Any soccer fans out there? I don't image there's many from the Americans here, but there is a large contingient of International users here, so there's hope. :) So, who do you think will win this years World Cup which started today and goes until the 9th of July. Will it be the Brazilian powerhouse once again repeating and winning their sixth championship, or can Germany win at home again just as they did the last time they hosted in 1974? Should be an interesting month.

As for me, since Canada's not in the World Cup again, my heart goes out for Argentina, since my mom's side lived there for many years. With players like Lionel Messi, Carlos Teves, and Juan Roman Riquelme, they might go far. But the logical side of me says Brazil, so that's what I pick.

I voted other...

USA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

lol, there are American soccer fans out there. just gotta know where to look :)

Well, i voted other (USA) just cause i felt like it. Logically, I'd have to choose something else, cause though USA will probably go far, maybe not far enough. I'd say Brazil. Another choice is Germany, but (no offense to germans) I just don't like the German national team.

Soccer...the only sport where 1-0 is a blowout.

Latest Results:

Group A

Germany vs Costa Rica 4:2

Poland vs Ecuador 0:2

Being German I probably ought to say Germany will win. They do have a small chance and one should never underestimate the advantage of playing at home but still... too many inexperienced players and a defense that doesn't really deserve that name. (Though Lahm made a great game last night)

England: We'll have to see how Owen plays and if Crouch can live up to the expectations. They have a great midfield with Gerrard, Lampard and Beckham. They would deserve to get far BUT my guess is that Germany will come second in group A and England will come first in Group B. That means they'll play eachother. Draw after overtime and Germany wins the shootout, as always. England just can't win.

France: They just don't have the quality of '98 or '02 anymore. All their really good players ended their careers and those who are still playing are getting too old. The only exception is Henry.

Czech Republic: Interesting team. They already surprised us in Portugal. It's hard to make a prediction. They might get far.

Netherlands: You're not serious, are you? They have great potential but they just never perform well in big tournaments. (Did you see their game last week vs Australia??? ::chuckles:: )

Spain: No way! They have some decent players but their problem is that they have a very strong league in which young players have a really hard time. My guess is that we'll see some good games but they won't get farther than the quarter finals.

Italy: Great defense and the rest of the team is really good, too. The problem is that they don't score. If they win they usually score one, sometimes two goals. Since we're talking World Cup here I'd say it won't be enough. Against teams like Brazil you have to be able to score more goals. My guess is they get eliminated by shootout after a 0:0 draw. Just like England Italy can't win shootouts.

Brazil: Definitely capable of winning the cup. They don't really have a weakness and to beat you'd have to have a really good day while they have a bad one. They are always good to score a few goals and their defense is strong, too. (I'm not too sure 'bout Juan, though.) One of the problems might be that they may underestimate other teams. But my guess is they'll make it again this year.

Living in Dallas, for the next week there is no sport on the planet besides basketball. Go Mavs!

Also living here, between the Mavs, Cowboys, Stars, Rangers, and even the arena league Desperados... FC Dallas soccor is ranked in populatiry somewhere down between High School Football and JV volleyball.

Ah, yes... there's nothing better than beer, soccer (or football for you English guys out there) and my roomie gone. (You can't imagine how annoying her comments about the colours of shirts and looks of players can be during a game.)

Even though, Finn, I have to say that England disappointed me this afternoon. I thought they'd have less problems with a team like Paraguay. Especially considering that Paraguay was not playing very well. We'll see how the'll do when Rooney's back. (Btw I think I'd let Crouch play along with Rooney. Owen was a big disappointment.)

Best game so far was Argentina Vs. Côte d'Ivoire 2:1 (Argentina didn't deserve to win, though.)

Heh, yeah. England won the game wihout even scoring a goal! I don't know about the Argentina match being the best so far though. The best game of the tournament by far was the Trinidad & Tobago/Sweden match which ended in the 0-0 draw. OMG, Trinidad's defence was just astonishing. As was the goalkeeper. Damn, that was a good game. Unless of course you're Swedish, lol.

Man, just got back from my bartending shift. I may love the game but I hate the fans. So damn annoying to serve someone when he slurs his speech asking for drinks for a dozen people which he can't afford, who then gets angry with ME because I can't understand what he's saying and because I won't accept 1 pound as a fee for 12 pints, 8 shots and a malibu and coke...

Oh and he kept calling me a "dirty yank" for some obscure reason.

In short: God I wish I had been in your shoes instead Finn!

Exactly! It's one of the things I like best about soccer: I'm a keeper; I don't like scoring goals. :)

Brazil all the way!!!

Sweden played well and Trinidad's defence was great but what I liked about Argentina/Côte D'Ivoire was that it was a fast game with both teams having chances to win.

I think we would learn to never eat at a place who's national team is playing for that very reason. Of course, that's if they have a national team competing in the first place.

I shall go with the legendary Nation of Other. I am not certain what it's flag looks like...

Honestly, with so many teams I thought none of the above was a distinct posiblity.

I think this is their flag and national motto. Official currency is the IOU and animal is the Ring Tailed Snipe.

I'm cheering for Germany, England and the Netherlands :) However I think it'll be Germany or Brazil to win the cup.

Since the USA is out already, I'm still rooting for either England or Argentina to win it all. You just watch out, Argentina might just surprise some people.

I know it's silly to go against Brazil... but I loathe Brazil's team... yea, I'm a bad person.

I don't think it'd be so much of a surprise if Argentina won. So far they've been playing a few very good games. As for Brazil, if they have another game like the first two they won't win.

At least America gets what it desearves on the soccer field :P

Im not going to say Im a giant soccer fan. Last full game I watched ended up in softcore pornography.

Still, it is fun to watch the riots.

I'm hoping for Ghana to upset Brazil :P Ghana is shockingly in the round of 16 and could pull off an upset.

Germany beat Sweden today, and Argentina beat Mexico today in extra time. So it'll be Germany vs. Argentina sometime on Friday.
