"Fresh Set of Downs"

“Fresh Set of Downs”

In order to play football, you have to know the rules. The same is true when in the position of Starfleet Captain. In order to be in Command, you have to know how the game is play. Every job contains some elements of politics. No job is completely devoid of it. There is always a system, some way of doing something, things that will help you get ahead and things that will set you back.

Captain Davies didn’t get to his position by refusing to participate in the political game known as Starfleet. He knew, like most aspiring officers, that in order to taste the promised land, he had to play the game, and play it well. Why, then, would he start doubting his ability to play the game? Was the prospect of failure really greater than his experience could counter?

Davies inwardly lamented his conversation with Colonel Harper, though she had helped him realize that he was no shabby officer. He was shrewder than anyone probably realized. All it takes is a little reminder once in awhile of how far you’ve come, rather than focusing on how far you have to go.

In football terms, Davies had just begun the second half, and he had overcome adversity and built a decent lead. It was up to him whether he would fight to keep it. Backup quarterbacks wait in the wings like wolves, but they cannot enter the playing field until the starter proves he is nothing more than a sheep, in wolf’s clothing.

Davies felt relieved. “Sometimes all it takes is a fresh set of downs”
