Apparently it is going to be about a young Kirk and Spock...

i hope the "young kirk and spock" movie writers haven't gotten any ideas from a certain table at the shoreleave convention...

Wow, that's quite a poster.

:: considers spot on wall where one would look lovely ::

It's an intriguing concept for a Trek movie, let's hope they don't screw it up.

Rumor is that Matt Damon is playing Kirk but it all depends on when the new Bourne movie shoots.

I think it would look better with a nice big red S on the front, instead of the yellow communicator...

Woo! Now THAT is a great looking classic symbol in all its glory! Classic Trek - always the first, always the best, always the pioneer.

Matt Damon as Capt. Kirk hmm? ...I can handle that.

Pandering to the TOS fans isn't going to draw in the massive amounts of TNG regulars who weren't obsessive nerds or compulsive weenies to begin with. Example: Enterprise. But who knows, maybe this limited vision of relying on sex, violence, machismo, and one dimensional characters will appeal to the Fox News/World Wrestling Federation/NASCAR type crowd. Sorry, the Shatner Ego/Spike TV mentality just doesn't fly with us. We've already seen episodes of Star Trek cadets sowing their oats. Good Luck.

::cough, cough::

Kansas, should we lynch him? Figurativly speaking, of course...

Some of us are quite fond of TOS, and don't fit your description. By "us" you assume that a vast majority agree with you, which I'm sure they do, but you're speaking for a lot of people.

Personally I found the original movies hugely more entertaining than most of the TNG movies (becuase there's only a couple of TNG movies I really liked at all). I'm not saying I have high hopes for this movie, but I am saying some people like TOS and are looking forward to this movie, regardless of what TNG regulars think. Nemesis was a flop, and the only TNG movie people talk about is First Contact.

While I don't have high hopes for this movie, I don't think that it's a bad idea.

Yeah, personally I have to agree. Sure, I love Picard and them, but the TNG Movies never really held any weight against the original TOS ones. The TOS movies as a whole were alot more interesting to watch than the latest TNG offerings. Especially after Nemesis. They never should have made that one. Then again.. it does make for a nice coaster for my drink :P As for the new movie, it is an interesting format. But.. after the last few Trek movies, my hopes aren't exactly too high.

I say have a good, old-fashioned lynching.

The reason why Enterprise was a flop was it moved away from Roddenberry's vision of the future to Rick Berman's darker, more sinister version of the future. B5, for example, had a dark core around the third season, but eventually returned to "the shining beacon in the night".

And honestly, how many times can the various crews of the Enterprise save Earth anyway? You'd think Starfleet consisted of only one ship.

Well, TOS spawned 3 movies that are universally accepted as "good" - The Wrath of Kahn, The Voyage Home, and The Undiscovered Country. The only TNG movie that was universally accepted as "good" was First Contact. Granted many people consider this to be the best Trek movie ever but still you would think that with larger budgets and better effects they should have done better.

Which makes TOS batting .500, while TNG's only batting .250.

As for the best Trek Movie, for me it's Wrath of Kahn. The special effects in it are just amazing, especially for 1982. And it tied up a loose end from Space Seed. "What happened to Kahn?"

I would have to agree, Kahn was my favorite. I enjoyed TOS very much as well, just something about it works for me. However, I think that Trek needs to take a step back and reinvent itself. I enjoyed ENT, to a point, but I think it was played at the "First Humans in a harsh and bleek galaxy".

While the premise of the show was fine, I think spirit of Trek was lost somewhere within. Personally, I dont know if we'll ever go back to that campy style of TOS, maybe its for the best, maybe its not.

I think its fair to say Trek isn't the same without Rodenberry. Some of us can enjoy the changes, some not. I've lost some faith in the system, after the last two TNG movies, so I dont hold many hopes for this one either.

All I can see is the ruination of two decent Trek characters.

The problem with Enterprise, in my view, was that it was a UPN show. Having to mold the show for the network and trying to maintain the ratings forced the show to veer away from the real Trek ideal. If there is ever another Trek series, it should be syndicated, like TNG and DS9 were.

I'll take campy TOS over gloomy DS9.

::looks up from getting the rope ready:: I'm sorry what was everyone saying?

I admit it flat out - I am happy about this upcoming movie IF the whole process moves forward; 2008 is a long time away.

Why am I happy? Reasons: (and these are in no way meant to be snarky - its hard to not sound snarky when typing sometimes. :P )

1.) It will center on TOS (well, duh) and give me "campy" anyday. It sure wont be campy if it gets the modern special effects and CGI treatment.

2.) I like Matt Damon. He is a solid actor, and he *is* Jason Bourne, and why the heck not ask him to headline as Captain Kirk?

3.) I admit, I'm tired of the debate over who gets to go next for the Trek films. TNG is done. DS9, VOY, ENT - not going to happen. Out of all them, TOS pioneered the movies and TNG picked up the slack as the most popular sequel. In other words Next Gen was in the right place at the right time. I say "Go For It" and produce a movie about the TOS era. The movies we saw with the original cast were set after the series remember, with the characters older. I think its great that a movie will be set during the "bright velour uniform era" with some younger characters because it hasn't been done before in the movies. Why not go for it and reinvent TOS a little bit? I'm not worried because I will always consider this "new TOS" to be different from the "original TOS" even though Kirk and Spock are a focus. It's all good.

4.) I am a Trek fan. I will try anything Trek once. Bring it on I say, open mind, and woo hoo!

5.) Where the heck's McCoy?

6.) A Constitution class ship on the big screen...woo hah!

7.) Original series phaser and flippy communicator. Enough said. No tapping on some little small badge stuck on your chest to communicate, and a phaser that looks like a phaser. Not one of those elongated versions that looks like one big stick.

8.) Where the heck's McCoy? :D

9.) That constitution class bridge sure looks good.

10.) Just plain happy.

Um, Kansas, the original Enterprise from the first three movies is still considered a Constitution-class ship. Now, the original design on the big screen...WOO HOO!

Oops. Okay, I meant the original Constitution design, rather then the Constitution refit design.
