How Clean is your desk?

32 posts in this topic

I'm in a computer lab at the moment, and the thought of cleanliness occurred to me. Every day scores of students use these computers. There are 42,000+ students on this campus, and I can guarantee you that not all of them are healthy. One look at the waiting room in the University Health Services building can assure you of that. That said, I can only imagine just how many and what sort of germs are on this mouse and keyboard. Would it really be that difficult to have someone from Housing go through during low traffic hours and give everything a quick wipedown with a Clorox wipe or something?

Even worse is the meteo department computers. Those things are never cleaned. You can tell by the visible layer of grime on the computer keys that can be wiped off with a little effort. Those machines are even worse than the regular labs.

There is something to be said for proper hygene and healthy practices on a campus this size.

Times like that it might be wise to carry a pair of latex gloves in your backpack. I work in a spa, so I am touching bodies all the time. I never wear gloves during a massage, however; I ALWAYS wear gloves during waxing and during the extraction phase of a facial - simply because there can be blood (true, miniscule amounts, but still ...) involved.

I think I agree that society has become a *bit* germaphobic. What ever happened to the five second rule? Sheesh nowadays everything is antimicrobial, antibacterial, an antiseptic or organic (and, yes, I know organic is not necessary germ free, I was just on a roll). I'm probably so full of preservatives that I'll live forever

You'll live forever and be healthy thanks to the antibiotics you eat every day with your meat...unless of course you catch one of those bugs that are already resistant to most antibiotics... or you catch a virus, or you have cancer caused by the preservatives or......

Well this topic really hit home for me today. When I went into work the cleaning lady was picking up dead flys off my desk and I said hello. She then told me that I should check out the candy I had stashed in my desk because they had caught 2 huge rats this morning. My mouth dropped to the floor but then I considered where I worked and thought how dirty that floor was. Needless to say I will not be hiding food in my desk anymore.

Oh totally. That's really never a great idea, no matter where you work; you just never know what sort of critters are lurking around.

Try carrying the candy with you to and from work? I have a little carry all canvas type bag that I stick the snacks, my lunch when I bring it, a book, notebook (the non PC kind - for logging on breaks - woo! ) and such in. We had a mouse/rat scare a few weeks back (someone had found that candy in her desk was open and nibbled), but nothing was ever caught or spotted by the exterminator.

I'm with you Dac. Society has become a bit to germaphobic. Being exposed to germs is a way of building up your immune system. Weight trainers are a prime example, they purposely create tears in their muscle by lifting heavier weights than they should so it'll grow back stronger.

Germs are the same way, you're exposed to stuff you're not used to and your immune system comes out stronger. We're not talking about getting cancer from a keyboard, we're talking about a possible cold.

My desk gets cleaned once a week. Otherwise, I call it "organized chaos." You know those pictures of stacks of papers at least 6 inches tall? I usually have one of those. It's scary.
