Wow, a topic twist from the off-handed humorous to the philosophical. The solution is simple, my fellow STSF players, colonies on the moon and Mars. I just watched the landing of the Phoenix on Mars. See for details: http://www.nasa.gov/mission_pages/phoenix/main/index.html

Hopefully, someone will be watching for this activity, instead of a Warp engine test. And then we will have a real first contact. Let's just keep our fingers crossed that it won't be Klingons, or Romulans, Tholians, Pandarians, or those pesky Catians and their dang furballs they cough up all over the place!

I do not cough up furballs all over the place; I merely enter into a hacking fit in a very demure and dignified cat-like manner.

::holds up a soggy ball of fur that looks like it came from Kansas:: Then maybe you really need to change brands of Cait food to something that might alleviate this problem. B) :P

Just read a news article on Comcast that is a bit .... different. A man was sentenced and hanged in the Australian city of Melbourne in 1922 due to the murder of a 12 year old girl. He has now been pardoned after 86 years due to testing that found the evidence against him was flawed.

Okay, way too little, way too late as a deadman sure isn't going to benefit from this. Unless the pardon was to relieve some historical baggage on his descendants (maybe any family in the area still catches flak after all these years for the crime).

Just a random comment: I understand, if this guy was innocent as the new evidence suggests, that's a horrible way to go to your grave. But 86 years later, why bother? If only ten years had passed, and the person was still living, yes, then go that extra mile to prove them innocent. 86 years?!

Like you stated above, I'm sure a large part of it was for the family's relief. You'd be suprised how long things like this stick with a family and affect them. I had an uncle who was murdered before I was born (so 20+ years ago) which was never solved, and its still a source of some sorrow around my family whenever the topic is brought up. So I know finding out what happened and why, would bring some closure, even after two decades.

Look at it from the family of the pardoned man. Could you imagine having to tell your kids some day that their grandpa or great-grandpa was executed for killing a twelve year old girl? Not exactly a glorious page in the family's history.

Sure, at the same time your stripping the victims family of the knowledge of who killed her, but I think it's important that the truth be told, whether it's a year, ten years or even a century after something like this has past. But things rarely come out shiney for both sides in a murder case.

But that's that humans are. Maybe we'll learn some day.

I envy all of you who only get upset about the heat when they have to travel to and from their car. I work outside in it all day.

So do I. It ain't fun dealing with heat casualties, or scrambling to standby for an evacuation order because a hospital's gone on to backup power, Brian.

I just got back from L.A. a couple days ago, where the weather was 80 degrees and no humidity. I come back here, and the heat and humidity hits me like a brick.

I also saw Quentin Tarantino at a CD/Movie store, and got Samuel L. Jackson's autograph in a comic book store.

I remember dealing with heat stroke victims when I was a volunteer firefighter. I empathize with your trials.
