"Warm Dark"

He was alone in the science lab. A single monitor glowed brightly, displaying the current sensor data. It was the only active monitor in the room, and the overhead lights had been deactivated. Xiang floated in the dark, his eyes darting across the screen reading as much information as he could as it scrolled by.

Xiang blinked. Somehow, the darkness made him comfortable. His research was moving much more quickly that he had imagined it could.

He closed his eyes. The silence calmed him. It was nothing like the noisy and busy days aboard a typical Starship. The dark silence reminded him of his homeworld, exploring the caves and underwater cities of the Landwalkers.

The Delpin was overcome with a wave of joy, despite his emotional suppression...the thought of the warm purple waters of his homeworld made him relax....despite the battle that was going on around him.

Again, he had retreated into the safe confines of his own mind. He could remember the exact moment when his pain had become so great that only in the safe dark void of his subconcious could he survive. His sanity depended on it.

For some reason, this mission had charged his senses. There was something in the Badlands, or at least nearby, that brought a terrifying shock of fear to the Delpin. He could not describe it, or even identify it to himself...but he knew that he had to retreat, if only for a short moment, into the warmth of his mind.

Xiang clenched his eyes...he would survive the memories, and the pain.
