If you want to edit the signature that goes on the bottom of your posts, use the "My Controls" link on the top-right bar of the boards and click "edit signature."

If you want your chat display name changed, the setting is also in "My Controls."

If you want your login name changed, you have to send a board private message to the Webmaster.

Now I have another predicament. I love it in ENG, if there is something in trek I know it is warp flight. I would become a theoretical physicist if it weren’t for the math involved. But I have a problem with OOC knowledge. I’m quick in thought and can thing of fun/creative solutions and plot advances but I’m in a dertanium and dylitham prison. Any suggestions or should I look for posting elsewhere?

I have been known to have the opposite problem from OOC. When there are too many players doing too many things all over the ship, I sometimes can't keep up with everything. Thus, when Joy is on the bridge, and I know the CMO is down in sickbay operating on someone, I just skip over reading that line. If the player doesn't know what is going on, there is no temptation to apply the knowledge improperly.

There is a risk, though, that if you aren't reading what the CMO is saying, you might miss the Doctor leaving sickbay and going to the bridge, and starting to talk to Joy. You can't totally block out everything a character is saying without getting caught every once in a while. Still, it is easier to pretend not to know things than not to be able to read and assimilate everything fast enough.

But acting on OOC knowledge is often related to excess enthusiasm and a temptation to push one's character into the spotlight too much. Enthusiasm and participation are good things. They just can be over done. You just have to remember that you are one of X players in the game, so you shouldn't be solving every single problem, just the ones that are happening near you, or the ones you are directed to address.

Another thing you might want to lean towards is sharing problems. As a scientist, Joy often doesn't solve problems, but make ideas available for one of the departments to solve. At Ops, one might push a few buttons to activate some hardware to make a problem go away, or, depending on how much time is left in the sim, one might suggest that the engineers have to modify something to make something work. In short, look for opportunities to interact with other players, to share a problem, rather than seeking to make a problem go away instantly in a burst of technobabble. New players often have to learn to slow down a bit, to make problems last a bit longer, to learn how to work as a team. The host will have a limited number of problems to solve in any given run. If every player tries to solve every problem, all at once, with quick one line solutions, the host runs out of problems real quick.

So you might just want to slow down a bit and be patient. Being overly active is not unusual at first. It takes a bit to get used to the pace of the academy. Then you graduate, and learn that the pace is usually slower in the 'advanced' ships. The plots may play out over months, and are intended to keep a bunch of people busy over an extended length of time. Q like attempts to instantly fix things become awkward.

On the Republic a few weeks back, we had a 3 man scout team sneaking up on and observing a Cardassian / Jem Haddar base. There were one or two dozen bad guys. Our orders were to scout, pass back information, and wait for the assault teams to show up after dark. Admiral BluRox provided just enough nasty things happening to innocent prisoners (and also to imprisoned members of the Republic crew) that we had to consider the 3 of us storming in, badly outnumbered, in and attempting to save the day by ourselves. As a player, the temptation is to do something. If one wants any semblance of realism, doing something in that situation was suicidal. Sure, we spent the time making up stupid plans and talking ourselves out of executing them. But, no, we didn't launch our own stupid plot. We waited for Admiral BluRox to put her own... err... hmmm... wonderful plot into action. After a hot drop into the combat zone, she now gets to requisition a brand new yacht! She got to go on a parachute ride! Now wasn't it better to let the Admiral get shot at rather than getting shot up ourselves?

Anyway, just try to slow down and relax a bit.

Bob / Joy

I tend to just pay attention to whats going on in the room with me, if something very plot important is happening somewhere else (If Applicable) and anything that involves my name  Im vein like that.

More then often, you'll be fine like that. More then often, if someone is trying to get your attention they'll PM you or simply repost. Also don't be afraid to PM someone to ask them whats up. Don't be afraid to ask your GM's whats going on in the plot if you happen to forget something. They're here to make sure that everything goes smoothly and that we all have a good time for an hour, and they don't even charge!

Also remember that things are sometimes more hectic in an Academy then in an Advanced sim. This isn't a bad thing, everyone has to learn the ropes sometime. With dozens of new simmers running around trying to do their thing, its easy to get lost in the thick of it all. But don't forget that there are a lot of graduated players that enjoy a good hour of Academia bloodbath. So dont be afraid to ask around, and of course if theres something you really cant remember, there are always chat logs of all the Academies and Advanced Sims that go on around here.

And the most important rule: There are no stupid questions, only stupid answers. (And sometimes people) ^_^
