NO! They can't cancel Stargate!!!

29 posts in this topic

According to a recent article I read on yahoo, the Sci-Fi channel has decided that this the 10th season will be the last for Stargate SG-1. I'm depressed. I'm bummed. I'm MAD! How can they do this to us?! :D

They did, however, report renewing Atlantis... but... it's just not the same.

Well, that stinks. I was never a huge fan of the show, but don't necessarily want to see it go off air (new episodes wise). Understanding about "Atlantis" as well - it may have "Stargate" in the title but, no, its not the same.

I dunno...I find SG-1 Kinda dull and uninteresting compared to Atlantis. Maybe its just cos I can't watch it without asking "where's Kurt Russel and James Spader?"

Cooper announced somewhere that they're doing something with SG-1. So there's still a possibility (very slim) that some other network will take it. Or they'll do a mini-series or movie. But if they do a movie to end it, they need to get O'niell back...

SG is in season 10. I mean really, how much more can they milk out of the show?

Robert C. Cooper himself said that since season six the writers have been writing "endings", and that they are all getting tired of writing endings. And I wouldn't blame them. It's incredibly difficult to keep on writing bigger and badder threats and then solving the problem realistically--the fact that SG-1 lasted 10 seasons is a testament not only to the excellent writing but to the depth of performance and commitment by its cast and crew.

I love Stargate SG-1 and will be sad to see it go, but I am not as outraged as I was over, say, the cancellation of Enterprise (which, as terrible as the writing was there, was definitely A Terrible Blow to the entire franchise). In this case it is the reverse; the Stargate franchise is going to continue blossoming for many years to come:

  • The producers and writers can now focus exclusively on Atlantis. Cooper has commented on how he enjoys it because everything is new again.
  • Perhaps this will motivate MGM to do a movie, television movie, mini-series, etc., if they could find a network.
  • Maybe someone will get their act together and produce a cool Stargate computer game (I have no clue if Stargate Alliance is ever coming out--the show website says yes but other places say no). Stargate Worlds looks interesting, but I am not an MMORPGer at heart.
  • At least the show will be spared jumping the shark (unless someone thinks it already has . . .). And by being informed now, the writers have the ability to create a truly fantastic series finale that will blow us away.

Of course, I would love to see SG-1 jump to another channel, provided that the channel could adequately carry the show. However, budget is a concern. I'd rather have this be SG-1's last season than see it silently freeze to death in season 11 due to budget cuts that limit the show's potential. :/

Ehh.. 10 seasons is a long enough run in my books. There's really only so much they can do for the show before it becomes uninteresting. (Look at the Simpsons for example).

Maybe The Sci-Fi Channel could use the open slot in their schedule to pick up Enterprise and give it a second shot.

While I think Sci-Fi would do "Enterprise" more justice, I don't see that happening. A) Because Paramount e.g. CBS will be reluctant to give up the rights to be the publisher of "their" franchise. :D The show sucked. {so says the Captain of Challenger} Unlike Farscape, which actually was decent. Maybe they could a Romulan War miniseries?

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

WHY??

Everytime I find a real neat Trek/Gate show I love and start watching religiously, they end it, and this goes all the way back to Voyager people. Voyager, Enterprise and now SG1. (I guess you can count Threshold in there as well.)

Ah well.. There's always the internet on to rewatch all the seasons, and BSG will be sticking around.....hope I didn't just jinx that.

Honestly, I think 10 seasons is far more than enough. After all they had Jack on for the 200th Episode, and as a Major General??????

Besides, who really wants a bookshelf full of SG1 dvd box sets?

Hey there,

It has been confirmed that Stargate SG-1 will not return on Sci-Fi for an 11th Season. However, that said, there are plans to do something. Reportedly, serious talks have been going on about a film. It is possible this is a leadup to that. In the same light, I'm not certain that we've seen the last of SG-1.

What is sad is that this was the first time in quite a few years all actors and the like were already signed for another season. Some complaints I've heard (and believe) about lower ratings deal with Sci-Fi itself. They've moved BSG, the show is now up against such things as Monk and they're even making things worse.

You realize the second half of the season for Stargate SG-1 and Stargate Atlantis won't be seen until March 2007? True...shows will go on their traditional "break" in September but won't return until after the entire season of Battlestar Galactica has been seen. Why? The network wants to have "original programming year round." With a setup like this, I think many of the shows are doomed to failure. When will new ones be on? When won't they?

Have to wait and see what happens. Sadly, I don't think the network has anything better to replace SG1...so...why cancel it?

I don't think they have anything better, but I'm sure the show was getting very costly. They have to pay the actors more as the seasons go on, and they probably spent a ton of money to get RDA back.

I'll miss it, but I'd be happy if they ended it with a movie. I think that would be the best really.

It only has one show "qualitywise" of replacing it, and that is Battlestar Galactica. But it seems to be locked into it's own timeslot supporting another show this October. "Caprica" I presume won't be ready until late 2007..and when it is available...I imagine they would team the two shows up together in one night.

It's a bummer to hear the cast was signed on for another season. But I am curious if they would of signed on if they had known Sci-Fi's scheduling plans?

Let's give Stargate Credit where credit is due...10 years is an incredible run for a Sci Fi show. Kudos to the team behind it.

Hey there,

All might not be lost. According to a report online today, MGM is indeed looking at it's options. On the other side of the coin, it seems that Sci-Fi Channel might have cancelled the show due to licensing fee increases by MGM. Essentially, it was costing them too much to show the thing. The fact ratings aren't in the top five nationwide didn't help...but were not the primary factor apparently.

Supposedly contracts between MGM and Sci-Fi Channel would prevent another network from showing SG-1. However, looks like one of several things could happen. First, MGM might lower it's fee and the network could reconsider. Second, specualtion is that MGM could turn it completely Internet based. This isn't out of the question...with people spending a few dollars to download each episode, they'd be making easily $4 million dollars per week just within the U.S. market. Third option is that they are looking to turn it into a series of television movies or something similiar.

Well, I just skimmed through these replies, because...well I did.

In first order of business, I've already horribly killed myself upon this news, and am communicating from beyond the grave.

Secondly, I do have to agree with Doggy Boy. SG-1 has long been my favorite Sci-Fi series, but Ten Seasons is indeed a long time. However, this mid season announcement does annoy me alot. I'd have liked the series to go at least till 11, so that there can be a proper set up for the end of the series, and to set up Atlantis well on their own. Seeing as right now, I invision something like this:

McKay> So...how's the SGC's fight against the Ori going?

Sheppard> They're still fighting...I guess.

Regardless of how SG-1 goes out, or what (or if) forms it continues in, I've taken it upon myself to celebrate the long runing series. Starting every sunday...or so, I'll be posting my favorite quotes from every eppisode from Season 2 on, (cause I never got season 1 on DVD).

Well, I've typed for long enough.

I dunno, a movie based on a series based on a movie...too much of a stretch?

Well, I always would have liked to see the two sequels to the Stargate Trillogy that Roland Emmerich had envisioned.

Kurt Russel in a straight up action movie again...I like. Unlike Harrison Ford I think he's still got a pair of stones.

Argh, I cant find the names of the books, but theres a series out there that followed up on the movies as well, staying more in tune with what took place during the movie. It follows O'Neill's team and the Abydonians after the fallout of Ra's death.
