Vista and Getting into the Chatroom

28 posts in this topic

Ok, little problem here.

I upgraded to Windows Vista Home Premium Edition last week. Now, even though I have re-installed Java and all that, it still won't load the chatroom in IE 7.0 or Firefox. Anyone have any solutions to my problem??

I wouldn't touch Vista with a 10 foot pole [:-)], but you should check which version of Java is being used by your browser. From Firefox, type "about:plugins" in the Location bar. Also, see if you can load other Java applets correctly. This page has an example applet (it was one of the first results from a Google search).

Go back to XP until Microsoft fixes all the bugs in Vista?

So, basically you mean...don't install Vista, EVER!

It's something to do with Vista not playing nice with AddOnChat yet. I tried to use my friends TabletPC that has Vista and we couldn't get it do load the chatroom and we just ended up using XP.

There's a potential workaround here, and there are a number of similar threads in the tech support forums, eg here. I can't try it myself. Your mileage may vary.

If you don't want to mess up your system through a downgrade to XP and you don't have another machine, you can try booting with a Linux LiveCD (Knoppix, Ubuntu, Kubuntu or the like). Not sure what the Java support is like on any of the LiveCDs in particular, but I could check it out if you'd like.

Or you can simply partition your drive and run XP and Vista on the same system ;)

I was under the impression that we were talking about a Vista upgrade edition, in which case the XP license may be invalidated. There are some workarounds out there, but it looks like they require you to know about them before you install. If that's the case, it may not be possible to install a dual-boot. On the other hand, if the Vista disk is *not* an upgrade edition, the XP license should still be fine.

If you do go the dual boot (or downgrade) route, please read documentation/user reports about it before you do it. It could give you some ideas about pitfalls. (One that I can think of is that a new clean install of XP probably won't recognize Vista, and won't offer you the chance to dual boot, so you'll have to have a Vista boot disk handy to reinstall the Vista dual-boot manager).

After trying to assist a friend with her new laptop and Vista, I echo Will's sentiments. Vista should be hated by all with a burning passion.

Will not touch vista for at least 1-2 years to allow Micro Soft the opp. to work out the bugsheck,I have just upgraded to xp/pro from 98se/plus,and would not have done so if the oldos was still supported, and able to run properly with the comp.upgrade.

My new comp./upgrade is ready for vista when Vista is fixed ,and btw,get rid of IE 7.0,it isreceiving a lot of negative reports from a large amount of people, everyone cannot be wrong.... ;)

That is what most IT professionals recommend with any new Microsoft operating system, and it seems to be good advice.

I already know my current PC won't handle an upgrade to Vista but I usually don't bother with upgrades. I usually just get a new computer.

Would you believe my (old) company just started using 2000 about 3 years ago?

Well, if you're not planning on getting a new computer for a few years, you might as well just wait until Vienna comes out. ;)

Yeah, I don't upgrade, I just buy new computers. I'll probably buy a new computer in about a year after I (hopefully) get a job, so I'll go to Vista then.

Hell I only downloaded the new windows media player and now I can't play more than 4 songs without it getting all slow, choppy and unlistenable...if that's a word...why can't companies release stuff when they're done rather than when they get the menus looking spiffy?

Because people will buy the product anyway. :-)

The whole major-release model is being seriously challenged. In the commercial world, Apple has been releasing smaller, more incremental releases of Mac OS X. In the open source/free software world, people who want rock-solid stability (eg, for servers) tend to use operating system/application distributions that release on long cycles, but most developers and people running desktops update their systems component-by-component, instead of upgrading to whole new versions.

Not that Apple hasn't had its own fair share of problems, iPodNano anyone.

Honestly from what I, and my several friends who are developers have seen, Vista is a very nice system that just needs a few kinks worked out as far as compatibility goes.

A side note, I've heard very good things about IE7 and haven't had any trouble using the chatrooms with said IE7. Don't know any reason why to suggest not using it. ;)

Not to mention that it's nearly impossible to avoid downloading it if you want to get the urgent MS patches (such as the Daylight Savings Time fixes), gotta love how they jam it all together.

Really? I'm pretty sure you can just select which patches to apply if you press the "Custom Install" button. It's how I avoided installing the "Windows Genuine Advantage" spyware on a work machine.

As for what browser to use, IE7 is no worse than IE6, if that's the alternative. If the alternative is Firefox, Opera, Konqueror, Safari, etc., there's no compelling reason to switch back.

There are many patches that are dependant on others already being in place (I'm not saying that you need IE 7 for the DST patch, but Redmond has done things like this before). Also, many people - but maybe not many people in the forum, eh? - have it set for automatic updates, so they just get what MS feeds them.
