Ramson is right, there are no Europe based sims...at least there were none last time I checked. I think the reason for that is that recruiting players in Europe is not quite as easy as it seems. For one thing in many countries the internet is not as readily available to people as it is for people in the states. (Everyone might have internet access but it is expensive. Some still pay per hour or per MB so they would not 'waste' money on simming)

Another reason is the language issue. There are more than 20 languages spoken throughout Europe (only counting official languages of the different countries) and it is, by no means, normal that people are fluent in English. So recruiting Europeans would mostly mean trying to get some British players and the few who speak English well enough to participate in a sim. I know that's the reason why some of my friends haven't tried simming.

So, while I haven't changed my mind about the topic (I still think trying an Academy sim at a decent time for those who do not live in America) I am aware that the whole thing might not be very successful for various reasons.

Lepage brings up an interesting point here: Language (And I don't mean the bad kind). As a host, I'd be willing to try to have (if I could find a co-host) something on a Sunday afternoon at 5pm CT (6ET, 11 London), but.... I have to honestly wonder how many people we'd get to show up consistantly.

I agree with some of what Amnor has said about people showing up. It's all good and well for people to show up for the first few weeks but will we continue to get consistant numbers. I would still be interested in giving it ago if others are. I would be happy to co-host if need be.

I don't believe you can look at the guest counter on any given day and make a judgement from that. \

Hey there,

I do when you do it on a somewhat regular basis for four months. ;)

All hosts/GM's for STSF sims and academies are required to be members of the STSF hosting team. What does that mean for getting some GM's from other time zones? Basically, that they have met the requirements that we have set down for becoming a host and have passed our interview process as well. Some of these requirements include: Having been a member of STSF for at least 1 year, having held the rank of Lt. Commander for at least 6 months, and have to be at least 18 years of age.

So realistically, just finding someone with a ship to drop into to this is not realistic, as we aren't accepting new ships at this time, and they'd have to meet the qualifications just like every other GM applicant. GM applications are by invitation, and we do have a list of people that we are currently watching. If any of those happen to be in a European or Pacific timezone, then perhaps something could eventually happen, but remember out hosting teams are normally 2 people, trying to have 2 applying from the same may be some time off yet.

We are not going to bypass the requirements to bring someone in, just to fill a time slot. We are a group of friends and volunteers and not paid for this, we run when we are able, but honestly, most of us have to wok or have kids in school playing sports and things, so there are only so many hours a day that we are currently available to run games. Over time, as more players progress, I'm sure we'll get some GM's from other timezones, but it has to progress within the same rules and guidelines that other GM's had to go through to be approved.

From the Help Page. the official requirements:

They must be at least 18 years of age. They must hold the rank of Lieutenant Commander on an STSF sim for at least six months and have been an active member of the game during that time. More detailed information, as well as an application, can be found at

I think the International Sim is prima face a good idea, and something that council might want to explore more fully, but not something I see happening like, next tuesday. ;)

Waaaaaay off-shore

And it earns a terrific rate of interest, but only with the stipulation that you can't withdraw anything until 2314.

To get back on-topic, though - Would there be any value in a short series, similar to the "summer academy" that was run a couple years back? I suspect we could get a couple-three GMs to volunteer for that if it was on a weekend and a limited commitment. And yes, I'd put my money where my mouth is.

Drawback to that would be, there wouldn't be much time for word-of-mouth to get around. So it might not get much participation at first, where a permanent sim would become more widely known.

And significant penalty for early withdrawl, Colonel?

I'd do the invite for GM status (since I was once here as LCDR Marx, many moons ago(I remember when Dac was an ensign! :P )), but between all my other commitments, I barely have time to breath.

A9, what would be the policy for a GM who get's mobilized to go to Iraq or Afghanistan for awhile, anyway?

And to think it all started with A9 stealing my T-shirt idea.

Any chance we can also cross-link with the Scottish Target-Shooting Federation? I would say link with the Standard Type Services Framework (developed by Sun Microsystems) as well but it is no longer under active develoment.
