The News of the Future - Today!

Evening all!

Noticing some of the threads in this section have a 'science news' type section, I figured I'd set up a newsy debate thread with associated links to various topics which have appeared in the scientific, medical, engineering and security fields which may be of interest to simmers.

Anyhoo, I hope you'll find it interesting and please post any links to any latest developments you come across and discuss em!! :)

Here is my first one. It'll appeal mainly to our security sections. It's a device which links to a 'brain port' allowing soldiers to have 360 degree night vision and will allow them to 'taste' the battlefield. Apparently.

http://edition.cnn.com/2006/TECH/04/24/ton...t.ap/index.html - This link is no longer online. Thanks to Xantara for giving me the heads up! Sorry folks.

For our science community, this is SETI's new telescope which searches for extraterrestrial 'beams'.

And again for Engineering and science, they've only gone and invented a tractor beam. They mention trek too!

Oh come on now really, the Pentagon is swimming in money!

Except that money is going to Haliburton (thence to the VP), which is the single-source contractor in Iraq, and probably Afghanistan; and new, totally obsolete Cold War-era weapons systems like the F-22 Raptor.

Incidently, Haliburton charges the DoD US$100 per soldier per day for meals. And the war's been going for how long? Do the math, kids. Gagh would be better than what we got at the DFAC where I was. Heck, even an MRE or ancient C-Rations would have been better.

Those MRE crackers made good throwing stars. The peanut butter made good engine sealent. And that cheese was a good cure for diahhrea, but with an unfortunate side effect.

Ah, but the new jalapeno cheese spread negates the gum-up factor of the cheese. Clears the sinuses out really nicely, too.

And they finally got rid of that nasty, old sponge-textured and consistency, green omelet with ham. No one I ever knew ate that stuff.

okay where are the warp drive rumors? I know you have the links for them Finn! We've made antimatter already, I want to see rumors of the goverment already going past our solar system!

Oh and about the binary star thing we really wouldn't be able to know since if the orbit's right the second star might always be on the other of the sun then the Earth is. Or I guess I should Sol considering that instead of saying "Man the sun is bright today." we might be saying "Man the suns are bright today." Of course in order to see the second star (if it exists) Sol and the other star would have to be in a very strange orbit that only brings that star around every so ofter. Now if you'll excuse I'm off to check on myths of there being two stars at some point in time.

Ah, I only deal in news, not rumours.

(Although the fact that you know I have the links makes me think you are part of an illuminati consortium monitoring my keystrokes and observing my anti establishment activities whilst eating doughnuts from some white utilities van somewhere down my street)

Um...no. No warp drive rumours as yet, or indee, free energy, assassination conspiracies, UFO cover ups or lizard people posing as Royalty. Not on my shift!

I'm just going to have to grill you up... hehehe... some of Goftar's Famous Spicy Barbequed Shrimp on Saturday, I'm sure the Gorn Chef would oblige. Muhahaha!

You're quite welcome. Although I may have to pass on the grill. I think the Gorn chef has been slightly creative in the kitchens and as I recall, the health inspector went missing...
