Hmmm... I wonder

I noticed that fairly routinely we have more guests then members view the boards, reading posts etc. I wonder if it wouldnt be a decent idea to have a post that is specifically written to assist them.

Perhpas most of you have done this kind of online sim' before, but I hadnt. I just kind of took a chance and got hooked. Perhaps it would be nice to make a post with some striking sample mission logs to show what they can be like.

True we have the mission logs posted from every sim, but they can be difficult to weed through and a guest could be lost. There are also some that are better then others, that would probably be what a guest new to sim'ing would be interested in seeing.

Just a thought.

This topic brings up a couple of good questions for those of you who just went through the beginner/academy/graduation process (or, even for those of you who just showed up here and haven't graduated yet):

What information did you want about the site or about the game?

Was that information easy to find?

If not, how did you (unsuccessfully) try to find what you were looking for?

Short of previous experience, if there were anything you wish you had been provided with when you first came in, what would it be?

I might also add: "What caught your eye about STSF?" and "How did you find us?"

I was looking for some superior turf-sod and mistyped the URL.

I stumbled onto STSF through Startrek.com, under the RPG section of the site. Once here, after a few months of lurking, I jumped in. I clicked on the Help and Rules sections, and the Moose tips, finding out what I needed. Between the information on the site, as well as information on the few ship sites, I was good to go. Granted, I had done pen and paper RPG's before, so I did have a "clue", even though this is live chat/writing based here.

Another huge help was GM Adm A9. I was a recent grad, and must have looked lost one night in the chat room, and he answered a few questions regarding the application process and what I was to do. My experiences are the GM's are very approachable with questions and such.

I think the site is pretty user friendly. :-)

How'd I get here? I won't bore you to tears with old war stories from the days of Starfleet Online, on AOL, but that's how long I've been here.

How'd I get here?

I'm still asking myself that along with: What am I still doing here? :D

Send an automated PM to all new registrants with info on how to find which thread to start them off. With a nice automated welcome note, and a memo to ask in the forums instead of replying via PM with the links to the topics/threads. Sticky the obvious 'beginner threads'. Like the Avatars thread. Repeat with Introduce yourself, etc...

If they don't see it in one place they will see it in another.

Meh. Whatever works out best. Merely suggestion.

I had another thought on this one, what about a mentor type of thing for lack of a better word.

True a majority of questions have been asked and answered usually many times, but it is a bit discouraging to get a reply to a question about searching the boards. That type of thing could make a person think twice about posting in the future, or sticking around.

Of course, Kansas is very right in saying that the board is very user friendly, Im suggesting more friendly users I guess.

Im not suggesting (or volunteering :-)) anything formal, more of a kind of if we see a new member someone make a personal contact besides on the board. Give them a friend right off. A less automated response than Tyana suggested before

I think something like that could work and allow people who have time to do it, maybe take some of the load off of the GM's for basic questions.

I dont know, just a thought.

With regard to mentoring - if a new person posts a "Hiya" topic, those fellow players that pop in the topic to respond are mentoring a bit correct? So, this is 'sorta' in place now. But, I get it Charles, something more 'permanent'.

Question is - and this is the same with the Acadamy availability topic (weekend times, earlier times, daytime) that comes up every four to six months - would anyone have that mentoring time to devote to new players coming in along with work, school, or family, and whatever sims or GM responsibilities they are already involved in?

Hey there,

I'll be generous and say the expression "I will be with you, always, even until the end of time" seems to apply. :D

Wow, the exact same thing goes for me, word for word. :D

Cool. :)

You are absolutely correct on both counts Kansas. I guess Im thinking, well first that 'mentoring' was a bad choice of words, and Im certainly not trying to be recalcitrant (<-- just had to put that in there :-)) by suggesting that the information isnt avaiable or fairly easy to find if someone tries on the board. I knew when I used the word the first time that I should have found a weaker synonym...

Perhaps I have actually already accomplished what I was trying to do in the first place. That being just to throw the thought out there, and really nothing more. Im pretty outgoing but some others may need a hand extended first is all.

Well, I did take a break for a few years, but the siren song of online simming was just too strong for me to give it up entirely.

I admit. I'm weak.

I thought I'd try out STSF for two weeks, and see if I liked it...and that was two and a half years ago. That song is a powerful one Will!

Worse than some of the recreational pharmaceuticals available on the street. Plus, STSF is legal!
