Let The Little Sacrifices Be Remembered

Ensign Ramson stepped into Excalibur's main engineering, the place abuzz with activity. The urgency of the preparations was evident as each officer and crewman moved quickly and diligently about their jobs. Moving herself with all due speed she came up to Commander Xavier. "Sir," pausing for a moment for him to acknowledge her presence, "Here is a manifest of all fighter equipment and parts that have just been brought onboard."

 

Still half giving orders to those around him Crispin took the PADD into hand. There seemed to be a slight frown on his face as he looked over the list. "Hmmm. If this is the best we can do for now, so be it. Let's go take a look where we should start to butcher my original designs." He said with a smirk. After a quick motion for Crewman DeSanto to take his place the Chief Engineer moved towards the nearest turbolift.

 

Kallah followed closely behind. "I understand this isn't how you wanted to unveil your project."

 

Xavier simply hummed a displeased sound, more polite than a grunt but with a similar tone as one. "Cargo bay one." He finally spoke to the turbolift.

 

Waiting for the doors to close, "This should though prove the feasibility of the technology." She could tell that didn't comfort him much, She could tell that even if she wasn't a telepath. Commander Xavier remained motionless with his eyes fixed on the turbo lift doors.

 

"I have worked long and hard on this project, every aspect of it. It was difficult enough coming to the realization I needed to bring in outside help." He glanced back at the Ensign. "To have it suddenly altered beyond my control is..." He let the sentence die there. He was too well trained of an officer to let personal emotions effect given orders, but the emotions were there.

 

"Sir, have you ever heard of an ancient Earth vehicle called a JEEP?"

 

Xavier blinked oddly at the Ensign. "Aah, yes." He thought back to his escape from Nazi Germany. He had killed an American soldier and had taken the Jeep and drove across Europe to hide in Spain. The memory was not pleasant as he had reformed from the murderous Juhdia, he was. Or had he?

 

There was an odd emotion she suddenly felt from him, one she couldn't quite understand without a more inappropriate search of his mind. Shaking it off she continued. "It was developed by a small company during a desperate world wide war on Earth. It was exactly what the military needed. Unfortunately, the company that invented it was too small to make enough to meet demand. The whole design was given to another company to build. It ended up making a fortune for them and probably was pivotal in the final victory."

 

"I think you just made me fell worse, Ensign."

 

Smiling as sweetly as she could. "I understand. But they won the war. That little company with an idea won the war. Few people in the galaxy may have ever heard of the American Bantam company, but they changed the galaxy. And, at least one person... on the other side of that galaxy.... some 500 years later knows what they did. Isn't that enough?"

 

With that the doors to the turbolift opened and Kallah Ramson stepped out and down towards the cargo bay. Crispin pondered for a few moments. He still wasn't happy. But... he knew what needed to be done. And he would do it, too
