Born the youngest son of four children to parents Sendai Toran (father) and Sendai Kyris (Mother) in Eralla Province. Both Sendai's parents worked at the College of the Celestial Temple, one of Eralla province's highly acclaimed universities. Toran, a professor of archeology, maintained a close bond with all his children. Kyris, an operations manager at CCT, maintained a more distant relationship with her children; the ordeals she faced during the Occupation had changed her. Though largely left alone by the Cardassians during the Occupation, the stigmata of being Collaborators was assigned to them because of it.

Riko grew up under the wing of his older brothers, often under their protection. A small child, and shy, he frequently had to endure much teasing and bullying from his peers when his brothers were not present. However, as timid as he seemed on the outside, he had a strong sense of self and a great deal of inner strength, and was never overly troubled. He was, however, a very quiet and reserved youth, bending to the rigorous demands of his schedule and the high expectations placed on him from others. By this time, the Occupation had ended, but of course Bajor still suffered.

Like all his family, he showed a keen intellect from a very early age, and indeed his first intelligence and aptitude test was scored in the top 5% percentile among Bajoran children. Placed in schools for the talented, he excelled even there, besting his classmates especially in the sciences. As he grew closer to adulthood, many expected him to attend CCT. However, Riko found himself yearning for Starfleet, and upon being eligible, applied. After breezing through his entrance exams and preparatory program, he was accepted into Starfleet Academy.

Riko's first year as a cadet was the major turning point in his life. Free for the first time from the pressures of living on Bajor, and the expectations that had come with his stellar achievements in primary and secondary schools, he found himself for the first time really able to explore himself inside and out.

After joining a racquetball club at the Academy, as well as the various rigorous demands of the physical training, Riko began to gain a little weight and muscle mass and definition. He knew that though he wouldn't be placed in physical combat situations regularly as a science officer, if such a situation should arise, he must be in the top possible physical form to survive.

Also, for the first time, Riko began to seek out people socially. He made friends slowly, but by the end of his first year at the Academy, he was a part of a crowd for the first time in his life, though he remained very quiet and thoughtful. During that year, also for the first time, he had his first romantic encounter, though no information is available about it, save that it ended by the end of the year.

Riko, meanwhile, entered his third year at the academy. He was well on his way to becoming a science officer, and eagerly plunged himself into his coursework and training. Also, he had become quite accomplished at racquetball, and had won the tournament. Now quite fit, Riko enjoyed the physical aspects of Academy training and looked forward to them.

Events, however, do not remain rosy for eternity, and Riko suffered a jarring blow at the end of his third year. During holographic simulation training, holodeck safeties malfunctioned, and when the simulated ship suffered major damage, many cadets were injured, including Riko. He suffered from forty various bone breaks, as well as a major concussion. After being treated at Starfleet Medical for two weeks, and much improvement, he was dealt an emotional blow: he was informed that his best friend, Engari Trilaso, a Trill third year student and his roommate, had died in the havoc of the simulation.

Having missed his third year exams in the hospital, he was forced to take a makeup examination during the summer after his release. The remainder of the summer he spent alone in an apartment in Oakland, mourning the loss of his friend.

The fourth and most difficult year of Academy training began, and Riko pressed on, still heavy of heart. As time wore on, grief began to lose its hold, but Riko was now quieter than ever, and somewhat removed from his other friends. It had also pushed him into a change of doctrines, and now he was in the security track. He had a lot of make-up work to do to have a chance at graduating on time, but his return to solitude assisted those endeavors.

Riko graduated from the Academy cum laude. He applied immediately for a posting and was assigned to the IKC Oob/Lakota.

His first major misfortune upon serving aboard the Qob came as he was somehow transported to an alternative universe where the Klingons had smooth foreheads, and were very nice and chipper, and thought pink was the best color in the whole world. Riko nearly lost his sanity in his time there, and was forced to take part in horrid rituals such as Jell-O™ wrestling; he also had to dance with both Bch sisters. Prior to his returning to his own universe, he was having to care for the male child of K'Walus' set of fraternal twins.
