A Run in with Lt Cmdr BobO Part II

"A run in with Lt Cmdr BobO"

Part II "The funky smell of differences"

A log by Lt Jg David Johnson

David sat on a container next to one of the shuttlecraft in the shuttle-bay a tricorder in his left hand, an engineer's kit in his left and a very annoyed and frustrated expression on his face. For the past 10 minutes he had been scanning the shuttlecraft for what Lt Cmdr BobO had called a, "funky," smell. Because was merely a Lt Jg he did not want to disobey orders nor did he want to make enemies with Lt Cmdr BobO though it seemed he had already failed at the latter despite the fact that he hadn’t said more than a few sentences to him. As he sat there David wondered how he would deal with the differences between him and the Lt Cmdr. So far his tenure on the Republic had been anything but ordinary. He had shot a superior officer, gotten thrown in the brig, found eggs containing vicious ducks and he now had had two interactions with Lt Cmdr BobO. He had gotten past the shooting incident and his brig time and though he had opened the container with the killer duck eggs he knew that it was not his fault. Yet, despite two attempts at making conversation it seemed that not only had Lt Cmdr BobO developed a dislike of David, but he now seemed to want nothing more than to assign him to tasks that we're demeaning, especially for a Starfleet officer. David had done every task given to him by Lt Cmdr BobO without question. Everything from degaussing the holodeck's when Lt Cmdr Jax had told BobO that they we're off limits, to climbing inside the impulse manifold chamber in order to cool it off. But this time, David felt that Lt Cmdr BobO had gone too far. The job he had been given was obviously just an excuse to get David out of engineering where he knew there was real work to be done. He had requested a meeting with Lt Cmdr Jax in order to discuss the matter but he knew that she was very busy as she had hurried him out of the cargo bay shortly after the discovery of the duck eggs. It would be a while before they would be able to meet and in the meantime David pondered what he could do. How he could communicate his feelings to Lt Cmdr BobO. That he felt subjugated, harassed and that BobO had treated him in a manner unbecoming a Starfleet officer. David thought that perhaps confronting him directly was the best approach; it might show that he had gumption, and would send a message to BobO that he wasn't a pushover. Then again, that move might land him in the brig…again. There were many things he could do, and many more that he would do given different circumstances including telling BobO to his face that he was a jerk and demand that he stop treating him in the manner that he had been. But David knew that doing that would probably land him in the brig…with a black eye or a broken nose. No, there was only one thing to do before meeting with Lt Cmdr Jax. He needed to find a way to bridge the gap between him and his superior, he needed to deal with the differences between the two because if he didn't they would never be able to work together which David knew might mean the difference between saving the ship and everyone getting killed, should the situation arise. He was a Starfleet officer and he needed to act that way while at the same time making it clear that he shouldn't be disrespected in the way BobO was disrespecting him just because he found him to be, "annoying." David now thought he knew what he had to do, but it was the end of his shift and before talking with BobO, he would head for Ten Forward for a drink and some more thought. With that he got up and left the shuttle bay and whatever, "funky," smell there may have been in there. He had a bigger smell to take care of, the "funky," smell of differences between him and Lt Cmdr BobO
