academies during the day

35 posts in this topic

hello everyone,

why isn't there academies during the day. if there were it would be faster graduations because of more practice and you don't have to wait until night. It would add something more to do and would give more activities. Just a suggestion so there's more active sims.

This is an easy topic to answer. The reason why there are no academies during the day is because we GMs simply don't have the time to devote ourselves to our GM duties 24 hours a day. Just like you, we have to work and/or go to school in the daytimes. Perhaps a daytime or weekend academy will come up in the future, but right now you've siimply got to make due with what you've got.

I've always wondered if that might change if we got a more international group; not that Canada and the Isles are international, but I'm talking about the other side of the world...

Another question is if you really have enough player interest for a sim in the middle of the day, too. You also need to have enough people to make a sim interesting.

Hey there,

Answer 1: I can personally attest that there currently doesn't seem to be a need for an Academy running GMT+12:00. On numerous occassions, while living in that timezone, I came into the rooms (and looked on the boards) and there was no activity.

Answer 2: I would not have a problem running an Academy during the day (believe most would agree), you would just have to match my current salary and benefits package. :D

How much do teachers make? Shouldn't be that hard to match.

Well, how many people are there who are not in North Amrica five...six maybe? So, my guess would be that there is no activity because it's no use looking at the boards during the day (for us) since there are no new posts.

I think if there were Academies during the day there might be more people joining us who are not living in the Sates or Canada. The problem is that there'd have to be more than one Academy and at least one sim to make it really interesting. The problem with that certainly would be that most GMs work or go to school so, it looks like we'll have to continue getting up early/staying up late.

While I think it'd be worth trying to run an Academy during the day I fear Fred and A-9 definitely have a point when they say it might prove that there is no real need for it.

Well one reason for the lack of activity at those times is because many people check out the boards only just before or after they sim and after they know the schedule they stick to those times. Newbies on the other hand might not even bother. Many times I've immediately clicked away from other RPG sites before posting even once on their boards because the scheduled games didn't match my freetime and I didn't see the point of trying to connect with a community I'd never be a part of. Claiming there's no call for alternate timezone sims is slightly off since this topic has been brought up over and over again and we have had foreign potential members coming, asking the question and then having to go away.

The only reason for these extra sims not existing that does make sense, the one about GM's not being available, is a bit of a catch 22. If we don't have sims for people in different timezones to train in, they can't ever become GM's and run the sims for the timezone. A terrible paradox. Its nobody's fault its just how the cookie crumbles.

I think that we have to start thinking about the future of STSF. Look at the Europe bunch already growing like Finn, Lepage and I. We're dedicated simmers but we do have to be up at around 3 or 4 in the morning. Hell, I don't mind doing that but a lot of people probably won't be turned on by the idea. Its too early to put extra-time sims into production but I don't think it could ever be too early for planning.

There's an idea. Meet Lepage and Finn in the Holodeck, a sim run by non-GM players who aim to destroy the universe. The crew would wear Lederhosen, eat baguette and belgian chocolate all day and we shouldn't forget the trailer in which we store the Prosciutto di Parma and we definitely need a Holodeck programme of Mallorca so that we can sometimes act like barbarians.

Don't forget the tea, espresso and Cappuccino as the only hot drinks from the replicators. With ale, laager, pilsners, stouts, various Irish whiskeys and Scotchs, and wines as the only cold drinks.

Euro-snobs. ;)

And I would add the Birmingham influence to the sim by wandering around the vessel drunk, dressed like Ozzy Osbourne and calling out "Sharon!"

I'd be the old disgruntled fogey of the sim! Just checked the joining dates!

Just so folks are clear, before we go too far down this path, we can't have a mid-afternoon STSF sim run by non-GMs. We tried this before - with having unofficial afternoon sims - and it led to all sorts of "Issues" (no, not the player) as people wanted to have Boards folders and unofficial titles, etc. It lead to a lot of confused players who mistook people in unofficial sims as people in connection with the forum in a official capacity.

Remember that most of the players you would probably get for an afternoon (U.S. time) sim will be US school-age players (who may be technically younger than allowed - our privacy policy states that STSF is not meant for those under the age of 13).

Bottom line, I'm not saying we need have a 2-year feasibility study on the idea, nor do we plunge ahead and start something in the next 2 weeks.

Thanks.

Well, I think the points been made, but I'll put my views in. GMs are required to be both 18 years of age, and hold the rank of LtCmdr on a ship for 6 months (may be a year, cant remember)

Unfortunetly, there are no non Americans (speaking the continent) that fill that role. As its been stated, most GM's have a day life that overrides STSF.

Until we have get some European GM's that can properly represent the forum at other times, the best that can probably be done are unofficial get-togethers.

Before anyone gets worried...it was a joke. I don't think it'd be a good idea to have a sim run by non-GMs. There are reasons why you need to fullfill certain requirements before hosting a sim and I find the current policy quite reasonable.

Also, the unofficial get togethers are a bit problematic. I know that there were some 'unofficial sims' before the academies when there were enough people waiting. Let's just say that I realised why GMs should be experienced players and older than 18.

Hey, I'm used to people not getting it even when the joke is really obvious. You must remember that I do live in Germany. The way we tell jokes here is a bit different. You have to warn people first: This is a joke. It is funny and you will laugh!

Well, and I think we've been over this a few times before, and I don't think anything I am going to say hasn't been said before, but meh. (And this is why bringing up old topics is so much fun ;) )

Essentially it comes down to the fact that I don't think there is really much interest in a day-time sim on any day but perhaps a Saturday or a Sunday, days that most of us GM's aren't available to play in.

At some point down the road, a day-sim for perhaps Europeans may become an option that Council explores in more detail. Which, I at least, trust int he Judgement of the council to do.
