Security Log, SD 50608.03

Security Log, SD 50608.03, Lt Marx recording.

I’m not in the position of Chief of Security a full day, and already I have two guests sitting in the brig: Ensign Ryan Trenton and Ensign Naara Chendral. Both are charged with sabotage during our test of the new warp drive. Note to Colonel Quest: Lt. Swan acted admirably, and in the finest traditions of both the Marine Corps and the Security Directorate in keeping a tense situation from exploding out of proportion, while Security personnel were busy with damage control and medical evacuation missions within the ship.

From what both Lt. Brighton and Commander Light reported, Ens. Trenton has this readily apparent disgust for Ens. Chendral. To prevent any further taunting or harassment, and to keep my personnel from wanting to space either of them for piece and quiet, I have placed the two in cells at opposite ends of the cellblock. LCDR Light has also requested that I keep Engineering appraised of our investigations. Not so cut and dried as when Dad was an Air Force cop, three hundred years ago. Sensor logs can be altered, telltale data footprints can be erased, and even fingerprints are unreliable. I think I may have to turn a couple of cells into good, old fashioned interrogation rooms—complete with steel table bolted to the deck, and an uncomfortable steel chair. Someone will definitely crack under those conditions. Of course, I’ve also been thinking about redoing the brig anyway. It’s too spartan down here. I was thinking about resurfacing the bulkheads with a lovely rock face, and change the security barriers to old fashioned wooden doors with a barred grate in them—leaving, of course, the security forcefields fully operational.

I have yet to meet our newest member of Security—Ensign Thoros—but I’m sure he’s about as competent as they come from the Academy.

These are my first standing orders as Chief of Security: Unless otherwise noted, prisoners will have full access to visitors, including, at the consent of the Captain and Chief Medical Officer, conjugal visits. All prisoners will have some form of legal representation, pursuant to SJMC Articles, and will have legal protection under SJMC Article 31- Rights against Self Incrimination. All prisoners will be advised of their rights, pursuant to Starfleet JAG regulations:

“I am, (state name and rank), a member of the USS Arcadia’s Security detail. You are under apprehension for the following offenses: (state known offenses). I advise you, under Article 31, SJMC, that you have the right to remain silent, that is say nothing at all. Any statements you make, oral or written, may be used as evidence against you in trial by court-martial or other judicial or non-judicial proceedings. You have the right to speak with a member of Starfleet JAG, free of charge. You can also speak to a civilian attorney, at your own cost.

“Do you understand your rights? Are you willing to answer questions? Do you with to speak to legal representation?”

Additionally, I will suggest to LTC Quest that the Marine detachment be duly deputized, to provide additional manpower during noncombat operations. This, I hope, will smooth over tensions between the Marines and Security during His Lord High Grand Poobahness’s tenure as Chief of Security.

Signed,

William J, Marx, LT(sg)

Chief of Security

USS Arcadia, NCC-1742-E
