlone exchanged a look of consternation mingled with confusion.

Her tail swishing lazily, JoNs continued. “The holo logs showed that the both of you completed this exercise the other day, getting some last minute training in correct? Well, I authorized Mr. Nimetti and Mr. Spitfire to brainstorm and add a few extra incentives for today – namely, the extra sniper, and a few well placed mines.”

The Caitian’s gaze hardened a bit. “You both relied too much on what you thought the program would be, instead of living in the here and now and taking the real time situation as it developed and adapting on the fly. That’s something very important, especially if we want to survive here in the Perseus Arm. Savvy?”

Oh. My. Gods. She sounded like Lieutenant Commander Akagi Tamshioto from Tactical Ops 201 after the ch’Havran Holo Training Incident of 2388. Her class made assumptions similar to Brotesh and Harlone and had gotten themselves torn up during the training op. JoNs herself had been one of the unlucky few to step on said mine. What was that? Karma Kaboom?

Her thoughts flew back to the present, and she leveled a stare at the provy Wolves. It wasn’t even one of the more ‘scary evil feline’ looks, but after about fifteen seconds, Harlone spoke up. “Aye sir, we understand.”

The Caitian lieutenant then turned her attention back to her line officers. “Callack? Spitfire? Closing comments and or rants?”

"I have something." Callack turned to the two prospects. "Alright, I didn't like what I saw at the end so tomorrow morning report outside of holodeck 1 for some basic tactical training. That's if it's all right with the chief, of course. Other than that, I have nothing else, ma'am." He cocked his head in a questioning glance to his security chief.

Spitfire gave a short nod of agreement to his comrade’s assessment and then silently indicated that he had nothing to add.

Kansas as well nodded in agreement. “Then it appears that we are done here. Gentlemen, thank you for your time. Dismissed.”
