YO! Squids and Sharks roll call!

Hi all you Squid "Starfleeters" and Shark "Marines" out there; I want to recommend the latest Enterprise book to you all (and even if you dont role play as one of these departments) - "Last Full Measure" by Mangels and Martin.

Good, solid and fast read. The MACOs finally get a moment to shine in this book. And trust me, there is also plenty of Fleeter coverage as well, but its nice to see the MACO's get the time as well.

Without giving anything away, as a security roleplayer, I was liking the focus on tactics, some demolitions, the chain of command, recon work and the like. The characters were also handled well.

So, basically, if your a security rpger, a marine rpger, or one of those "other" departments  , this is a good solid Enterprise book for everyone.

Now with that said, I will now incite a riot - Starfleet Security is way better then Starfleet Marines.... :D

Enjoy all!

Four large marines? See? Even the Colonel thinks that a security person is too much for one Marine to handle.

(Will so probably regret that during next sim) :D

One for each limb. And yes, probably. But then, I have a long memory...

::had it bought and read the day after it was released:: Absolutely spectacular book. And of course, a bit of trivia -- the working title for Last Full Measure was indeed "Squids and Sharks".

I wonder what Roddenberry would have thought of Marine detachments?

Not much at all either way. My understand is that at that time everyone was of the idea that wars would be a push button affair with everyone dead in the first 15 minutes. We can see this in how Earth and the Romulans had such a bloody war without ever facing one another. No troops, all starship and I'd guess orbital bombardments.

While we've found out that you'll always need troops on the ground to win a war, fiction always seem to go one extream or another. Either it's all starship battles or it's Klingons with pointy things rampaging over troops armed with ranged energy weapons.

My thing is: historically and in real life, ships have always carried a marine contingent. From the glory days of the Royal Navy to current aircraft carriers, you have naval and the marine contingents.

As for what Gene Roddenberry would have thought, we'll never really know, honestly, because no marines were featured in his original show. Even if Mr. Roddenberry was "okay" with the idea of marines serving on a starship, that concept did not make it into the final blueprints of the finished series. And all of the successive Treks went in that pure-Naval direction, following the lead of TOS. Which, really doesn't bother me, just an observation. :P

I just like the MACO idea that ENT put forward, and I like the MACOs, period. Something different Trek wise, and yet in keeping with that real history. Again, "Last Full Measure" is a good read, and spotlights our Sharks and Squids well, IMO.

Let's hear it for the OPS and COMM officers.

I couldnt agree more Sarvek! but than again I am slightly partial. Besides with out us Ops and Comm Officers The Security and Marines would have to deal with the Captains wrath over the Comunicators. ::Shivers:: What a scary thought!

Yep! Lets not forget that OPS and COMM officers keep the communications going smoothly, the MED teams keep us all healthy, ENG keeps the ship going, HELM drives the dang thing, and we need SCI to explain the strange phenomena. But...on an away team or a shipboard incident its the Security or Marine personnel that are going to go all Redshirt and save ya by diving on that grenade or stepping in front of that rabid Fangor beast. Boo Yah!

::Gives her GM teams *the look*:: Not that I WANT to dive on a grenade or deal with that Fangor beast mind you. Don't be getting any ideas now. Dealing with flea infested kittens and having a date with the drug dealer from Hades is enough. :P

Oh sure, forget one of the most important positions on the ship- Tactical. I mean, sure, the helmsman can get you there, the science geeks do that voodoo that they do, the engineers keep the tea kettle ticking along nicely, the medicos do the same thing with the biological components of the ship, and ops and comms keep the communication lines untangled. And Security and the Gyrines keep the bad guys actually off the ship and break up the fights in 10-Fwd (usually caused by the Marines).

But who is it that defends the ship? Who is it that spends countless hours in combat simulation coming up with new ways to perplex and confound the Romulans, the Cardassians, the Dominion, the Pandarians, the Ferengi, and rogue Klingons?

I'll tell ya who-- the Tactical officer, that's who. And whether he's standing behind the Center Seat, or off in his little corner on the older ships like the Hood (which I guess a good assumption is that she's been refitted? Please correct me if I'm wrong, Huff). And Lord knows when the ship get's hit, who's the first one to get bitched at? The Tac officer. We get no respect. A lot like Rodney Dangerfield.

Maybe I might pick it up, as per security officers...

10 years ago roughly a young Ensign Adam Lyne was assigned the USS Exodus. He would later be renamed (after a promotion or two) to Andrew "The Hunter" Lyon. Man where did the years go, and the fleet I faught to protect...
